After some serious consideration the Redwings have decided not to offer Nathan Legare a qualifying offer.

We thank Nathan for his contributions to our organisation and wish him the best in his future endeavours.

10. ERIK PORTILLO, G (LAK) - 22

GML: UD

NHL: 2019 67th pick

NCAA: 38gs .908sv% 0so

Portillo has been the No. 1 goalie for Michigan for the last two seasons. He backstopped the Wolverines to a Big Ten championship and went all the way to the Men's Frozen Four where they bowed out in the semifinals. Portillo had a .926 save percentage in 42 games as a sophomore. This season, Portillo has seen his numbers dip while playing behind the nation's youngest team. He has a .906 save percentage in 31 appearances. Michigan has allowed an average of 33.5 shots against per game, eighth most in the country. So the defense has been a bit leakier in front of him in his junior campaign.

9. VILLE KOIVUNEN, LW (CAR) - 20

GML: 2021 46th pick

NHL: 2021 51st pick

Liiga: 52gp 12g 16a

AHL: 12gp 1g 0a

Koivunen’s a stocky and feisty winger who goes into the dirty areas. He’s a smart player who shows a very good understanding of how the play is unfolding and where he needs to be to influence it. He has poise and vision when the puck is on his stick. He has great balance on his feet and has surprising strength in front of the net when battling for position. He has good awareness for when to break out of the zone to make himself open for a pass. Koivunen tends to come to a complete stop to change direction instead of a long sweeping turn which gives him an edge in chasing down the play. He keeps his body square to the puck which makes him always open for a pass. From a defensive perspective, Koivunen doesn’t over pursue the puck which ensures he’s almost always in position relative to his assignments. He plays hard, trying to throw hits and rub players out along the boards, despite his smaller stature.

8. DMITRY BUCHELNIKOV, LW (DET) - 19

GML: 2022 125th pick

NHL: 2022 52nd pick

KHL: 10gp 1g 1a

VHL: 35gp 15g 13a

Buchelnikov is a 19-year-old Russian winger who was drafted by the Red Wings 52nd overall in the 2022 NHL Draft. This was his second go-around after he went undrafted back in 2021. He’s an offense-driven player who has a keen shooting ability and explosive speed. It’s his pure skill that makes him such a remarkable pickup and find by Detroit’s scouting staff. When he is in possession of the puck he works magic with his hands, somewhat reminiscent of Red Wings legend and fellow Russian.

7. DAVID EDSTROM, C (VGK) - 18

GML: 2023 41st pick

NHL: 2023 32nd pick

SHL: 11gp 2g 2a

Edstrom measures 6 feet 3 and 187 pounds and is a good all-around player who can move the puck well in transition. Rated a strong passer, Edstrom distributes the puck well on the breakout and in the offensive zone. Edstrom’s height will help him at winning his battles and getting to the dirty areas, two major things that coach Bruce Cassidy asks of his forwards.

6. MATVEI PETROV, RW (EDM) - 20

GML: 2022 35th pick

NHL: 2021 180th pick

OHL: 65gp 27g 66a

The Edmonton Oilers got one of the biggest steals in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft when they selected Russian forward Matvei Petrov from the Molodezhnaya Hokkejnaya Liga (MHL) in the sixth round at 180th overall after a 22-goal, 20-assist performance through 58 games in his draft year. He made the transition to North America and joined the North Bay Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the 2021-22 season, and has become a dominant offensive weapon that fans should be excited about.

5. XAVIER BOURGAULT, RW (EDM) - 20

GML: 2022 33rd pick

NHL: 2022 22nd pick

AHL: 62gp 13g 21a

The most impressive development with Bourgault’s game has come on the defensive side. He has never been a liability defensively, but his attention on and off the puck this season has improved a great deal. He’s noticeably more aware. Rarely do I find him below the play in the offensive zone when his team doesn’t have possession. He keeps the game in front of him very well, intercepting pucks high in the offensive zone in the process. He also positions himself to assist with back pressure through the neutral zone when opponents are on the attack. I appreciate his growth as a player in all three zones.

