    I would rather Tavares be in our division for 8 years than win the Cup with the Leafs. But I think the Leafs win the JT sweeps.

      Here's a random thought.  I wonder if a team could sign a player (like Tavares) to a one year maximum salary deal, and an eight year (more reasonably priced) extension to go with it?  The rules are that you can't sign an extension until after July 1st of the last year of the deal, so why not sign both deals at once?

      It’s a good thought, but extensions for one year deals can’t be signed until January IIRC.
