  1. The guy doesn’t even know the basics of being a defenceman. He’s never where he should be on any play. He peaked his capability in the OHL. Florida and Chicago organizations couldn’t get him to develop and somehow we can? With how great we’ve developed our players? Sorry I’m not buying it, I’ve seen enough. He’s not the sole reason for the Canucks struggles, but he plays a part in it and let’s just say I have trouble remembering any stand out good plays in a game from him. Whereas I have trouble remembering any stand out bad plays in a game from Burroughs. Analytics backs up this eye test too.
  2. Few things about this lineup. 1) The Stillman experiment is over. It’s frustrating to continue to see him in the lineup and paired with Myers. Analytics and the eye test show Burroughs to be a better D-man. I’m really starting to get tired of Bruce playing the vets who don’t deserve the ice time over the rookies. It reminds me way too much of Green. Play the best team possible regardless of how much a player costs in cap space. That’s how you win games in this day and age. 2) Boeser deserves a scratch, maybe it’ll light a fire under him. He may be getting some points, but he’s not himself, not even close to his potential. I’m ok with doing this to a player sometimes. It sends an important message both to do better and that your ice time isn’t guaranteed. Look at how Kuzmenko has played since his scratch. If Boeser is as good as we hope he’ll come back strong. 3) Why on earth did Bruce break up the Miller, Horvat, Hoglander line just when Hoglander was starting to get comfortable, create chemistry and gel with his line mates?Everyone had a bad game against Washington. It wasn’t only him. Lines don’t just magically produce if you put players on it, it takes time to learn your team mates tendencies, especially for a fairly new NHL player. He was working hard, but wasn’t getting results. Hopefully he stays there now. 4) Glad to see Studnicka back, we haven’t really had a chance to see his caliber of play yet. Can always use another center. On a random aside I think we as a fanbase underestimated how much Pettersson and Miller made Boeser look good on that lotto line or else sadly his personal struggles have beaten him down if not broken him.
  3. Tough call, but I say no. Only jerseys retired should be for players who perform at a high level, are among the best in the league during their time in the NHL and are with the team for basically from the beginning until retirement. Lu as good as he is played with Florida for 11 seasons. He played with Vancouver for only 8. Had he started and stayed as a Canuck it definitely should be, but he wasn’t. If you think about any guy and he doesn’t automatically scream NHL legend who played solely or mostly on the Canucks team their jersey shouldn’t be retired. Smyl, Bure, Linden, Naslund and the Sedins do that (Naslund being the most iffy of those imo). Their numbers can only be pictured with those players wearing them in a Canucks jersey. Luongo doesn’t. Ring of Honour is definitely appropriate for his performance here as a Canuck though.
  4. Exactly. Would much rather have a PPG JT Miller player who sticks up for his team mates and misses or screws up defensively sometimes then oh I don’t know about every other player not named Pettersson, Horvat or Hughes who still screw up defensively in games, don’t do anything when a team mate is bowled over and don’t produce at a 80 point per season pace. There’s a lot of defensive mistakes made by this team in games, it’s the sole reason why they’ve lost so much, but every player is guilty of doing so, it’s not just Miller. Does it drive me crazy that he doesn’t play D as hard as he plays F? Yes. Should he work as hard on the back check and in the dzone as he does in the ozone? Yes. Does he still provide more value to our team then about 75% of the current roster? Yup. People really need to get over his re-signing. It’s happened, time to move on. He’s with us now and at 8m a season providing 80 points isn’t exactly something to get bent out of shape over given all the other problems with the team currently.
  5. Bear had the best plus/minus of any player let alone D-man being an even 0 in a game where our opponents scored 5 against us. He’s been playing well, but is still adjusting to a new team. Only Schenn and Burroughs have played better then him. How many times have we seen him take the man off the puck allowing his team mates to pick it up and get it out of our own end, win a puck battle on the boards or block an opponents pass/shot? He’s currently on a 30 point full season pace. He’s ranked 85th as a D in the NHL for PPG percentage. Other than Quinn Hughes and Alex Edler we haven’t had that kind of points production from any player on our blue line since Jason Garrison in 2013. When on the ice, here’s the expected goals for and against for all of our D in order of best to worst. Obviously the more someone plays the higher the numbers get, so net is the most accurate measuring stick of performance at even strength. Schenn xGF 16.2 xGA 14.6 net +1.6 Burroughs xGF 8.6 xGA 8.9 net -0.4 (rounded) Bear xGF 10 xGA 10.7 net -0.6 (rounded) Hughes xGF 16.6 xGA 17.3 net -0.7 Rathbone xGF 2.9 xGA 4.7 net -1.8 OEL xGF 17.5 xGA 20.1 net -2.6 Stillman xGF 6.3 xGA 9.9 net -3.6 Myers xGF 14.4 xGA 19.3 net -4.9 He’s ranked 158th as a D with a net -0.6 rating. Since November 12th after the Leafs game Bear has had a higher xGF vs xGA rating in every single game except Nov. 21st in the 5-4 loss to Vegas. Meaning he’s improved his stats in 8 of the 9 games since then. Canucks went 5-4 and were out scored 32-30 in those 9 games. Bear has been a lifeline for the team and currently plays like a top 4 D on our roster. It’s not coincidence Canucks went 2-5-2 (6/18 points .333) without him and 7-7-1 (15/30 points .500) since he joined us. Even better: he’s still improving his stats and play as he gets more and more comfortable here. This isn’t his ceiling, it’s his beginning. Paying only a 5th for him was highway robbery. Leave Bear out of this, he’s one of the lone bright spots on the team this year.