4. AMADEUS LOMBARDI, C (DET) - 20

GML: 2023 71st pick

NHL: 2022 113th pick

OHL: 67gp 45g 57a

The 113th-overall selection in last summer’s draft has torn up the OHL this year, producing 102 points in 67 OHL games. He fell to the fourth round after the OHL canceled the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic – teams just didn’t have a robust scouting report on the 5-foot-10 center. Kris Draper and the Red Wings did, though. Now, he’s one of their top prospects. Not only is Lombardi a great skater, he also processes the game at an advanced level. He’s a driver that is able to analyze the defense in short order and make smart plays quickly, whether that’s passing to an open teammate or holding onto the puck a bit longer.

3. CARL LINDBOM, G (VGK) - 20

GML: 2023 72nd pick

NHL: 2021 222nd pick

HockeyAllsvenskan: 36gp .930sv%

Lindbom, who had his birthday just days ago, has gone from draft blip to professional world-beater in Sweden’s second-tier league, the Allsvenskan. Along with posting two shutouts in seven appearances for Sweden at the 2023 Men’s World Juniors, Lindbom took home Rookie of the Year and Goalie of the Year honors with the Allsvenksan’s Djurgårdens IF. He posted a staggering .930 save percentage, seven shutouts, a 1.86 goals-against average, and a 25-11-0 record in 36 games, adding a .941 save percentage in five SHL qualification matches. Unfortunately, an injury in his fifth game knocked him out for the rest of the postseason, and Djurgården would lose to MoDo in the Allsvenskan championship series, keeping them in the second-tier league for 2023-24.

2. LUKAS DRAGICEVIC, D (SEA) - 18

GML: 2023 17th pick

NHL: 2023 57th pick

WHL: 68gp 15g 60a

Offense is the name of the game for Dragicevic. He was the lone WHL blue-liner to lead his team in scoring, and he did so by an impressive 11-point margin. Those results were enough for Dragicevic to be named a first-team All-Star in the WHL's U.S. Division. His 75 points were the most by a draft-eligible WHL defenseman since Ian White tallied 79 in 2001-02. Only four draft-eligible blue-liners have scored over a point per game in a full WHL season over the past decade: Bowen Byram, Ivan Provorov, Ty Smith, and Juuso Valimaki. Each was drafted inside the first 17 selections of their respective drafts. Dragicevic's scoring this year exceeded all of them.

1. LUKE HUGHES, D (NJD) - 19

GML: 2021 3rd pick

NHL: 2021 4th pick

NCAA: 39gp 10g 38a

Hughes is a high-level skater who penetrates the offensive zone with the intention of creating mismatches and outnumbering the opposing defenders. His position at the offensive blueline is merely a starting point in an offensive shift for him, as he will often walk down the half-wall or creep into the slot. If he has the puck on his stick, his lateral mobility is matched by his puckhandling ability and desire to take any ice given to him. Unafraid to shoot, Hughes has a good knack for finding dangerous scoring positions for himself. He is a silky passer as well, using the threat of his shot to draw in opponents before spotting a teammate in space.

^ I am impressed you managed to find time off to take a well deserved break, Mike V. Grats, you deserve more of this!

official business:

RELEASE: The Seattle Kraken would like to release Henrik Borgstrom, as he has signed in Sweden for the coming season.

Quote

Borgstrom, 25, was an occasional healthy scratch for the Hershey Bears during the 2022-23 season, but did have periods of admirable play. It was announced earlier this year that he will be returning to Sweden to play for HV71 for the 2023-24 season, however, the Capitals will maintain his NHL rights.

Signs in Sweden
May 26, 2023
Laaksonen signed a two-year contract with Lulea of the Swedish Hockey League on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Laaksonen was selected in the third round -- 89th overall -- in 2017 by the Sabres and was dealt to Dallas on Dec. 15 for Joseph Cecconi. Laaksonen had two assists in 10 AHL games with Rochester and followed that with a pair of goals and six helpers in 29 AHL games with Texas. The Finnish defenseman has never played a game in the NHL after playing parts of three seasons in the AHL.
