  1. He plays pretty heavy actually - look at his TK/GV stats and try to watch any puck battles he gets involved in. He has such a low COG and strong legs it makes him a tough guy to move off a puck. He could be more aggressive but has likely been coached to avoid getting himself out of position - I think as he confidence continues to rise with his success you will see more and more of the WHL Jake showing up.
  2. Look around the league at guys with his versatility and who seemingly are going to be 15-25 goals a year and perhaps up to 45-50 points but more than likely be essential elements to a heavy playoff style of hockey. Very few of them come for anything close to those numbers and Canucks are actually blessed in a way that his development curve has been of the slower power forward nature.
  3. If I were Canucks I would lock up Jake with a bridge sooner than later. Big risk leaving it to this summer IMHO.
  4. What? Demko is the best backup goalie in the NHL?
  5. I would never call you Anti Farm. You would be Uncle Farm, not Anti Farm.......having gender identity crises Jimmy?
  6. Some of the hardest shooters I have ever seen were far from the biggest guys. Again, I compare it to a golf swing. Some of the longest hitters in the world are not the world's biggest guys.
  7. Hmmmm, perhaps but his level of "try" seems increased too. Not sure rink size impacts size of your heart.
  8. To continue the Friday humour....that isn't a tortoise, that is Matthew Tkachuk
  9. You had inside information on the process and what the other offers were? You sure keep talking as if you did.
  10. High speed rail is all over Europe. I took two trains today. I am on one right now. Wi-fi, clean and quite inexpensive!
  11. I didn't criticize Trudeau for buying TMX, I criticized him for stopping the project and now dragging it slowly along. I don't really care how it happens, it should up and running right now. I know you don't like Harper but Trudeau had an approved and engineering line in place when he took power - five years later it remains a rumour until it happens. Many ways for farms to split income. Give me a break. And where do you get that I was blaming BC? This an Ottawa thing. The fact that a couple cannot split their income when they run a farm and then again with the kids that help on the farm is ridiculous.
  12. I understand there were multi offers and Vancouver's was not necessarily the best one but was the one that had no $ coming back which was a big incentive for Tampa. There was a competitive process - the price was what it was. The return has been at least equal to the price paid in my mind. If the Canucks had offered less, chances are likely they lose the deal. They would look a lot different without Miller and those picks - and not necessarily better.
  13. Well, as neither of us are managers of the team, I guess we will find out at the same time. I look at their roster and the likely draft order (rough guess) and who will be on each likely protection list and I come to that conclusion. Past experience is noted.
  14. Disagree. Perhaps general consensus with your buddies or your collective brain cells but I was surrounded at the exact time with a lot of "hockey people" and there were mixed opinions but the majority was it was a fair price for an top tier player. No question they were not the only team interested AND the affordable deal and term added to his value and where the other pick came in. They paid market value. No, it wasn't a "steal" and for the sake of the kid who gets drafted with the first pick (this year or next), I hope it works out for Tampa too but it was an evaluated risk and one that at the time many supported, some didn't but to say that most were saying it was too much for a first round pick that was PROVEN at the NHL level - nope.
  15. ...take two modest versus something bigger. There are no absolute rules and given the Canucks will not be a top 5 team worried about losing a "star" or a bottom 5 to 10 team who will find no trouble filling their protection list without fear of loss - they are in decent shape but can sway the process with some clever moves. I expect that to happen.
  16. His versatility (C or Wing), ability to pass, ability to shoot (has a rocket), ability to defend, ability to play on PP, ability to play a power forward game etc. etc. The guy is a stud. He himself was a first round pick. Canucks will be giving up this year or next what will likely be a latter half of first round pick for said first round pick who is playing like one for a commodity that may or may not be as good. So a firm known commodity that is playing lights out for an unknown a few years away. Canucks have a good core NOW and have a good system NOW so it was a calculated risk but not a very big risk given the quality of the player they got in return. Liked this deal the second I heard about it and still like it. Bump into all kinds of people associated with the game who think it was the single best trade this past off season made by any team given the contract included (term and AAV).
  17. It's a shot contest, not a dunk or wrestling contest. Height is overrated for hardness of shot. Like golf - the longest drivers are not always the biggest guys. There is a lot of technique involved.
  18. Ice Tigers......good battles. Nice rink you guys have too.
  19. Lunchtime here - sunny and chilly, going to a local game tonight and meeting up with good friends (former teammates included) and looking forward to some focused complete BS hockey talk, too much food and too much adult liquid.   LIFE IS GOOD!!!!

Yup but that is quite a few  years back now.   Always find August hard as not "training" for a camp still seems weird.    I do miss the "team" stuff for sure.   I don't miss bag skates, stairs, buses, idiots who cannot keep a puck on the ice in warmups or practice, stick technology that has taken every player and turn them into Ovie, wet pads, constant bruises, etc etc.    There, on balance I guess the change hasn't been too bad!

it must be twice as hard to bag skate with goalie skates on? doesn’t sound fair. a fellow, who had played in the boston chain, i coached minor hockey with claims he hated team mates shooting at his head during practises. i guess back then, there were no goalie coaches. he said when he asked wren blair how he wanted him to play, blair said, just stop the puck.

Only good thing about being a goalie is no one expects you to go fast when skating.   To be honest, it isn't that hard skating if it is line drills, it sucks if they are circle drills.   I had one enlightened coach who would get players who head hunted in practice have to stand in net with back turned and we got to use player sticks and aim at their assets from the hash marks.  No wind ups but I had a decent wrist shot.......
