Snake Doctor
Good job torts. AV was a pushover and didn't lay down the law with the media.
poetica
The kicker is the media should be the ones most upset about a phone ringing in a presser. Imagine you're standing next to the guy who's phone starts ringing while your trying to record the audio on yours. Now you don't get what you need for your job and the speaker was thrown off and possibly too annoyed to hang around and answer more question. Of course, they would have to remember that people talking to them isn't their right, but a privilege and therefore due a little respect first. pimpcurtly
I don't see us having a significant losing streak this year.
PhillipBlunt
I'll respectfully disagree.
elvis15
So only top notch sports journalists remember to set their phones to vibrate?
pimpcurtly
Cool. When you say significant, how many games are you talking about? And when during the season do you see it happening? I'm curious like a cat, that's why my friends call me Whiskers.
elvis15
1 or 2 game losing streaks are common enough I'd have trouble calling 3 in a row significant. 5-6 would be my criteria, but unless Torts is careful, he could find 3 significant enough for his liking. Jai604
Hahaha, Torts is great. I can't stand the so-called "media" in this town (bunch of hacks), so the more he rips into them the better.
BI3KSA-
Honestly the various media that reported on this made it seem so much more than it is. He didn't even raise his voice or anything. Definitely was just setting the tone like, Deb said. I agree with the entire "him being a big diversion from the players", being a good thing. PhillipBlunt
To make that a more factual statement though, only top notch sports journalists don't ask antagonizing questions and get emotional at otherwise reasonable responses in order to try and drive readership. We don't have many of those in Vancouver.
PhillipBlunt
3 or more games. I think it will happen a few times throughout the season. It ain't going to be a presidents trophy year and, although I think we will make the playoffs, it's going to be a struggle at times(especially scoring). ShakyWalton
I dont blame him at all, totally rude..the media thinks it can clomp into anywhere and do what they want. Turn your damn phone off you dumbass..good for Torts.

wshdrvvn
i think torts is going to have full leash when it comes to getting the media to operate the way he likes. he is the head coach after all, if they want quotes about hockey, they can do their job correctly for him. without him, there is no quote; act accordingly. the line i think gillis and torts are trying to draw is where torts talked about players specifically and didn't say very nice things. i think those are the things he regrets the most. set the precedent early so there is less of a chance for those non-hockey related quotes that have gained him this reputation. NuckleheadFan
Torts did the right thing to expect courtesy. Everyone (not just the players) knew that Torts was going to be honest, that's not going to change just cause he's speaking to the media. The media has got to look in the mirror if they want to see questionable professionalism.
PhillipBlunt
I guess I'm going by the old John Garrett saying "the good teams don't lose 3." (Obviously not an exact science )
FireGillis
Neither Torts or the Canucks can prevent the media circus. The sports writers in this town are licking their chops at the potential stories they can vomit out on a daily basis, and how those stories can get extra coverage by the ultra hyper eastern media. The perpetration of the circus is the fault of the media. Hopefully as the season gets going, fans desperate for hockey news can be sated by the games and ignore the sensationalism. smurf47
The media fails to use tact so he's just giving it to them in their terms. This is how it is - take it or leave it. I like it...he calls the shots and it's his team. It'll be a privilege more than a right to access the team and, with how things play out here, that's likely a good thing.
