@TSNBobMcKenzie
Today's waivers: E Oberg (TB). G Desbiens, P Mullen (VAN). S Legein, D Meckler, M-A Cliche, T Hickey (LAK). J Pearce, F Pare (DET).
F Wathier, M Fortunas, L Gazdic, T Morin, T Petersen, T Sloan (DAL). S Backman, N McIver, M Watkins, T Wishart (NYI).
[MY EDIT:] More waivers: M Ford, D Syvret (PHI). B Lerg, S Sullivan, B Thomas (COL). P-L Letourneau-Leblond (ANA). T Eckford, H Jessiman, N Lawson (OTT
And WSH: R Potulny, Z Hamill, M Clackson, D Sabourin, P McNeill, G Stafford, K Marshall.

I'm surprised by a few names on there. Desbiens and Mullen will just be clearing to the Wolves, but Hickey and Wishart jumped out at me (Oberg as well).

From yesterday's waivers:

@TSNBobMcKenzie
NYI claim Joe Finley off waivers from BUF. No other players claimed from yesterday's waivers.

Would love to pick up hickey, hasn't had a chance in LA's system, plus chicago is short on offensive dmen after Connauton

Hickey surprises me.. You think LA would have tried to move him rather than risk waivers. Someone is bound to take him. Edmonton would be likely.

We wouldn't be able to pick up Hickey and send him to the wolves. If we pick him, he would have to stay with the Canucks for the season. Otherwise LA has first choice to take him off of waivers.

Opened this thread hoping to see Desbiens's name on the list. Hickey and Wishart get snagged?

I don't think the fringe players have much of a choice this season they're been watched closely during the lock out. There's not much room for these guys because there chance has passed this year.

Whoa. Hickey still hasn't played a single game in the NHL after being drafted 4th overall... can you believe that?

NOT suggesting the Canucks should pick him up, they should definitely not.

A little surprised by Wishart being sent down, thought they would wait until the very last second.. at least he's played some games this year, could've been the equivalent to the Canucks' Barker for the Islanders during training camp.

Ok, if Visnovsky doesn't play (as expected), why waive Wishart? I don't get it, they only have 6 D now?

Hickey has been a captain on pretty much every team he's been on. Had a devastating injury that set him back a year and a half in his development.

Honestly, I think he'd be a more dependable 8th d-man than Barker.

Last report was he's on the bus with his KHL team to go to their next road game. The bus may or may not be named after his favourite aunt, so that could be personal reasons...

I'm not convinced by Barker from past performance, but am willing to keep an open mind. Granted, Gillis couldn't have known who would get waived, but surprised he didn't keep him on a PTO and then see if someone better would come available. I guess he could consider a player good enough for him to want to claim wouldn't even get to us, and even if they did they could get claimed if we had to send them down later.

I don't think the contract to Barker precludes putting a claim in on another player. Barker would just as likely clear waivers if he was sent down anyway.

Unfortunately, after winning the Pres trophy again, I don't think the Canucks have much of a chance getting a guy like Hickey. He'll probably get claimed by a handful of teams. I'd be shocked if he passed through.

I was very surprised at Hickey at first glance. Makes more sense that he has to be on waviers to be sent down.

Didn't Hickey captain one of the World Junior teams? I'm amazed he still hasn't made the jump to the show yet.

Agreed on all counts, and we're often used to seeing a number of not so fantastic players when it comes to waiver wire reports.

I may be misinformed, but isn't there some advantage to waiving a player right now, versus say on Friday...I think the club can still keep the guy in camp, but the formal 'what league is he in' gets done now before other teams really get their needs prioritized...thus in the case of say Wishart, he can be recalled any time, but getting him down where he is likely to be playing early might save him from being claimed.

Again, i could be misunderstanding it..but my interpretation is that if you know or have a good idea that a guy will be on the farm, but you want to keep him on your depth chart, now is the time to get him down there...not sure if this applies, would Ty have had to be waived to get him back to the farm at this stage?

Wouldn't mind giving hickey or wishart a chance here. We're pretty stacked at the moment though, not really much room.

I got hammered with wishart in the summer and asked him if he'd ever want to put on the blue and green lol he said ya that would be dream one day because he grew up here.
