2011 NHL Entry Draft - Final Rankings & Scouting Reports

1. [1,1] Chimon Seta, LW/RW (Kamloops Blazers, WHL)

63 GP | 57-43-100

The consensus number one pick from day one is a big scoring winger with great wheels. Incredible stickhandling and very high hockey IQ. Very one-dimensional but good at what he does. Doesn't use his size enough to be a dominant power forward.

Scout #1: First line winger, better version of Thomas Vanek.

Scout #2: First line winger, like Thomas Vanek.

2. [4,3] Justin Seguin, RW/LW (Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL)

65 GP | 43-53-96

Speedy scoring winger with great hands. Smart, hard-working player with a good frame. Average defensively. Needs to continue to bulk up and could use his body more effectively.

Scout #1: First line winger, better version of Radim Vrbata.

Scout #2: Top-6 winger, like Radim Vrbata.

3. [2,4] Michel Kay, G (Kelowna Rockets, WHL)

63 GP | 26-30-5-2.98GAA-.901Sv%

Agile goaltender with fantastic hand speed and reflexes. Carried an abysmal Kelowna team as a 17 year old. Fantastic at reading plays and recovering when out of position. With that said, positioning needs some work to prevent that from happening as much as it does.

Scouts #1 & 2: Starting goaltender, like Miikka Kiprusoff.

4. [3,2] Devrin Smith, C/RW (Shawinigan Cataracts, QMJHL)

37 GP | 11-22-33

Speedy, hard-working centerman with well-rounded offensive ability. Very strong on his skates. Adequate defensively. Needs to make a permanent switch to the wing or work hard on improving his faceoff ability to maximize effectiveness.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top-6 center, like Peter Holland.

5. [6,6] Ivan Anisimov, C/RW (Avangard Omsk, KHL)

42 GP | 3-4-7

Speedy playmaking center with incredible hands. High hockey IQ and work ethic combined with good defensive play and faceoff ability make for a very good prospect. Development may have been stunted by playing low minutes against tough competition.

Scouts #1 & 2: First line center, better version of Ryan O'Reilly.

6. [5,5] Qazy Kuznetsov, RW/C (Medicine Hat Tigers, WHL)

72 GP | 45-47-92

Big, physical winger with well-rounded ability. Finds ways to put points on the board without any stand out tools. Skating and hockey IQ are slightly above average. May not have much more room for development and should not be used as a center at the next level.

Scouts #1 & 2: Third line forward, more talented version of Eric Godard.

7. [29,7] Lawrence Schmidt, G (Kitchener Rangers, OHL)

44 GP | 29-14-0-2.27GAA-.916Sv%

Sound technical goaltender with a solid frame and good skating ability. Great at reading plays and challenging shooters. Puckhandling is average.

Scouts #1 & 2: Starting goaltender, like Craig Anderson.

8. [8,8] Joey Silverson, C/LW (Kingston Frontenacs, OHL)

68 GP | 39-43-82

Big, strong scoring centerman with incredible top speed. Very creative with the puck and possesses above-average playmaking ability. Good hockey IQ and average defensive play. Needs to improve faceoffs or switch to the wing.

Scouts #1 & 2: First line center, like John Tavares.

9. [7,9] Darcy Virtanen, G (Guelph Storm, OHL)

53 GP | 33-15-2-2.29GAA-.918Sv%

Agile goaltender with phenomenal reflexes and hand speed. Solid positioning and rebound control. Poor skater and very weak on his skates. Often gets confused and reads opposing players very poorly.

Scouts #1 & 2: Backup goaltender, like Al Montoya.

10. [12,10] Claude Morrison, LW (Edmonton Oil Kings, WHL)

68 GP | 17-33-50

Big, physical power forward who loves getting under opponent's skin. Incredibly hard worker who brings his "A" game every night. Good defensively and a decent skater, though top speed could be better. Offensive upside is somewhat questionable.

Scout #1: Third line winger, poor man's Milan Lucic.

Scout #2: First line winger, better version of Milan Lucic.

11. [17,25] Jagger Weller, C/RW (Windsor Spitfires, OHL)

64 GP | 29-28-57

Big checking centerman with fantastic speed. Decent well-rounded offensive ability and likes to throw his weight around. Hockey IQ and faceoff ability are just average and need improvement if this player is going to hang around at the next level.

