  1. I am with you on this. With how weak the right side is, he could easily play next year. I don't personally like the forwards at 10. I think its going to be Zegras, Newhook, Boldy; not really a fan of any of those. Broberg looks like a good add, but he plays the left side and is probably 2-3 years ways. Its not that the Canucks cannot afford to wait. It's just that it will still leave a gaping hole on the right side. Everyone is in love with BPA, but this maybe just the right pick on both fronts.
  2. I understand what you are saying, and you are THE prospect guy on this forum. I would not say that the average guy or above average guy on here knows anything about Chmelevski or Aho. There are a lot of smaller forwards in the organization. Maybe in the 5th round its not always best player available but you look at a team need like big bodied defensive defenseman. The guy is physically impressive, so I am not sure how anyone can say definitively that he wasn't the boom/bust guy. If he could think the game; with his body, he would be an NHL player. They took a shot on him improving the mental side of his game, and it just didn't really happen. I am not sure anyone was expecting him to ever be an offensive player in any capacity. The league is also every year getting faster, so maybe they pivoted their thinking on what they want the defense to look like. Gudbranson gone is an example of that. These picks are so low percentage and so hard to figure out. It's hard to say that there is any real skill at it when the best GM/Scout if probably shooting a 4-6% success ratio in this round while the average is doing 1-3%. In order to truely evaluate someones quality at making these types of selections you would at least have to give them 10 years to get any kind of statistical significance and there is no GM that gets that type of leash. I appreciate your depth of knowledge and insight on all of these kids. One of the rare must reads on this forum.
  3. One player has played an NHL game from the 5th round in 2017. Even if one of these guys ends up being a stud thats a 1/31 thats 3.2% chance. 4. they would be a good combo, but if its Pearson-Bo-Podkolzin the who is passing the puck to whom? Thats a pretty intense forecheck. They would even be great as a shutdown line getting 20 minutes a night. Then you need a playmaking center to play behind Petterson. Gaudette seems to have all the tools, but he may not be the guy. He is a great all around player, but I am always thinking if he was a little faster on that play, a little bit better of a stickhandler a little bit better of a shooter. It's like he is a 7/10 on everything. This is all good, but you need players with some dominant skills to drive lines.
  5. Broberg is a fine prospect. He just maybe 2-3 years out from an NHL game. If you take that approach with him, he has all the tools to be a top 4 D. Boldy is okay. Everyone is high on him because of the Tkachuk brothers. The Canucks need playmakers badly. I think Dach will end up like Getzlaf. I would trade up for him in a heartbeat. Podkolzin will play in the NHL on day one. I don't know ultimately how good he will be as his top end ceiling may not be that high, but he plays with maximum intensity and all his goals come from the middle of the size. He skates into contact rather than away from it. Zegras to me is the exact opposite player. Perimeter floater... Byram to me looks exactly like Morgan Reilly. That's a great player, but I am not sure you win a cup with him as your number one guy. Hughes, Kakko, Dach, Byram, Turcotte, Podkolzin, Caufeild, Kalyiev, Broberg would be my draft board if I were the Canucks GM. I think everyone else is 2nd line material
  6. Maybe he is fast in practice, maybe its not an issue of his foot speed but his intensity? or something else, but he always looked slow in games to me. I do think he wasn't developed properly. He should have been playing center the whole time. He could've ended up Dave Scatchard esque. That would've been sweet.
  7. is that a little mermaid reference? I got a little 3 year old girl, so we are all about that in this household. hahahaha
  8. If have completely ignored and proceeded, you just doubled down on your argument without addressing any of your points. Please tell me about these leafs players playing for the NHL club picked in rounds 2-7. Please tell me the probabilities of these picks making the NHL. Please tell me know many key players were acquired with picks 2-7 through trade. What research have you done? You simply said other bad teams have more bad picks. If the probability of a 7th rd pick is 1% to be a meaningful NHL hockey player then you could add 30 of them and it would still be an absolutely meaningless exercise because of the contract slot limitation. I know that somehow this was supposed to be the big got ya post. But the content in it is absolutely meaningless. I am absolutely stocked that the Canucks are not being run like some of these other teams with more picks. Now if they had more 1st picks I would be jealous.
  9. I am rethinking the Brett Hull comparison. I think he is more like Luc Robitaille. Boeser is a phenomenal shooter, but he is also tremendously lucky. He has had some real goofy goals this year. You create your own luck by getting shots through and on net frequently.
  10. I have no doubt he would get paid if he wanted to leave, but he has painted him self into a corner a little bit by consistently insisting that he only wants to stay. Negotiation is all about leverage, and he has given his away.
  11. Edler will take a discount to stay. I am sure if the offer is made now with a NTC, so he doesn't get traded at the deadline he will take less than market value. The guy loves being here. What I find hilarious is how everyone wanted to trade him for a bag of pucks now wants him to take a discount. I love Canucks fans. He is picking up a lot more assists now because of the powerplay and where the goals are coming from. The Sedins would always push the play down low as neither would look to shoot from side boards. Boeser and Petterson have been ripping one-timers all season with Edler sliding the puck over. Its crazy how a small detail like that can change someone's perception 180 about a player. He has been the top minute defenseman through every coach he has ever had in Vancouver. No real hockey people ever thought he was bad or close to it.
  12. Does Brock remind anyone else of Brett Hull? He can get his shot through at will and picks corners easily; but otherwise he is fairly slow and mediocre at just about everything else. This isn't a knock as scoring goals is the most difficult part of the game.
  13. He has been very impressive lately. He has made some really fantastic passes. Sent Granlund on a breakaway, and the pass to Horvat....He looks to be significantly growing as a player. He is already one of 4 players on the team that can consistently get a shot on net instead of having it instantly blocked. His defensive game is excellent especially his ability to steal pucks. I would like to see him deke the goalie more than shoot on breaks, but I am starting to feel like if you give him two years; he will be top 3 player on the team. Brock has a ridiculously lethal shot, but he is pretty much useless otherwise. Virtanen at this point if he keeps developing can surpass him.
  14. He is getting his shots through and picking corners on some of them. He looks to be a much better shooter than advertised. I havent been following as closely as some, but I remember he was touted as Tanev esque at the draft. Limited offense but mistake free. It seems like Bo Horvat being Mr. Intangibles but bad skater at the draft Joulevi is actually transforming into an offensive defenseman. Again with limited observation, this really seems like Sami Salo all over again. I know thats not as sexy as say Shea Weber, but I would be very happy with that. Salo also took a while to be an impact player in the NHL.
  15. You make good deals when you can. Buffalo is a bottom ten team that traded for two middle six players and a late 1st which has a very low chance of turning into anything remotely resembling O'Reilly and the 2nd is from 2021? Tage Thompson has very medicore AHL numbers. I know little about him, but he is probably a two way guy like Gaunce. You can sign middle six players all day in free agency. O'Reilly is a top talent and only 27. You should be getting something that can at the very least become an O'Reilly in return like a top 10 pick or a grade A prospect. Buffalo got Raymond, Ballard and late 1st...
  16. Vancouver's version of this trade is Sutter, Granlund, Gaunce, 2nd and 3rd round picks. Vancouver is picking at least 20 spots higher than St. Louis; so 1st and 2nd wouldn't be necessary here. Maybe throw in a 3rd to balance it out; but who in their right mind wouldn't trade that for O'Reilly?
  17. obviously Jake has more long run potential, but if we are talking about on ice product right now then its easy Granlund for me. I think the Higgins comparison is very on point as well.
  18. why? I dont see a point of a late 2nd. Granlund is a good player. Maybe not good enough to be a difference maker, but you very very rarely find that with a late 2nd. I think that Granlund+2nd or 3rd round pick for Minnesota's 1st round pick would be more interesting. If you are going to trade, at least do it for a possible upgrade. I mean whats the point of giving away Granlund for a player that has a low probability to be better than him that will take 4 years to develop into something. I like him over Baertschi, Goldobin, Gaunce, Gagner, Eriksson, Virtanen, Motte, Archibald.
  19. If McDavid is the bait, then I really hope Jim is the big dumb fish. That would be AWESOME! I would easily trade anything for McDavid.
  20. I really don't understand why he is playing wing. He is a big guy who plays well defensively. He has a horrible shot. I am pretty sure he is solid on faceoffs. So why is he playing LW? I honestly would have 0 complaints if he played center and could manage 50% or better on the dot. This is what I would like to see as far as experiments are concerned at the end of the year.
  21. Brendan Gaunce 85 NHL games 1 Goal CDC be like He stands in the right place more often than the average hockey player, you just don't get it!