  6. Stillman is very appropriately named. He needs to be permanently scratched. Such a terrible trade.
  7. My thoughts: Fantastic second half of the game. Inches from a draw and the first ever point in the World Cup. Canada was competitive against Belgium ranked 2nd and Morocco ranked 22nd in the world fifa rankings. We are 41st. We basically played 1.5/3 games of exceptional soccer. Croatia was the only disappointment for me. Overall it was an impressive performance for a country ranked 41st in the world and at their first World Cup in 36 years. I think we exceeded any realistic expectations going in. I will always remember that 1st goal. Davies provided me with the memory of a lifetime like when Crosby scored the golden goal. The fact the World Cup is expanding to 48 teams means Canadians can at a base line expect we qualify for every World Cup from here on out, so our first appearance certainly won’t be our last even after we host in 2026. We do belong on this stage, that much is clear. We have holes, especially in midfield and D that need help if we want to go past the Group stage. We lack depth. We have way too many positions where an injury massively changes the quality of the player replacing them. One of the biggest challenges in the World Cup is having enough people to cope with injuries with and not lose any level of performance. A few bounces here or there and we’d see Canada potentially moving forward this year. That’s sports for you, sometimes you get lucky, others you don’t. The team as a whole needs more speed capabilities, both in passing and sprinting. If you can beat your opponent in a race you get far greater scoring opportunities then if you’re only matching or slightly falling behind. Same with handling and passing the ball at high speed. Quick passes and movements with the ball leads to more scoring chances because the opponents D is constantly having to react to your movement. They’re always a step behind, which gives you an advantage. Borjan I’m sorry to say needs to retire. It wasn’t just the obvious mistake today, in most of the goals scored against us he was out of basic goaltending position. There were a lot of stoppable goals had he been where he needed to be. Whereas in the qualifying games up to the big stage he was spectacular, he was pretty terrible when it mattered most. I think Crepeau should take over, hopefully his injury heals soon. It’s nothing against him personally, his story is inspiring and his choice to represent Canada and how he’s done over his career is worthy of love and praise, but we need the best team possible on the world stage. Vitoria also. Bad positioning and not enough soccer IQ or speed. Never got to hear his background story, but I’m sure it’s of someone we should be proud of as a country for his performance wearing our jersey. That said again, we need the best team possible. Everyone else was pretty good and I’m supportive of Herdman as head coach again for the next Cup.
  8. I’m not sure why you think I disagree with what you’re saying? I only commented about Stillman being one of the worst trades so far of this new management. Is that not a factual statement? I think you’re making some assumptions that aren’t true.
  9. No problem! I have it recorded, so I’m going to dive into it pretty soon. Looking forward to doing so. Loved the Breaking Ice series. Hope you’ll be able to watch it soon too.
  10. It was a replay. It first aired on Sept 30th. They’ll keep scheduling it for a while, I just don’t know offhand when that’d be. It’s definitely only on TSN though. I know this because all the other sports specials from football and basketball to soccer and hockey have only been there. SN gets the rights to the games themselves, not the background stories about who plays in them.
  11. You’re not wrong on part of the reason why these hires happened so suddenly, but two things to keep in mind. 1) If society or the league can only change for the better if all the reasons behind their actions of change are for the right reasons we’d never get anything improved. Electric vehicles are being bought by some only because it saves people a lot of money on gas. Environmental action being supported by big business for some is only because weather is causing their profits to suffer/plummet. Smoking only became restricted because governments were afraid of lawsuits from deaths. Gay marriage was supported by some only because they don’t think government should be in bedrooms. I could go on for any societal improvement, it takes coalitions of people to create change, ones who have differing reasons on why they support something. 2) Hiring minorities or female executives regardless of the motivation behind it is still a good thing for the league. Once some get the top jobs it opens the door to others. It’s hard to stop the pipeline once you turn it on. All it takes is that first step. The more diverse perspectives you can get the better your hockey team will be because a black man, a woman and a white man will probably have different views on some important issues and decisions within the hockey organization. The NHL has a long way to go to shed the old boys club reputation, but imperfect progress is still progress and worthy of celebrating.
  12. They looked pretty gassed to me, especially late in the 3rd and in OT. Playing Vegas, Colorado and then a back to back in Vegas and San Jose in less then a day takes a lot out of you considering the caliber of opponents they faced. Hopefully they’re feeling a little more rested for tonight.
