  1. I think the powerplay will be good, maybe drop slightly with less risk Taken? The only thing for them to keep in mind is to not give up any shorthanded chances – they were 30th in high-danger save percent and save percent on the powerplay. (and where I think they may tighten up some) The P.P. Analytics were good, They were ranked 11th- GF, 6th-best in CF%, 9th-best in xGF%, 7th-best in SCF, and 8th-best in HDCF. If there is anything to pick apart here, it’s that the Canucks should be generating more chances with their puck-possession superiority than what they currently were, but that’s just a nitpick (It's also why I thInk they will be close to last year's numbers and with EP playing for a contract) In all, the Canucks were likely buoyed by their powerplay, sunk by rough goaltending, ineffective 5v5 offence, and a really bad penalty kill, and individual play Vancouver conceded the 8th most goals against of any team this season, .But what might be most surprising is that Tyler Myers and Oliver Ekman-Larsson combined to post 200 GA, making them worse than an entire NHL team.(Boston 174 GA) I feel that they will play more as a team this year and look forward to seeing how much of that will improve them
  2. I recall this being sung for Bonino before Edit Found it
  3. Many great players have played, but none of them have accomplished the points, league domination and all the achievements, awards and retirement tributes and accolades that Gretzky has ( some that I mentioned just above- that It's not even close) He does not need excuses and what ifs to be named the greatest He achieved the accomplishments
  4. Yeah I was still surpised to see only 1 Bruin with over 30 goals though You should build from Goalie out (Not from 3-4th lines capping you out like we built from in past) Record setting Bruins Goals For: 305 (2nd of 32), Goals Against: 177 (1st of 32)
  5. I think it is an honest answer Things can change in 3 years He has committed to Oilers for 7 years already and another 3 years He and his wife will either be happy to stay or excited to live somewhere else by then Way too early to be concerned about this, it it not like he has asked to be traded as any concern
  6. EP was consistently around a point a game player (like Scheifele who's cap space is 7.3% of cap) He had a breakout scoring year as a top 5 scoring centre last year Do you pay him like one now, or based on his more previous years with improvement? I don't think the Canucks will pay as a top 5 centre right away and can see a 4 yr contract signed to prove it as consistent I might see him paid as a top 7-8 paid centre for 4 years (Eichel money around $10m/yr)
  7. Can you imagine if he didn't get off to a great start and got injured, what would you be paying him then to resign (without knowing how his recovery went)? Maybe his agent has made this point and he will still sign (before 20 games played)
  8. I thought players concentrated on hockey, and why they pay an agent to take care of the other stuff ? Really he is just not sure about long or short term and maybe betting on himself to get more When you get the big $ your opportunity to be traded to a winning team lessens somewhat (Unless you get a Tkachuk deal, swapping another high player) Hopefully it all works out what's best for EP and the team in the end
  9. Which if those teams get a favourable schedule will help as well with a slight edge in their favour
  10. Funny for a "non goal scorer", at age 10, Gretzky had scored an astonishing 378 goals and 139 assists and 517 pts in just 81 games with the Brantford Nadrofsky Steelers and "how" he met Howe "Nobody could touch Gretzky when he had the puck" He was like the old magnetic tabletop hockey games but he was the only magnetized player, I remember watching his many times just stickhandle and weave out of 3-4 players rushing him and score, or set up the open man, he was very generous with his time and commitment to hockey with interviews and representing Canada in every tournament despite playing late into the season with long playoffs and never had an excuse to back out from representing Canada like other would (and do today) In 1978 When he entered the league in 1979, critics opined that Gretzky was "too small, too wiry, and too slow to be a force in the [NHL]." His weight was 160 pounds (73 kg), compared to the NHL average of 189 pounds (86 kg) at that time. But that year, Gretzky tied for first place in scoring, He consistently scored last in strength tests among the Edmonton Oilers, bench pressing only 140 pounds (64 kg) Despite his lack of strength, Gretzky had remarkable physical stamina. Like his hero, Gordie Howe, Gretzky possessed "an exceptional capacity to renew his energy resources quickly." In 1980, when an exercise physiologist tested the recuperative abilities of all of the Edmonton Oilers, Gretzky scored so high that the tester said he "thought the machine had broken." Gretzky was named an officer of the Order of Canada on June 25, 1984, for outstanding contribution to the sport of hockey. Since the Order ceremonies are always held during the hockey season, it took 13 years and 7 months—and two Governors General—before he could accept the honour. He was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada