Vancouver Canucks winger Byron Bitz has been suspended two games by the NHL for his hit on L.A. Kings forward Kyle Clifford in the opener of the Canucks' Western Conference quarter-final series Wednesday night.

Bitz had a disciplinary hearing with the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety on Thursday afternoon.

Bitz received a boarding major and game misconduct at 12:12 of the second period of the contest as a result of the hit.

While attempting to gain puck control, Clifford had his head down and was in a vulnerable position when Bitz caught him and forced his head into the glass.

Clifford stayed on the bench for a while before leaving the game and not returning. The LA Times is reporting that Clifford will also miss Game 2 of the series on Friday night.

It's a fair suspension. We all suspected it'd be a couple of games. However, I still can not comprehend what Shanny was thinking with regards to Weber.. :picard:

I think one playoff game is usually equal to two regular season games? Or is that for the Stanley Cup Finals?

But if that is the case...

Byron Bitz on Kyle Clifford - 4 games
Duncan Keith on Daniel Sedin - 5 games

I was thinking 1 game compared to Shea Weber getting 2,500$ for punching Zetterberg then smashing his face into the glass with 100% intent. Brutal.

In an interview with ESPN, the league’s lord of discipline said he sees each playoff series as a “seven-game season” and, therefore, being suspended for one playoff game is worth considerably more than a regular-season game.

http://www.torontosu...s-playoffs-plan

By 'considerably more, I'm guessing, by Shanahans standards, 1 playoff game = 3 reg season games (at minimum)

Keith suspended 5 regular season games for cheapshot on Daniel.
Weber (repeat offender) gets $2,500 fine for smashing Z's head into glass.
Bitz suspended for equivalent of at least 6 reg season games for hit on Clifford.

Cool stuff NHL. Love the consistency, you're a model organization. Keep up the good work, I hope karma bites you in the arse.

EDIT: Video description for suspension. 3 issues, boarding, no history, and player was injured: http://video.nhl.com...id=60&id=171899

So Weber does something absolutely stupid. He loses some pocket change. But of course a Canuck player gets suspended. I'm not against the suspension, but this is a joke.

Some of you complain about people talking about "conspiracies," but the NHL sure gives them a reason to think so.

Pathetic

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

Good call on Bitz. On George the Animal Weber and throwing Zetterberg's head into the turnbuckle, not so much! Oh how I thought it might be different with Shanahan.

I thought they might send out a "What's Not Charging? " video today and show the Kassian and Lapierre penalties. Guess not?

Plain and simple corruption. 2 playoff games equal rougly 6 to 9 reg. season games. But don't worry guys, Keith only got 5 reg. season for purely intentional elbow the to face on Daniel, who did not have the puck and the play was broken because the puck was lost and Sedin was trying to look where it was, in a non-threatening and vulnerable positon . I'm appalled at the double standard. 2,500 for Weber intentially SLAMMING Zetter's head in the board? What a joke.

I can say that im not surprised that Bitz was suspended, the hit looked a little more
dangerous than it actually was.

Bye bye Bitz... I just wish it was longer because I'm hoping taking these 'tough' guys out will give the team no option but to play with skill, and not focus on dives and taking the opponent's players off.

Good trade off though. Bitz isn't a regular, but according to Kings fans Clifford is one of their main tough guys - gets into fights, stands up for his team mates, chips in offensively once in a while, etc. According to NHL.com he doesn't play tomorrow either, so I'll take him out of the series if it means Bitz is gone for two games.

(Of course, no player needs to go through injury... I'm hoping Clifford gets better, just not in time to make an impact in our series).

Also... Weber on Zetterberg...

That definitely deserved a suspension. I think every NHL fan right now except Predator fans see that. A fine isn't enough. If Zetterberg can't finish the series or playoffs, this'll be a huge mistake.

He deserves it. I hope AV finds somebody else to take over that 4th line role even after Bitz's suspension is over. The non-call on Weber is ridiculous though.

According to reports, Zetterberg is fine and will play game 2. Detroit was contacted by Shanahan.

from the NHL article:

"This was a reckless and reactionary play on which Weber threw a glancing punch and then shoved Zetterberg's head into the glass," said NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety and Hockey Operations Brendan Shanahan. "As is customary whenever Supplemental Discipline is being considered, we contacted Detroit following the game and were informed that Zetterberg did not suffer an apparent injury and should be in the lineup for Game 2.

It was the intent of that play that should have gotten Weber suspended. Injury or not. It was after the game was actually over and there was zero hockey play involved in his actions.

The suspension system is broken...from the top down...'Webber' gets a fine for taking a guys head and slamming it into the glass twice...disgusting. However he plays on an American based team so why would he get a suspension...'CBS CARES'...'CBC DOES NOT'

2 seems fair but it should have been 3.

Shea Weber should have gotten 4 for his antics.

Double standard , injury shouldn't matter , its the intent that matters.

Typical bush league actions , Both Byron Bitz and Shea Weber both deserved suspension but the NHL again has shown there complete lack of consistency with discipline or double standard

Oh here comes the Weber whambulence. Yes, the lack of suspension for him is rather shocking to say the least. But that doesn't mean Bitz didn't deserve his suspension, because he did 100%.

I am glad that at least someone got punished for their idiotic play. Sure, Weber should've gotten the same suspension, but I rather have Shan get at least one suspension right instead of letting everyone off the hook. It just so happens that Bitz got it this time. And because he is on our team we are here getting angry about it.

So people think since Weber got nothing, Bitz should get nothing? That kind of thinking is no good either.

I'm not sure if anyone is saying that, I could be wrong. It seems more like everyone knows Bitz deserved the suspension - it's just surprising Weber was let off the hook.

Weber - $2500 fine

Keith - 5 regular season games and a 2 min penalty

Bitz - 2 playoff games and a 5 min penalty and game misconduct

Rome - 4 stanley cup playoff games and a 5 min penalty and game misconduct

I agree with Bitz getting suspended but how is it that he gets 2 playoff games, when his hit was a hockey play (a dirty play but a hockey play none the less) and Keith and Weber deliberately tried to injure someone. Incomprehensible.
