Y'know, I'd expect the guy who did 116 in a 60 zone to get psychological treatment, not the guy who played guitar during class.

Pretty much this.
Who knows if he was kidding or if he was being serious, but it's still a dumb thing to say.

Some people decide to become a teacher because they enjoy teacher. Other people 'decide' to become teachers when they feel there are not other options.

OMG we could've had McKeown!

I think Virtanen was a terrible pick given that he's out for 6 months which will hinder his development. You don't pick someone at #6 under that circumstance, along with the fact that he was given a 3/5 IQ (aka he's dumb).

God dammit Benning. WHY VIRTANEN? Terrible move.

Down by the River - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

He says what we're all thinking.

He says what ignorant racists among us would say.

My paternal grandparents fled eastern Europe to avoid being killed during the aftermath of the Russian Revolution. She raised 13 children and 70 years after her arrival upon her death could barely speak any English.

You make it seem like that is something to be proud of.

No excuse to not learn the language in that amount of time. You come to a country, learn the language. Plain and simple.

This is coming from someone with immigrant parents (I also wasn't born here, came at a very young age) who both worked very hard to become fluent in English.

Which is why I said "thinking". Most people have the common sense not to say such things out loud. Especially in the workplace and doubly so in Mr Long's chosen workplace.

Yeah, I agree - not learning the language at all is a bad reason to come to a country.

Doesn't mean you lose your original language but at least have the decency to know the language that is being used.

Lots of immigrant ppl don't know how to use basic services properly, i.e 911 services. But then again, lots of locals mis-use it too. It's not strictly an immigrant thing.

Raising 13 children did not give her a lot time. And for much of that time my family lived on a farm in rural Alberta. When our family relocated to Red Deer despite her language barriers she pioneered one of the first facilities for mentally disabled children ( my eldest uncle was born mentally challenged). When she died her funeral was attended by massive numbers of mourners who lauded her contributions to the community despite her language barrier.

Perhaps you should grab a clue before making such comments.

Nope. She spoke three languages fluently, none of them English.

Lol, you aren't helping yourself in this argument much.

If she was able to learn 3 other languages fluently, then English, a relatively simple language, should not have been a problem.

Anyone can make up excuses. My parent's came here with nothing and my dad had to support a family of 5 by himself while also learning English.

She grew up in an area of Europe where those three languages were used and learned them growing up.

For many years after arriving in Canada she lived on a farm in a rural area and the families living closest had also escaped to Cnada and travelled together at the same time. My grandfather had been a University professor and spoke passable English before he came but since he was not Anglo he had to become a farmer and later a bootmaker.

My father although born in Canada (four months after my grandparents landed in Canada) did not speak English until he began attending school.

English is actually a very complicated language. Not one of the easier ones to learn. Also, just because someone lives in an area for a long time doesn't mean that they will necessarily learn to speak the language. My 4 grandparents have lived in Canada for decades and only 1 of them speaks decent english. The other 3 speak very broken english when they speak it which isn't often.

It goes both ways too. I grew up being around my grandparents all the time and I don't know how to speak chinese. Just being around the language isn't enough to learn it. I do however understand some chinese, specifically a subdialect of cantonese, and my grandparents understand english well enough. We just can't speak the other language.
