If true, this seems like a really odd time to fire a GM.

EDIT: Apparently it is true. This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Why fire him now? The season is just about to start.

Congratulations Toronto. You always seem to come up with new ways to baffle the hockey world.

An older article: http://slam.canoe.ca...5/19841851.html

Many within the Maple Leafs hockey hierarchy have been asked about Burke's status over the past few months and they claim to know nothing of it. There was a story going around that Burke had already taken a leave of absence. He didn't. There was a story going around that he was about to be fired. It hasn't happened -- and isn't about to happen.

In an unrelated matter, there has been speculation in the past that Burke would assume the presidency role of the Leafs in time and appoint his chief lieutenant Dave Nonis as general manager. But that's not what the swirling rumours have been about.

Keep in mind the Toronto Maple Leafs have new owners now...Bell Media and Rogers Media.

It is, but if Dave Nonis is going to replace him as general manager it shouldn't be a problem.

Wow, not the best time to do it. If they were to fire him, they should have did it when the season ended last year.

NONUTZZZZZZZZZZZZ is probably taking over.

Just saying.

curious. Wonder if this puts a damper on TO making a run on Getzlaf/Perry next summer. From what I heard they loved Burke.

The timing is so odd. This *has* to have something to do with Luongo deal. Why timing just before CBA is signed?

Dan Murphy@sportsnetmurph
Maybe Burke wanted Luongo and MLSE didn't. Or maybe Burke didn't want Luongo and MLSE does. Or maybe it has nothing to do with Lu! #analysis

Nonis doesn't exactly have a sparkling relationship with MG, what with MG meeting with the Aquilinis for the GM job while Nonis was still under contract. This *could* make trading Lu to TO difficult, but hopefully the two sides will put hockey over their egos.

Wasn't there some sort of issue a couple months ago of a "private nature" with Burke? Like sleeping with an employee or something.

If he is fired for a non-hockey reason, then Nonis takes over for sure at least on in interim basis.