  13. It was on TSN, I don’t think that special about his hockey camp in First Nations territory is available on SN. It’s called Ethan Bear Camp of Dreams. Maybe TSN has exclusive rights to all the extra hockey specials like the one about breaking the glass ceiling. I’ve never seen it on SN. My suggestion if it’s not available On Demand or on YouTube is to be patient, it usually shows up on the tv schedule once a month if not more frequently. Same with the other special.
  14. Not surprised at all you’re using the cancel culture angle. Here’s what it really means: having consequences for indecent actions. Oh no, such a terrible thing for our evolving society. Harassment isn't real it’s only cancel culture. Racist comments aren’t real it’s only cancel culture. Homophobia and bigotry isn’t real it’s only cancel culture. We should just let everyone say anything they want anywhere without any repercussions, cuz that’s the real freedom! Musk does it right! The more people fight back against the majority of people demanding we become a better civilization the more people will stand up against it. Now of course there’s two sides to every story and most of the time the truth is in between what each person says. We don’t yet know Émilie’s version and maybe we never will. However dismissing an employee complaint completely as cancel culture for being fired before an hr investigation could be conducted right after being promoted is jumping to the same conclusions you are criticizing. You are automatically assuming Doerrie’s in the wrong and guilty of what she’s been accused of. Isn’t that what you’re complaining other people are doing in regards to Castonguay? We may never find out her or the Canucks side in this, but we can’t draw a definitive conclusion at this point either way. If there isn’t at least some aspects of this whole story that (not just the mental health or Doerrie’s statement, there’s more to it then that) at the very least makes you question why she was fired when she was then you’re not looking at this objectively and are guilty of what you’re mad at others for doing. Doerrie clearly plays a bad part in this story too, no one can say she doesn’t, but I’m betting it’s not all on Castonguay and it’s also not all on Doerrie. It’s probably in between, but we have no idea who shares more fault, so being definitive in either direction is just preconceived notions to fit a situation and not letting evidence tell you the truth.
  15. I learned the hard way being banned from the spca which neglected to tell me at the time that two female kittens are a big no no. They will constantly fight and attack each other. The more aggressive dominant one bullies the other until it gets so bad the non dominant one refuses to eat or drink water and nearly dies from malnutrition. Please take my unfortunate experience seriously and return or give away one of your females. I loved my other girl kitty too at the time and still miss her to this day, but I had to return her for the other ones safety and well being. It’s a tough choice, but it’s best to do it quickly before the big medical bills start rolling in.
  16. Kyle Burroughs B Oliver Ekman-Larsson B Guillaume Brisebois B+ Ethan Bear A- Luke Schenn A- Quinn Hughes B+ Jack Rathbone B- Riley Stillman F Tyler Myers C No one’s been great. Burroughs is a decent depth D. OEL isn’t as bad as some make him out to be, but also is well off last year’s form. Brisebois showed well, but is a depth D. Bear and Schenn are by far the most impactful. Hughes isn’t nearly as good as last season. Rathbone has speed and that’s about it. Stillman has been godawful. Myers has been pretty bad.
  17. You can be a dirtbag hockey player on the ice and be a good person off the ice. I hated the Bruins after 2011, but equalizing in game actions to real life conduct on matters bigger then hockey is misguided. I hate Marchand on the ice, but respect and like him off.
  18. Every person in the world is capable of good and evil given the right circumstances full stop, but not every person follows through on actually turning capability into ability for either. You will never defeat evil in the world, it’ll never happen, but you can lessen it by being a good example and punish those who commit it so others aren’t as likely to follow that path.
  19. Yeah you weren’t clear about this at all. Had you stated this I wouldn’t have responded. Appreciate the clarification. It’s a reasonable theory, but I hope that if it doesn’t regress you’ll follow through on your stated support for restricting racist tweets. Me personally, I’ve learned many times over the years how the “free speech” advocates like Musk aren’t actually in support of all free speech, but only the right-wing and bigotry speech, so put me in the I don’t think he lifts a finger to fix the problem camp. We’ll see who ends up correct in the coming months of which we already have some evidence of hypocrisy on his end.
  20. Wait, you mean Musk only supports free speech for the right wing conservatives he supports? Didn’t see that coming that his mission for “free speech” is a farce to get gullible morons to support him without them or him actually being in support of the speech he doesn’t like or support. Ample evidence in this thread of that one. If you support free speech, support it all and be consistent in calling out Musk for restricting those he disagrees with otherwise you don’t actually have any beliefs, you have an agenda.
  21. Less and less of these people each generation that passes, but they will always exist in society. Maybe some young boys aspiring to be professional athletes or just in general who are currently bullying another kid or on the same hateful cruel path of Miller will start to think twice if it means no career in their preferred sport or widespread condemnation from the public. Until actions have consequences no one raised like that (and yes his parents shoulder a lot of the blame) will self reflect on their conduct.
  22. Barring a shocking turnaround this is definitely the worst trade by far of the new management team. It’s a lose-lose-lose end result. Lost a 2C and lost a 2nd round pick for a guy that makes every D on our roster look like Cale Makar in comparison. Starting to get nervous about their capability to assess/evaluate NHL talent. Just a terrible decision.