Scouts #1 & 2: First line center, better version of Maxime Macenauer.

12. [39,12] Mario Day, LW/RW/C (Wakefield, HS-MA)

60 GP | 44-48-92

Big, strong, hard-working winger with great defensive ability. Possesses a very heavy shot and passes at a good to great level. Skating and hockey IQ are average. Hard to get a read on how talented this player is due to the very low quality of competition he faced.

Scouts #1 & 2: First line winger, better version of James Neal.

13. [16,11] Jarrod Skinner, RD (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, QMJHL)

57 GP | 7-30-37

Good two-way puckmoving defenseman who skates well. Good hockey IQ and strong on his skates. Possesses well-rounded ability but no stand out skills to push him over the top.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top pairing defenseman, better version of Andrew Ference.

14. [14,13] Vincent Bergeron, LW (Drummondville Voltigeurs, QMJHL)

69 GP | 29-51-80

Undersized playmaking winger with very good skating and hockey IQ. Surprisingly strong on his skates. Has fantastic hands and a great shot. Will be a captain at the next level. Average defensively.

Scout #1: First line winger, like Zach Parise.

Scout #2: First line winger, better version of Zach Parise.

15. [10,20] Kenny Boyd, C (Mississauga St. Michael's Majors, OHL)

63 GP | 17-55-72

Undersized playmaking centerman with great wheels. Has incredible hands and a knack for getting open. Surprisingly physical. Hockey IQ and defensive play are average. Needs to bulk up a lot to be successful in the NHL.

Scout #1: Third line center, like Brad Richardson.

Scout #2: Top-6 center, like Brandon Dubinsky.

16. [36,14] Connor Samuelsson, LW/RW (Exeter Seawolves, IJHL)

60 GP | 69-71-140

Hard-working defensive power forward who absolutely tore apart a league that he was far too developed for. Above average skater and average hockey IQ. Will be a captain at the next level. Passing is good but overall offensive upside is questionable.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top-6 forward, better version of Carl Klingberg.

17. [37,15] Corey Shore, LW (North St. Paul, HS-MN)

60 GP | 58-68-126

Another hard-working defensive power forward, though not quite as developed as Samuelsson. Consistently ranked right behind Connor due to their games being nearly identical. Despite the numbers, Shore is a little more of an offensive player.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top-6 forward, better version of Ryan Jones.

18. [13,18] Erick Reid, C (Vancouver Giants, WHL)

68 GP | 28-61-89

Well-rounded offensive center with fantastic skating ability. Prefers to be a playmaker but has a deceptively solid shot in his arsenal. Hockey IQ and defensive game are average. Needs to become stronger on his skates.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top-6 center, like Derick Brassard.

19. [9,17] Manny Murray, RW/LW (Prince George Cougars, WHL)

71 GP | 25-28-53

Big, talented offensive forward who had a disappointing season after winning WHL playoff MVP a year ago. Equally adept at playmaking and scoring and does both at a high level. Scouts have began questioning his work ethic and hockey IQ. Skating and defensive play are average.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top-6 forward, like Dustin Penner.

20. [40,19] Mac Leach, RD (Loyota Gold, HS-IL)

59 GP | 25-72-97

Smart, hard-working two-way puckmoving defenseman with a hard point shot. Above-average hockey IQ and strength. Skating needs improvement if he wants to be a puck mover at the next level.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top pairing defenseman, better version of Jake Gardiner.

21. [15,16] Terry Bruni, C/LW (Victoria Royals, WHL)

72 GP | 9-16-25

Talented checking center who was expected to have a breakout season but failed to deliver. Most scouts remain optimistic on his potential, but he needs to start putting his tools together soon. Offensive ability is there but the numbers simply aren't.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top-6 center, like Luke Adam with more defensive awareness.

22. Drake Holmes, C/LW (Swift Current Broncos, WHL)

63 GP | 33-56-89

Slick playmaking winger with incredible hands and a solid shot. Skating and hockey IQ are very good and could reach elite level. Defensive game is slightly below average. Attitude problems and poor work ethic could prevent him from becoming a star.

Scout #1: Top-6 center, like Mike Ribeiro.

Scout #2: Third line center, poor man's Mike Ribeiro.

