Neversummer
2008 - Cody Hodgson 2009 - Jordan Schroeder 2010 - corrected ... no pick in 1st round 2011 - Niklas Jensen Based on MG's tenure and track record, I'd say tomorrow will be a blip in the bigger picture of things. UFCanuck
Rankings don't mean anything after the top 5. If you re-draft this crop next year there will be 2nd/3rd rounders taken in round 1, and vice versa. 80% luck.
RO8!!
I have serious doubts the player we pick as the BPA is actually the BPA.
Drive-By Body Pierce
Stephan Matteau, if he is still available, he could fill the need for more depth at center while comfortably fitting in the 3rd line role during his development, a trend the Canucks have shown in recent history. 23. Stefan Matteau Profile: 2011-12 Team: USNTDP League: USHL Position: Centre Height: 6'1 2011-12 Stats: 18 GP, 6 G, 10 PTS Weight: 210 lbs. Scouting Rankings: NHL Central Scouting: 17 NAS, International Scouting Services:No. 31, The Hockey News: No. 30, Button's Ranking: No. 48 TSN Scout Craig Button: Stefan is capable of wreaking havoc in the game with his combination of skating, skill and size. He has excellent speed and can close on opponents quickly and when you combine this with a desire and willingness to make physical contact, it can be very uncomfortable for opponents. The speed and quickness also allows him to make an impact offensively because he can beat defenders 1-1 and overwhelm them with his size. He can score in multiple ways; with a very good shot or by powering past defenders and taking it to the net. He is a unique player in the sense that he can quickly disrupt an opponent with his approach. While there have been concerns about his 'discipline' on the ice, it can be such an unsettling thing for an opponent that he just needs to find the proper balance with his aggression so that it's of the productive nature not the undisciplined. He is also able to play either wing or center so he becomes a player that can play multiple positions and that versatility is a another positive. light_kun
In 2010 Mike Gillis traded the 26th pick (Quinton Howden), Michael Grabner, and Steve Bernier for Keith Ballard and Victor Oreskovich. Boy it would be nice to have Howden in our prospect pool.
Tortorella's Rant
Given the Canucks track record in drafting, the BPA to them clearly is not the BPA.

whysoserious
I for one would like it if we traded our first for a early second and a later second round pick.

diesel_3
Hmm, seems like it's not that easy to get a guaranteed star at the draft, even with a good pick. I sometimes wonder if people think Gillis should be more amazing than anyone else just because we have him, perhaps using jedi mind tricks to get better players than we'd otherwise be able to. There's 29 other teams trying to do the same thing, and sometimes you get lucky or have that extra bit of scouting information or intuition that leads to selecting one player over another. He is of course. UFA is incorrect in the article. Do you plan on getting anything else besides a 2nd when you give up that 1st?
