I wonder if the Canuks plan to move him to the wing at all and if he can play the wing. I'm not sure how great his chances are of becoming a bottom-6 shutdown center but I could see him develop nicely into a defensive specialist bottom-6 agitating winger.

Putting him at wing would be such a waste of his faceoff talents though. Maybe he could just take the faceoff and move to wing. That's always an option.

The Vancouver Canucks signed centre Alex Friesen to a three-year entry-level contract on Wednesday.

The 21-year-old forward had 71 points (26 goals, 45 assists) and 106 penalty minutes in 62 games with the Ontario Hockey League's Niagara IceDogs this season.

The five-foot-10, 189-pound native of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., was drafted by Vancouver in the sixth round (No. 172 overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

I think there is like 5 of these threads now, in the future search before copying and pasting the announcement from the home page.

As for Friesen, I think we may have just burned a contract. He's an overager, he's on the small side, and to be honest I haven't really heard much about him since his draft. That's saying something since I follow prospects religiously.

Anyways all the best Friesen. If he doesn't make the Wolves he'll be released by this time next season.

A lot of these threads needs to be bumped in a few years from now. Too many people, who don't know anything are putting in opinions. Friesen will make the NHL.

Just because he's an overager obviously means he needs to put up 2 ppg, and be a superstar. :picard: Some people just plain don't get hockey. He was the best forward for Niagara during the playoffs and they went to the finals. Who cares, he didn't put up 2 ppg in the regular season. Bust! :sadno:

Evan Fuller and Dan Gendur say hi. Men that played with boys and ultimately went on to star on ECHL teams.

I'm routing for Friesen just like the next guy. Had it been the case that he was above 6' and put up point per game stats in his early OHL years then I would agree with you in saying Friesen will make the NHL. The reality is he is 5'10, and put up numbers while being 21 in a U-20 league. Burned contract.

all of a sudden a 21 year old is too old? 21 is still very young. I dont know much about him, but if wants to play in the NHL he will put forward the effort and ultimately make it. If you really want something, you will do all you can to get it.

If he works hard, I think best case scenario for Friesen is becoming a Mike Keane type player.

He'll never be a core center piece, but a necessary complementing piece for a championship team.

He's all heart-and-soul and skates really well and is smart with amazing work ethic. Cant' wait to see him in the AHL.

Just because he's 21 it doesn't make him 'OLD'. All you 13 year-olds who come onto this board and look at these players statistics or peoples age and have no other sort of input on young men like Friesen makes me sick. Don't classify him as being old just because he's a man playing against kids. Gillis knows more than all of you, so please, all of you, keep spectating as you wish...

Like Marchand, Alex Friesen's small, but feisty. He plays that role game where he kills penalties and shadows other teams stars. He'll be given an opportunity to play with the Wolves. Don't look at stats and immediately judge him. For god sakes, Nathan Gerbe is 5'5 and he's been a regular on the Buffalo Sabres for the last two years.

Rey ,What do you consider a bust? He was a 6th round pick. Not really a bust now is he! What he does in Major Jr and what he does in the pros maybe different. They're alot of players who's stats aren't that great still made an impact in the NHL.

Matt Cooke, Patrick Roy and to name a few. Just don't look at the stats Rey.

I think Rey was being sarcastic and referring to those who said Friesen is a bust...

Considering he's an over-ager playing his 5th season in the juniors against boys in a stacked team, his numbers are not that impressive. IF he makes NHL, he would be one of the smallest guys. Not much upside here.

Jeeze, well I guess just because he was an overager, winning Best Defensive Forward, Best On Faceoffs, and 3rd in Hardest Worker in the Eastern Conference over all the other "Typical Overagers" as well as "Future Stars", or is he the only overager in the OHL? He may be an overager but this doesn't diminish his accomplishments.
