What's the word on Braeden Bowman? That was a nice move in the shootout there. I just see a right-shot with good size and solid OHL numbers. Is he worth pursuing? -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Akito Hirose
Sean Monahan replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I thought he was one of the names that were mostly cleared. From what I remember it was names like Formenton, McLeod, Tkachouk, and some others. If I remember correctly, Batherson came in to eat pizza and saw what was happening then he noped out of there. He could be involved though. If that’s the case I’d stay far away. -

They traded Sandin my guy. -
I'm not sure what you mean by your first paragraph. The Canucks ran with a rookie goalie, that's a tank move right there. Who do you suggest they bring up? PGD, Brisebois, Juulsen, Hirose, Studnicka, Dries, Wolanin, Kravtsov, McDonough, and McWard all played games down the stretch. In some cases, like Dries and PDG, they played higher up the lineup anybody could've expected them to. Moving from 8th to 9th would've changed nothing. The bolded sentences are very contradictory. "What if this proven commodity runs into an injury or doesn't fit well with us and he all of a sudden sucks, then I say we should've kept the draft pick and run with the 18 year old who will definitely help us".

What would have been your preferred course of action? Sit Petey, Miller, Hughes, Kuzmenko, Demko, or some combination of the 5? Slash their minutes and give them to depth players? The roster was never bad enough to truly tank. They had a horrible first half with porous defense and AHL goaltending. If you think they had any chance of finishing around or lower than Chicago, Anaheim, Columbus, Montreal, Philly, San Jose, or Arizona I'd say you're nuts.

[Official] Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball thread

The crazy thing is in his previous two starts he totaled 5.1 IP, 15 ER, 15 H, 5 HR, and 4 BB's to 5 K's. Baseball's a funny sport sometimes. -
I'm not going to freak out about it too much yet. I think it's a little presumptuous to say their best scenario is a waiver-wire or league minimum player. I'm sure there's others but off the top of my head I think of Bonino and Pavelski as two centers who were later round picks in their second years of eligibility. Looking at it, now, Pavelski's USHL numbers in the year he was drafted are good but not spectacular and he actually regressed statistically in his 20 year old season. I'm not saying our picks today will end up as good as either of those two, but I do think some of the reactions to those picks are a little reactionary and premature.

Why does his EP page look like he hasn't played in years? NVM, it's just formatted weird.

Yep.

Yeah I was talking about Brodin as more of a high-end comp. Maybe a best-case scenario, though best case would probably mean he develops his offensive game a bit.

What's the move for them? I could be completely off but it looks like they've got $3.4M in cap space + $5M for Lehner on LTIR. If Hill comes in around the reported ~$4.5M that leaves them around $4M to play with. Smith was at $5M for another two years. It's gonna be tough for them to find an adequate replacement within the confines of the salary cap. That's first world problems for a team who just won a cup though.

Can't say I know anything about the kid beyond highlight videos but it seems you've watched him shift-by-shift a fair bit so I'll take your word. Thanks for the good write up. Like you say, if his tools were as consistently high-end as we seem to wish they were he probably would've gone like 5 spots higher. I like the roll of the dice on his skill set. Is somebody like Jonas Brodin maybe a good example of what we could hope for? The nationality and draft status are just coincidence, but it sounds like the talent comps might be accurate? Average size, best assets are skating and IQ, defensively inclined, etc. We might be overstating the problem right now after seeing Calgary these last couple years but I don't hate the idea either. Scandinavian players have been relatively good to us. An EP2/Willander pairing sounds pretty good to me.

If you were to make a Venn diagram of the people who argue that Beach should've defended himself (and overlook the fact that the Blackhawks organization wrote letters of recommendation for Aldrich in pursuit of a job coaching minors in which he ended up sexually assaulting minors) and the people who say they're against Pride nights/jerseys/memorabilia "because of the kids", what do you think it would look like? Watching the draft tonight has me all kinds of pissed off. The Blackhawks organization swept the Beach/Aldrich situation under the rug, then wrote letters of recommendation for him to pursue a job in which he molested kids (despite knowing that he AT LEAST a potential sexual predator) , and for that they got the lightest slap on the wrist. They got a lesser punishment than the Devils and Canucks got for the Kovalchuk/Luongo contract or the Coyotes did for their draft workout issues. Seeing the way that situation played out, paired with the the juxtaposition of the LGBTQ theme nights vs the constant barrage of gambling ads, I think I might be out on the NHL.

I thought they were having a bit of fun with the gag that somebody royally screws up one of the European names every year. It's definitely possible that it wasn't scripted. We don't really know what's going on with Price. It seemed odd to me because Reinbacher is one of the easier Euro names to pronounce.
