  1. I think, yeah, they essentially had to turn into a ponzi-type situation. But I'm not sure they were hacked, and I don't really believe the ICO thing either But there's pretty strong documentation (which the company has confirmed) of them 'misplacing' 70,000 ether in a faulty contract, for example. That isn't them being hacked, it's them being stupid and losing $20m through a simple mistake which cost them assloads of money out of pocket. I think it's just a still-unraveling thing, and the truth will come out sooner or later. The thing about BTC, LTC, and ETH is that it's all documented. Once the proper wallets are identified, we'll be able to see when and if they are moved, and centralized exchanges will undoubtedly refuse those coins. If that happens, then we'll know someone is lying along the way. If it doesn't happen, then we had one pulled over on us, and there's a very deep scheme going on somewhere. there's lots of chain analysis going on on reddit, at the sub r/bitcoinCA, some of it's pretty interesting, but lots of debate still on the validity of some wallets If Cotten ISN'T actually dead, and he left his wife and co-workers to face the outcome, either they'll rat him out or the watchful eyes of those spurned customers will find out, IMO. They will literally be on the run their entire lives at this point. His wife has already been doxed (address, contact information) and will certainly have a miserable life going forward if there's something more to this story. If not, and this just is a bizarre story of someone dying of a traditionally non-fatal disease, then it's just another hard-earned lesson of why you shouldn't leave lots of money on an exchange, which can go under at any minute another good sub for breaking info is r/QuadrigaCX
  2. money is an arbitrary concept - a lie agreed upon that X has value. in order for a new type of money to grow, more people need to agree on its value. the point of bitcoin wasn't for it to instantaneously become a sovereign currency to exist outside of the corrupt USD scope. obviously there were, and are, issues - issues that have existed and been discussed since before bitcoin was even created - scaling being chief among them but who cares if people sell right now or in the past? my point wasn't that people should hold on to bitcoin forever and ever and never spend it. again, how else would miners - the backbone of bitcoin - afford to mine? if you're asking how bitcoin itself disrupts the financial system, then that's a different question maybe it is, and even if it were 99.9% it still wouldn't matter. what matters is the .1% who recognize the purpose and keep chipping away at the ideological intention behind it. luckily, though, with each bubble more people jump on and stay on do they take profit? sure. but the point is they learn about the world of technology and new money, which is much, much, much more fascinating and indicative of the future than, say, going to your local bank and buying some boomer's stocks.
  3. ...so? that doesn't change bitcoin's purpose. the purpose was not to be an investment for fiat. but regardless, of course you can trade it for cash, how else would the market grow? how else would miners cover their overhead? my point was that the purpose of the project isn't to make early investors rich in usd - meaning, bitcoin isn't a ponzi
  4. I would honestly be surprised if the Vancouver Canucks are even a thing in 50 years. Not only are most pro sports teams not very popular outside of their immediate jurisdiction, but the very medium they rely so heavily on for their money (cable TV) is dying so quickly that I'm wondering how pro sports will sustain their current level of outrageous costs of operation once the advertisement revenue dries up I think it's kind of curious how the NFL started airing games on twitch recently - not exactly surprisingly though, since ESPN has been on the brink of bankruptcy for a few years now. Only a matter of time before it goes under, and the NFL and co. will have to find a new way to target an audience. I highly doubt streaming on twitch brought in any new fans, mind you I get why someone wouldn't like "e-sports" or whatever, it's a total cultural thing. But it's going nowhere but up, whereas traditional sports are going nowhere but down (except the NBA and a couple of soccer leagues, which are anomalies in that they show global/cultural growth, even today) I'm above your listed demographic (in my 30s), but I grew up playing games competitively in the early days, so I'm definitely not new to this. But even with that said, I can EASILY say I had more fun at the Dota 2 International in Vancouver last summer than I've ever had at a traditional sporting event - it's just such a different culture, and a significantly better one, at that, for my money. Less about boozy aggressive men shouting at 20 year old athletes, and more about a community, in a weird way. I'm curious about whether making teams city-based will make a good foundation for a market though. What reason do I have for liking this team? It just seems like corporate overhead, branding. The real selling point for e-sports, imo, is the individuality - the ability to differentiate players/playstyles/personalities. This is something most pro sports teams cannot do at all. I will always like a good twitch personality before I like some corporate branding which is meant to appeal to me just because of geography
  5. sure, of course that's a bubble. bitcoin has had numerous bubbles in its short life - it has dropped 50-80% of its value plenty of times now, but it keeps coming back, and its yearly lows keep getting higher. i don't think the stock market is a scam per se, but obviously the stock market harbours loads of scams. but that doesn't mean it's a scam itself - it's a great way for the wealthy to get more wealthy, that's for sure i'm not heavily invested in bitcoin with money, not really. but i am interested in it, yeh. if you're at all curious about it and you have netflix, i recommend the movie 'banking on bitcoin' as a decent way to spend 90 minutes
  6. nice to see Kraken coming up with a lot of Quadriga's wallet addresses, and the grassroots movements to document the potential sources of Quadriga's "lost" funds. if the keys AREN'T lost, it's going to be pretty obvious when and and where the attached funds move