He's a good fourth line guy and seemed to be developing some chemistry with JV and Granlund. Not all first round picks become top 6 guys. Riley Sheahan had two goals in 80 games last year. Still a useful player.

      "doesn't play a physical game"

Wut? He's one of the few guys on the team that is actually throwing his weight around. fp

so he hits more than Sam Gagner or Henrik Sedin or Sven Baertschi or whomever so what.  That doesn't mean he is a physical player.  Most of his body contact is without any malice or aggression.  He is a marshmallow that makes contact because his coach tells him he has to instead of actually wanting to engage.  You can see that by the way he hits and his general demeanor.  All of that would be fine if he had some actual skill which he doesn't.

The world's best player at standing in shooting lanes has once again been rescued by CDC.  Dude you just don't get it!

Reggie how you can say that he is undervalued is mind boggling.  There is almost 10 people who felt the need to respond to this to defend him.  There isn't many players on the Canucks that get this much support from the fan base.

I know its not necessarily constructive to harp on a 4th line player being bad, but he has played a lot more than Jake minutes wise.  Burmistrov has played less.  Rodin, Goldobin, heck give me some shampoo.  Same player but is very solid at face-offs and is marginally quicker.

Every coach has his pets.  Markstrom and Gaunce are clearly Green's.  This isn't bugging people yet but I am just getting in on the ground floor of the new Aaron Rome/Jason Megna.  Got to buy low!

  22. I am so happy with this pick. All I need is Liljgren! hookem up JB!!!!
  23. What are your thoughts about moving the #5 for the #13 and #15 picks? I am sure Vegas would do it. I think Tippet, Liljegren, and Petterson are the top 3 plays I want in this draft. In my humble opinion these are the top 3 players 5 years from now. I think that we could get at least one of them for sure and maybe two.
  24. Sam Bennett is also very underwhelming as a 4th overall pick, so maybe the pulls up are important?
  25. They both seem like Olli Maata to me. Nothing wrong with that, but kind of not fantastic either...