23. [31,27] Richard Blouin, RD/LD (Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL)

65 GP | 16-31-47

Physical defensive defenseman with a booming point shot. Unlikely that this player will be a puck mover at the next level. Skating and hockey IQ are below average.

Scout #1: Top-4 defenseman, like Ian Cole.

Scout #2: Top pairing defenseman, better version of Eric Brewer.

24. [32,22] Trevor Good, C/RW (Minuteman Junior Flames, IJHL)

60 GP | 72-77-149

Smart, well-rounded centerman and strong on his skates. Needs to improve faceoff ability or switch to the wing. Below average skater. Questionable upside.

Scouts #1 & 2: Third line center, poor man's Colin Wilson.

25. [27,26] Vic Zanier, RW/LW/C (Regina Pats, WHL)

71 GP | 34-39-73

Agile scoring winger with fantastic hands. Very smart and almost always in the right position. Great shot and decent passing ability. Skating is average at best.

Scout #1: Top-6 winger, like Teddy Purcell.

Scout #2: Third line winger, poor man's Teddy Purcell.

26. [11,21] Cass Lemmon, LW/C (Acadie-Bathurst Titan, QMJHL)

70 GP | 8-36-44

Defensive playmaking winger who was expected to have a breakout season and failed to deliver early in the season. Picked up his game tremendously after a trade to Acadie-Bathurst. Skating and hockey IQ are just average.

Scouts #1 & 2: Third line forward, better version of Rostislav Olesz.

27. [20,29] Kevyan MacMillan, RD/LD (Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL)

68 GP | 18-31-49

Physical defensive defenseman who finds ways to put up very impressive point totals, likely due to playing with very talented forwards. Decent skater with average hockey IQ. Hard to say whether his offensive numbers will hold up at the next level, though it seems doubtful.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top-4 defenseman, like Ryan McDonagh.

28. [95,37] Rene Favreau, C (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, QMJHL)

66 GP | 32-56-88

Flashy offensive centerman with a good head for the game. Very good skater with a solid shot and great playmaking ability. Hockey IQ and defensive game are average. Late bloomer who could very well sneak into the top-15.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top-6 center, like Mikhail Grabovski.

29. [22,23] Nicklas Petersen, C/LW (Rodovre SoIK Jrs, Den Jr)

39 GP | 30-23-53

Smart offensive centerman with a knack for getting into good scoring areas. Average skating ability. Should move to the wing to maximize effectiveness. Defensive game is nearly non-existent and he hasn't developed as much as scouts hoped he would by now.

Scout #1: First line center, more talented version of Anze Kopitar.

Scout #2: First line center, like Mike Ribeiro.

30. Jiri Harpov, LD/RD (Kladno, Cze)

50 GP | 0-3-3

Well-rounded defenseman with good positioning and stickhandling. Incredible strength for an average sized player. Average skater with below average hockey IQ. Doesn't appear to possess much upside.

Scouts #1 & 2: Top-6 defenseman, poor man's John Carlson.

31. [25,24] Kyle Long, LW/RW (Michigan Wolverines, CCHA)

50 GP | 23-15-38

Gigantic scoring winger with incredibly high hockey IQ. Underrated playmaking ability and an impressive stickhandler. Skating and work ethic are above average. Defensive game is non-existent and he's far too weak on his skates despite his incredible frame.

Scout #1: First line winger, more talented version of James van Riemsdyk.

Scout #2: Third line winger, poor man's James van Riemsdyk.

137. [104,108] Matt Twochains, RW/LW (Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL)

63 GP | 24-23-47

Big scoring forward with a deadly wristshot and good hands. Underrated passer with decent checking ability. Poor skating and hockey IQ. May lack the consistency to be a regular NHLer.

Scout #1: Third line winger, poor man's Johan Franzen.

Scout #2: Bottom-6 winger, like Nick Palmieri.

158. [118,134] Usama Bin Laden, LW/RW (Bowling Green Falcons, CCHA)

48 GP | 27-20-47

Massive scoring forward with a heavy and deadly accurate shot. Very good passer with good hands. Smart and hard-working. Very poor skater who gets knocked down way too easily for his size. Not physical at all and defensive game is lacking.

Scouts #1 & 2: Third line winger, poor man's Dany Heatley.