  7. but it's literally not, by definition, a ponzi scheme. whether it reminds you of one or not doesn't really matter buying bitcoin isn't investing and hoping the next person will pay more ...unless that's the reason why you bought bitcoin but bitcoin, itself, has nothing to do with making profit in fiat, it has to do with disrupting the broken, totally corrupt fiat system. which, by the way, would also be a ponzi scheme if its definition were also applicable to bitcoin. so would buying a picasso. so would buying stocks, etc. yes, some will profit off bitcoin, and some (who sell) will lose. that is the nature of buying and selling literally anything
  8. it's a meme at this point. don't store on exchanges. how many have to be hacked/go under for people to realize this? unfortunately, 2 or 3 people i'm close to lost a decent chunk of change with quadriga. really sad for them, and i hope it works out the conversation around bitcoin remains fascinating to me - i don't post about it here (active on reddit, took a course on it, read numerous books, still run my mining equipment - although not consistently). nothing has changed to make me lose faith in the space/culture. in fact, i think (know) the uncomfortable truth is that this purge had to happen. a lot of bad projects and bad actors needed to be kicked out. i think a lot more exchanges and altcoins will go under before we see a significant growth again
  9. bill murray stories - 3/10. the entire movie could be summarized in a 2 minute clip they play from Murray himself - instead, they drag it out just over an hour where fratboys and other bland people talk about thinly veiled celebrity worship best of enemies (2015) - 9/10. doc about William F Buckley Jr and Gore Vidal's debates on national tv. seriously engaging movie. funny, thought provoking, super relevant to our time. already feel like watching it again, tbh
  10. the favourite 7.5/10 wasn't super in the mood for a 2 hour period drama, but still went with it. not sure if that hurts my rating. big fan of yorgos lanthimos (the lobster, killing of a sacred deer), so i had big expectations for this and it didn't quite meet them. still enjoyed it though. lots of quirk, dark humour/satire. nice blend of history + modernity, but i prefer my period movies to be more accurate than exaggerated, so the fictional elements don't resonate with me super well either way, it's extremely well done in many ways. the costume design, especially of the men, is hilarious. much of the dialogue is sharp. acting is wonderful. but not sure it's one i'll ever feel compelled to re-watch.
  11. was trying to decide on a movie to watch tonight and this was on my list because McQueen but then i watched the trailer and oh my god it just looks so bad. Viola Davis is just SO hammy imo. i can remember her overcooked screeching in Fences like i watched it yesterday.
  12. i knew i had made at least one post on here about bryan singer, the tremendously overrated director behind normie favourites xmen and the usual suspects looks like he's finally getting #metoo'd into oblivion. i wonder what took so long? allegations against this guy and his twink parties have been around for ages. oh well. ahem, another one bites the dust.
  13. depends how deep, or what kind of analysis you're looking for i suppose my fav film critic is, by far, richard brody at the new yorker (online). i don't agree with a whole lot of what he says, but i think he's talented and pompous enough to always be engaging. he seems like a bit of a contrarian at times, but i like that. he's kinda like the anti-anthony lane, who is their regular critic (in print). vulture.com (online edition of New York Magazine's culture section) is pretty good sometimes i used to love dana stevens' work at slate.com, but slate has gone so far downhill and is so over-the-top political at this point that i don't really bother with her anymore. if you want politically-tinged criticism, then there are better options (such as the new statesman, maybe?) problem with reddit is that so many posts are just like "i just saw (whatever) and it's the best movie of all time, and the cinematography is the best of all time" and then people agree using superlative language of their own. reddit's entire thing is just karma farming, so i kind of resent it. gotta stand out by using big language to describe your big ideas... or else why bother? the sub r/truefilm tries to circumvent this problem by being more 'serious' than, say, r/movies, but it still feels too dishonest for me, personally
  14. sisters brothers - 6.5/10 think the book is great. the movie is much less so. i hate those 'omg the book was better' conversations, but in this case i can't help it. the book balanced so many things well: quirk and politics, gore and sentimentality, etc. but instead of even attempting to do this stuff well, the movie just barely glazes over it all. the result is a pretty generic western with a little bit of heart at best. apparently the book's author, patrick dewitt, had done an original script/treatment for the movie but it was scrapped by the late-addition director who wanted his friend to write it. i bet the original script would have been significantly better.
  15. Not trying to be a hater, but PoE FEELS LIKE a free game to me. the graphics are okay, but nothing special. the gameplay is nice, but nothing even remotely new. the mechanics and "feel" of the game don't feel nearly as polished as some other triple A titles imo I get why people enjoy it, but for me it really struggled to keep my attention or stand out as much more than a Diablo clone For my money, Dota is the best free game by far.
  16. $79.99, just like almost every other new game dude, how old are you? games were MORE expensive back when i was a kid in the 90s, and yet were created with a fraction of the development cost and offered a fraction of the playing time.
  17. all for legalization of this and most other things. all things? whatever. but holy hell, that traditional-if-cliche subculture of stoners sure is an obnoxious one
  18. chikorita fest caught a few shinies, but none good
  19. hereditary - 9.5/10 eighth grade - 9/10 killing of a sacred deer - 7/10 death of stalin - 6/10 while we're young - 5/10
  20. don't care who wrote it, this song is unbelievably good
  21. what's up with j cole and godawful hooks? some of these songs have really nice style and production, but the hooks just ruin it for me. the cutoff, in particular, should be a great track but kill edward just ruins it. hook on photograph is awful too. KOD is a pretty smooth song, though j cole will always just be whatever to me. always struck me as the type of rapper that teenagers like, or something but im sure the problem is me. not much in rap interests me like it used to
