In my less than professional opinion, I'd get a list of artists that people have recommended to you & then just start cruising their Instagram, get a feel for what their styles are like & then pick the one you feel fits your tattoo plan the best. Most tattoo artists nowadays are very active posting their work on Instagram, far more than on Facebook or their shop websites Make up your own mind about who's art you like. Do you have images of what you want done, like pics of the characters and the poses you want them in?

As far as getting the work done in sessions, how big a piece are you looking to get? Where do you want it? What's your pain tolerance? I personally like getting it all done in one sitting, I like having the finished product right then, but it's more painful. For bigger pieces getting the outline done and then colour fills later is pretty common.

Getting your first tattoo is the hardest. I drew mine and had it around for over a year and a half, showing it & telling people I was going to get it done real soon. It wasn't until someone gave it to me as a gift that I actually bit the bullet. It can take time though to fully realize what you want & what's important to you in life that you want to permanently represent it on your body. I have 7 done over the course of 9 years, but 6 of them have come in the past 2 years.

sweet, thanks for the info! it's gonna be something smallish-- something that goes on my forearm. i never thought about the instagram thing, so i'll definitely check that out

First sitting a couple weeks ago.

Finish it off this Sunday.  I will post a finished picture.

There are some amazing artists in Vancouver.   You don't have to go to Europe or Calgary to get a realism tattoo. That is ridiculous.   Google realism tattoos Vancouver.   We have incredible artists in town.  There are two great ones that work at adrenaline on Granville.   Check out

Richard Vega. Or Steve D . Both at adrenaline.

Tattoos are expensive.  Especially if you want quality.  DO NOT cheap out.

Take your time. Pick a good artist.

Do do it on a Saturday morning, you will be fine for work on Monday.

Just don't put a 6 hour foot tattoo in a work boot 3 days later.   I learned the hard way

When I was in the Navy in 1970 I got a tat on my leg in San Diego drunk on the way back from T Town a horrible tattoo. Got a couple of Tiger sharks on my shoulder from Sailor Jerry's joint in Honolulu the same trip....never found out what joint gave me a life long gift in Hep C.

Great story.

True tho the tat joints back in the day were not the cleanest, not anywhere close to what they are now. No health reg's or any of what artists today comply with.

Well improvements in sanitary conditions are great but the salty stories surrounding the tats from back in the day when many tats came out of an experience are interesting.

If you want ink I always recommend you wait a year. Find an artist that suits you and in that year if you still want it (and saved up more money) then go ahead. It's not a phase and future regret.

Also, you get what you pay for

for example:

Cheap-Tattoos-9.jpg

Though that's more the diff between 150 and 900 dollars but you get the point.

I'll post mine later to keep the thread rolling.

Yeah it was a strange trip for years. I got sicker than a dog for about 2 months and was told it was gall stones that was causing my skin to go yellow and piss the color of coke, eventually got better and went on with life. Many years later i gave blood at a blood drive and later got a letter from Health Canada that i had Hep C and seek help immediately. I go see a liver specialist and go through blood tests and ultra sound and sit there and wait stressed out for a week. I go back and see the specialist and he says here is your get out of jail free card. He says i am one of the very few that has only the antibodies and not the infection..very rare. Yeah a strange trip it's been.

Amazing.

well I had no idea it could get that serious.  Goes without saying it's good to have you around.  What a fight.

you probably have a bit of a chuckle every time you see someone with a swallow tattoo in a landlocked area.

I keep seeing people say 'wait a year' etc....

Impulse tattoos can be great and a great experience if you don't cheap out and do it right.

Here is my 5.5 hour foot tattoo last trip to Vegas.

I don't suggest foot tattoos.  Hahah. They really hurt.

I always heard foot tattoos are a problem because they fade over time where your shoe rubs them. Is that your experience?

Not yet, but I could see that being true.   They are definitely a lot tougher of a heal, that's for sure.  And it hurt more than any other tattoo I have.

I thought about getting a Canucks tattoo.  Such as all the Canucks logos on the right side of my back from top to bottom. I went to Montreal last year for a Playoff game, and there were free tattoos going on.  I wanted to get one, but unfortunately they were taking the first 15 people, so I got half of my head shaved off with a CH logo on the side of my head.

I had a significant other a few years ago, and he said he liked the Canucks.  I thought it was a great idea to go get matching Canucks tattoos as a date, and he freaked out and could not believe I would think something like that.

I will eventually get a tattoo of one of my favorite teams, when the perfect moment happens.

I have other tattoos.  A cross on my lower left hip, and 3 stars - one on the back of my neck, one on my inside wrist, and the other one on my lower back.

You really can't be surprised he freaked out.   Think about it.  A tattoo is forever.

Going and getting matching tattoos leaves at least a memory of that person every time they see that tattoo.  Not to mention something as stupid as the Canucks terrible logo.

It just a really bad idea.    And you aren't with that person anymore either.

His response was the right one.

And that's coming from someone who loves the Canucks, and bad tattoos.

Does anyone have a:

superman tattoo

gecko tattoo (ankle)

dolphin tattoo (ankle)

tramp stamp (you know where)

iron man triathlete tattoo

mom tattoo

barbed wire or similar tattoo (around the outside of the upper bicep but not all the way around to the inner bicep where it would hurt to continue)

?

:bigblush:

Maybe he just liked them and didn't love them? I am pretty flippant when it comes to tattoos so I don't take them too seriously. I'd love to get a matching tat with someone/anyone. My bf and I talk about getting matching tattoos all the time, but not so much "matching" as they are related (ex: one of us gets a hockey stick and the other a hockey goal- no these aren't the actual ideas though). That way if we ever break up the tattoos can stand alone, and also individually mean something to us as well as together.
