  1. Looking at this trade Who wouldn't not like to do this deal in reverse? We gave up picks, added long term cap for players who still kept us at the bottom They were not the type of players our team needed (at that time or now) (OEL plays the same side as Hughes too) Now we probably have to retain cap or more picks to move both This was a short term gain trade (and even then that failed) and not one for the future that the team needed at the time (not in hindsight as i said that then as well)
  2. I think a GM has to put forward the reason to a owner and make his point, but a GM with integrity will say look i was hired to make these this a better team, it is me who is held responsible Here's Aqua agreeing with what i say At one point, Aquilini said: “Jim makes the hockey decisions. He talks to me all the time and I support him. There’s no shortcuts.” and Benning response to one of his many gaffes Benning admitted, than his phone call to Aquilini last week to tell the owner he’d be paying $6.3 million USD for veteran Sam Gagner to play in the minors the next two seasons. Gagner, signed by Benning as a free agent only 15 months earlier “It was a hard conversation,” Benning said. “I tried to explain to him that we had signed Sam but we felt younger players had outperformed him at camp. I was talking about (Nikolay) Goldobin, mostly. We had to make a hard decision on that, and it was hard to have to call him up and explain it. But at the end of the conversation he understood. That was the hardest call I’ve had to make to him.” Aquilini told Sportsnet: “When they made that decision to put Sam in the minors, when they told me, I wasn’t happy about it. I mean, it’s $3 million (per season). It’s crazy, but that’s what was necessary.” He signed so many overpriced players to long term contracts, that cost us picks to get and get rid of even after recently acquiring them, or they sat on the bench, in the minors, or on someone else's bench while we paid them too
  3. Glad you are not an apologist, but come on OEL wasn't an unknown anymore than LE was (whom Benning being with the same club knew very well) Draft choices are the scouts, but any GM who has seen pro players has more say and knowledge of them (and he failed there and handcuffed the team), finally it looks like they are untangling the mess and better days will soon return
  4. At first glance i was meh too Then realized we didn't trade away Bo on a 3 yr contract at $5.5 We traded Bo with 2 months of contract remaining to us before he was a UFA, for guys that are younger, will be here longer and not signed for $8,5 for 8 yrs We are much better off in every way Plus watching Bo ignore his team mates downed right in front of him, I was done with his leadership
  5. Thanks Deb But what is the Canucks record when you post a GDT (in your match up info) ?
  6. Has it been 2 yrs? I had thought they did that in 1/2 that amount
  7. With remaining games against weaker teams, i can see us getting over 60% of wins and also against divisional teams hurts more for the better draft position
  8. I think so as well, unless you are filling that position moving Garland or Boeser
  9. He should commit to improving his game over the summer, If he wants options of teams (or ours) interested in him, then he better put the work in He hasn't worked to improve any area of his game since being in the NHL BB should be the best he will be by this age, because he worked hard on improving weaker areas (and he hasn't) I think he is what he is, gets a great pay cheque (without getting beat up and keep his teeth without scars )
  10. I agree his timing for trading draft picks and outbidding for lower roster players for long term, while EP and Hughes were young was all wrong He should have retained those picks and start trading some when the opportunity arose to improve where EP and Hughes are now (not then) Now we have lil choice with not being able to bring in those ELC players we would have had, if we had then kept the picks Since then it has been a tangled mess with EP and QH stuck with overpaid, underperforming players that we sat in the box, in the minors, or to play for other teams and on top of giving up drafts to get those overpaid bottom liners, we then doubled down and traded more picks to get rid of them (and sign more of the same). We lost a very good opportunity here to build when these guys were stars at such a young age and hopefully that isn't lost and too late
  11. Not everyone gets math, but you have a 60/60 chance of being correct with your earlier statement
  12. In this perspective it is still a good deal For Less than 2 months of owning Bo, Canucks get Beauvillier, Raty and Hronek Bo wasn't signed We could have let him walk in 2 months for free or we still could have got in bidding war to retain him It was time for Bo to move on and let new players lead this team If we don't get EP some resemblance of improvement good luck signing him We still have our 1st pick and players to move yet before next year This team wasn't very good with the players we had Getting gold at a garage sale is never easy
  13. I know we get upset at JTM lack of leaving the zone, Pavel was such a dynamic player, but rarely went near his own blueline, and waiting for the long bomb pass I doubt Pavel was on for many more goals than he was on for though and JTM is probably close to Pavel like that too It is why the Gretzky, Crosby, Robinson's are everyone else When you control play in the opposition zone more than your own when you score more 5v5 than your opponent does is huge Scoring highlight goals is great entertainment as long as your other shifts don't hurt the team Like if a player could skate all the way through a team and take high risk shots that sometimes ,scores, but sometimes goes off the boards and the other team scores (rather than passing to a open guy in front- I remember Bure guilty of this many times because he always wanted the goal himself, and people calling him a goal hog- that wears thin on teammates after a while) or a defenceman who has a hard shot from the point and sometimes scores, but mostly tries to put it through a forwards shins and gives up a breakaway Scoring goals is always nice, as long as you are positive on the ice and in the room
  14. I just don't see him as a player fully committed to being a better player What has he improved upon since being in the NHL besides his paycheque? He is going through at the easiest commitment to keep his job
  15. Anything is possible, but a sure thing from not doing that trade (that I didn't care for in the long term) is that after putting up with overpaying under performing non superstars big money we would have finally had flex capability and a good draft pick, That trade did not leap frog the Canucks out of the basement and is locking them into making limited moves because of no cap flexibility (He basically traded 3 of his own players he paid big money recently acquiring and extending it another 7 yrs with another underperforming player while losing cap flex and a good draft pick The timing of that trade was all wrong for where the Canucks were at
  16. I disagree Imo Arizona clearly won the deal and are free of ALL cap space from that trade already That trade has still kept the Canucks at the bottom, while handcuffing our cap flexibility ever since and the future PLUS they got a great draft pick player from us We still have to overpay for what we get for OEL (basically resigned LE) We would have to give up draft picks to move OEL now Garland return is only thing that can lighten this trade ever happening, but it won't be enough to even it up even closely
