Evander Kane is on his way to the KHL.
The Winnipeg Jets forward has signed an agreement with Dinamo Minsk during the NHL lockout and will depart for Belarus on Saturday, according to agent Craig Oster of Newport Sports.
Kane, a 21-year-old from Vancouver, is the first locked-out NHLer from Canada to sign an agreement with the Russian-based league. He follows a number of notable players to the KHL, including Evgeni Malkin, Alex Ovechkin, Pavel Dastyuk and Pekka Rinne, who will be a teammate in Minsk.
Dinamo Minsk's athletic director, Igor Matushkin, referred to Kane as a "star" in a release announcing the signing.
Kane is coming off his best NHL season with 30 goals and 57 points in 74 games for the Jets. He signed a US$31.5-million, six-year extension just before the lockout came into effect on Sept. 15 -- making him Winnipeg's highest-paid player.
"I'm grateful that the Winnipeg Jets took that leap of faith and make that kind of commitment," he said afterwards.
Kane jumped into the NHL as a teenager after being drafted fourth overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in 2009. In 213 career games, he's racked up 63 goals and 126 points.
Kane has also represented Canada at the last three IIHF World Hockey Championships, where his speed proved to be an asset on the larger international ice surface. Dinamo Minsk hopes he'll be ready to jump into their lineup for Tuesday's game against Lokomotiv Yaroslavl.
The majority of locked-out Canadian NHLers have signed with Swiss teams so far. Earlier Friday, New York Islanders star John Tavares inked a deal with Bern while Brooks Laich of the Washington Capitals joined Kloten.

Best of luck to him!

Pretty sure he is referring to the last time a dark skinned player played in the Russian league. It was Anson Carter, after he scored a goal at the visiting teams rink, many fans threw bananas all over the ice.

Sad, but racism is alive and well...

Yep, that and http://thegrio.com/2...-soccer-player/ and http://www.dailymail...rto-Carlos.html and who knows how many more similar incidents that don't make international news.

Racism will exist as long as there's different races, don't matter what century we're in.

Don't understand why Evander Kane, Jeff Skinner, and Tyler Seguin do not want to report to the AHL. I guess there's the money...

Plus the fact that (without the NHL) it's the best league in the world at the moment.

EDIT: Crap... I just failed my own challenge.

If some one threw a banana in the ice after I scored. I would just pick it up and eat it. If it was multiple bananas I'd donate pull a pr stunt and donate them poor white kids to stir the pot a bit more.

That aside. Anyone else here actually enjoy watching how nhl caliber players are stacking up in the khl? it's pretty cool to see players all on different teams. Waiting to see if Crosbywill join Malkin and Gonchar.

NHLers should have formed their own super team and taken on the European teams.

Evander Kane - only 11 min ice time. Dynamo Minsk coach said he is in bad shape and not ready yet to play on KHL level. #jets

This just in, bananas everywhere in the lower Minsk area are sold out! A good day for grocery store owners, a terrible day for racism.

"What players need is the right kind of strength and power. That includes learning to understand that leverage and positioning can be just as important as raw strength when it comes to winning battles in the game. It's more about timing and athleticism --and avoiding injury--than it is about how much you can bench press. I don't know how many times I've seen a guy with the physique of a defensive end line up a guy half his size, only to bounce off when he connects. Sure, there is room in the game for big guys who can throw their weight around. But for the most part, players are smart enough to see them coming--and strong enough to protect the puck when they arrive. There are trainers out there who know how to devlop hockey-specific strength--though a trainer can help only if a player follows the program. All too often, I've seen players sign up with the best trainer, but not show up for their workouts and never to reap the benefits."

Yeah, Yakupov's coach said the same thing about him. It's the KHL's machismo attitude, nothing more.

Remember this?
