[Discussion] Time to Revive The Canada Cup?

Well there it is, used to be a international competition but for this one season it could mean Canadian Hockey Supremacy.

 

This will probably be put into a Canadian Division thread but this is about an actual award already in existence.

What would be cool if they had a tournament every couple years that consisted of the top team in every division,  reigning Stanley Cup champ, Gragarian Cup champ and SHL champ. Kind of like a Spengler Cup tourny.

you  mean like a champions league

Better yet, rename the Stanley Cup the Canada Cup, and have only Canadian teams eligible to win it.

 

If it's two American teams in the final, no Canada Cup is awarded and instead the teams are provided with participation ribbons.

This is just a single season and only Canada so far

Obviously some reponsers have no Canadian teams they cheer for or interest in fan bragging rights

 

I can see this will be hijacked quickly.

NHL is all about money. No way they will let NHL players go into a tourney without massive compensation. 

Maybe if a separate league of all Canadian teams like the WHA, with the Canada Cup (or variant) as the trophy.

Problem is it would water the NHL down even more in talent.

It is this season only so far, all Canadian teams are in ONE division, I thought most fans already knew that.

 

So in essence they are already playing for the Canada Cup, or to make it simple, the North Division winner is given the Canada Cup

You also might have missed the part this is only for one season as the NHL has said.

No it would be simple, all the Canadian teams in one division playing that old unequal schedule that used to be played.

As far as money, the Canadian teams would still represent about 40% of the NHL bottom line. With 4 Canadian teams making the playoffs every year is worth 3 million a game to the NHL.

No tourney, the NHL already has divisional playoffs.

So... you want them to award the Canada Cup to the winner of this year's North Division?

 

I mean sure.... but what about the other divisions? Why just the North division?
