  1. Not only did Bains get two shorties, he got them against, arguably, the best team in the AHL.
  2. Generally, centres need to be better than average skaters because they have to be 200 foot responsible players. Brock is a below average skater who is not particularly reliable defensively. Centres need to have strong backchecking proclivities - again, not Brock. I believe Brock has to become a reliable two-way winger before there is any consideration whatsoever about being moved to centre. We have a surfeit of right wingers: if neither of Raty nor Sasson are ready, and Dries nor Aman do not appear to be that guy, then we could explore a trade for one, and maybe recover some cap space at the same time.
  3. Funny how the ‘trash’ goaltending affected +/- of OEL twice as much as the next worse defenceman. Maybe you might want to go back and examine pk goals against the Canucks and see how often those goals were cross crease passes when OEL was on the ice. Now, it turns out that he got an ankle injury in a tournament prior to this season, but that doesn’t negate the fact that he played like crap. At the time that he went on LTIR, he had the worst +/- of all defencemen playing an equivalent number of games. Now this is apart from his massive contribution to the Canuck’s league worst pk at the time. When he finally went on LTIR everything improved for the Canucks except the pp. Now, the blame for playing OEL hurt can be shared with the medical staff and management - but that, too, doesn’t erase how bad he was, it just provides a rationalization for it.
  4. Over this past year, OEL was pretty much the worst defenceman in the NHL. Other than his massive contract, what justification is there for playing him? I thought the objective is to win. That’s not just about Rathbone, on the left D after Hughes, a couple of other D are affected by this, I.e. Wolanin, Hirose, and defenders who play either side - Burroughs and Woo, for instance. Now, supposedly, OEL was injured at a national tournament. Well, if he was, why is he playing? He was entirely a liability: put him on the LTIR. Heal him up and gain the advantage over his cap space. We will find out this fall if that was truly the problem. It does not make any sense to play an injured player clearly unable to play at a satisfactory level. Playing OEL for 46 games Ayn we’ll be the reason we missed the playoffs. Demko also was clearly not physically right for the first part of the season. He was playing injured. Why? Pearson appears to believe that his situation was not handled medically properly - what is going on here?
  5. I didn’t see Rathbone get much pk time before, but he has been taking a regular pk shift now, and he’s been out in the past couple minutes to protect leads. That is good.
  6. I just really like the way he thinks the game and plays the game. You can see that he works hard and because of that his skating will even get stronger. It won’t be his brains or grit that keep him out of the NHL.
  7. Won’t take too long to see if they know.
  8. Well, it is the owner’s team, but owning doesn’t exempt him from poor decisions.
  9. Okay, he managed the cap well, is you opinion? He brought rafts of talent outside the first two rounds over his nine year term?
  10. Benning's competency extended to detailing garbage trucks - nothing that involved money or talent.
  11. Yep. No free riders on this team. You will play 200 foot hockey or play elsewhere - unless you are the goalie!
  12. Benning made the playoff first year with Gillis's team. You said it. 70% of the team are Benning guys and look where that team is: capped out, no first round pick for three years until Rutherford comes, buried under impossible to move contracts, players lost because he screwed up the cap, didn't move on guys we needed to re-sign, the list of Benning idiocracy is virtually endless, the only draft hits beyond high second picks to work out he traded for nothing.. About the only thing he was good at was sucking up to ownership absolutely determined to be nothing but mediocre.
  13. I like the way he plays that 2 D set on the pp. It is a work in progress, but it’s definitely improving. With the way that Hughes passes the puck, that might make an interesting wrinkle in Vancouver.
  14. Yep. Sasson was getting hit a lot, but he kept getting up and making great plays. Karlsson is so good at protecting the puck long enough to make good plays, Klimovich plays up to his size, and Nielsen thinks he’s bigger than Klimovich - he is a joy to watch.
  15. He has been so hot for a while now. So did Wolanin and Woo. Every time some opponent crossed the blue line and the camera followed the play into the zone, at the back edge of the screen Woo was smashin the crap out of some poor sap.
  16. I believe we can also roll out Podkolzin and Johansson. I sure like our goaltending and D.
  17. Yep. Danika was playing like the big guy that he is, and that sure got an opponent annoyed enough to take a penalty. That means: do it more! First playoff game. He and his line mates will be much mir3 loose for game two. They will have awesome games!
  18. Remember that at the beginning of 5he season there was no visible system in Van. That is particularly rough on puck moving D, they need to know where their outlets are likely to be. Hughes is an amazing player for his ability to scan the ice, and so quick to escape long enough to improve his options. But even Hughes had an awful year before he developed those skills. I find it interesting that Colliton used a 2D pp last night in Abby with Rathbone and Wolanin on the ice together - pairing a great playmaker with a shooter. By the last couple of pp’s, they had that sorted, and it resulted in Rathbone’s tally from Wolanin.
  19. Yes, on rebuild. The sticking point was letting the Sedins finish up as Canucks. Doing that really set us back, though it might turn out to also have some major positive ramifications in the teaching of fundamentals and team play. When his injury heals, I would imagine for Podz. At the end of his time in Abby, he was a major force.
  20. I think they are looking for room for a 3C… which they could accomplish with room to spare if any of Myers, Garland, or Boeser are moved. I believe Tocchet’s has an issue with Boeser’s fitness. A healthy, fit Boeser could be a major asset… if not fit he would represent a difficult trade. I also think they are looking for some size, speed and grit for the wings to make Tocchet’s system work.
  21. Granted it’s a limited showing, but Lekkerimaki reminds me of Naslund in his attributes and style… to be seen how far that vaunted comparison goes. Also to be seen how much he can develop with a healthy training off-season.
  22. Yes, but Boston kept accumulating picks instead handing them out like candy on Halloween. Boston started rebuilding right after their Stanley Cup win in 2011. And yes, every team has their misses, which is exactly why they accumulate picks. Now, great scouting and development helps to raise a team’s success ratio. Vancouver has greatly improved its development by moving the farm to Abby, and even more so by adding a great coaching staff that includes Colliton and the Sedins. I watched Abby last night - this team plays great team defence, and will probably add Johansson in the next game or so. Abby features two goalies with NHL experience, three defencemen with NHL experience, and Hoglander led the attack last night, with Podkolzin to be added. I was very impressed with Sasson and Raty in the middle - they both play complete games.
  23. He will at least be fighting for it. Looks like we are blessed with Hughes, cursed with OEL, and have Hirose and Wolanin fighting over the three spot - which is a good situation to be in. If Hirose and Wolanin really play well, it will be hard to suffer a continuation of poor play from OEL. Apparently, OEL was playing hurt. We shall see if he has healed, or not, or if what we saw is actually where he’s at.