in 2009 "for his continued contributions to the world of hockey, notably as one of the best players of all time, as well as for his social engagement as a philanthropist, volunteer and role model for countless young people" In June 1985, as part of a package of five rule changes to be implemented for the 1985–86 season, the NHL Board of Governors decided to introduce offsetting penalties, where neither team lost a man when coincidental penalties were called. The effect of calling offsetting penalties was felt immediately in the NHL, because during the early 1980s, when the Gretzky-era Oilers entered a four-on-four or three-on-three situation with an opponent, they frequently used the space on the ice to score one or more goals. The rule change became known as "the Gretzky rule." Gretzky discouraged unfair hits as a deterrent. "If a guy ran him, Wayne would embarrass that guy", said former Oiler Lee Fogolin. "He'd score six or seven points on him. I saw him do it night after night." In 1990, the Associated Press named Gretzky Male Athlete of the Decade and In his post-championship interview, Messier (who had replaced Gretzky as Edmonton's captain following the trade) paid tribute to his former teammate by dedicating the Oilers' Cup win to him.as the reason they became the players they did In 1997, prior to his retirement, The Hockey News named a committee of 50 hockey experts (former NHL players, past and present writers, broadcasters, coaches and hockey executives) to select and rank the 50 greatest players in NHL history. The experts voted Gretzky number one. Gretzky said he would have voted Bobby Orr or Gordie Howe as the best of all time.(Humble to the end_ In 1999 as the season wound down, there was media speculation that Gretzky would retire, but he refused to announce his retirement. His last NHL game in Canada was on April 15, 1999, a 2–2 tie with the Ottawa Senators and the Rangers' second-to-last game of the season. Following the contest, in a departure from the usual three stars announcement, Gretzky was awarded all three stars. Upon returning to New York, Gretzky announced he would retire after the Rangers' last game of the season. The final game of Gretzky's career was a 2–1 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on April 18, 1999, in Madison Square Garden. Although the game involved two American teams, both national anthems were played, with the lyrics slightly adjusted to accommodate Gretzky's departure. In place of the lyrics "O Canada, we stand on guard for thee", Bryan Adams ad-libbed, "We're going to miss you, Wayne Gretzky". "The Star-Spangled Banner", as sung by John Amirante, was altered to include the words "in the land of Wayne Gretzky". Gretzky ended his career with a final point, assisting on the lone New York goal scored by Brian Leetch. At the time of his retirement, Gretzky was the second-to-last WHA player still active in professional hockey. Mark Messier, who attended the game along with other representatives of the Edmonton Oilers' dynasty, was the last. Gretzky was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 22, 1999, becoming the tenth player to bypass the three-year waiting period. The Hall of Fame then announced that he would be the last player to do so. He was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2000. In addition, Gretzky's jersey number 99 was retired league-wide at the 2000 NHL All-Star Game After his retirement in 1999, Gretzky was immediately inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, making him the most recent player to have the waiting period waived. The NHL retired his jersey number 99 league-wide (The only player EVER). Gretzky was one of six players voted to the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) Centennial All-Star Team. He was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2000, and received the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2012. In May 2021, one of his 1979 O-Pee-Chee hockey cards sold for $3.75 million in a private sale Wayne doesn't need excuses of "if only" to make him the GOAT He accomplished all his feats without excuses, while dominating and outscoring his peers and teammates like no other and was extremely modest while doing so, and just as when he was playing against kids older than him as a child that were physically bigger and stronger, they never caught up to him when they were all in adulthood either
  11. How many of the Greatest players have had their numbers retired by the NHL, not just their teams?
  12. Gretzky was playing against 10 yr olds when 6 and was always against bigger older physically stronger kids his whole life and dominated them
  13. When you dominate statistically over your peers and teammates that stands out to me, No one did it like Greatzky, obviously other players are great too but not dominating statiscally over their peers and teammates like 99 did Using injuries, etc and stuff is hearsay (They also could have naturally declined or ? using hearsay as well) Actually achieving it is the ultimate ! It is like saying the 1994/ 2011 Canucks were the greatest Stanley Cup champs ever
  14. He is a 28 yr old 185ib with 4 NHL games, I don't know anything about him, but I am wondering why bother trading for him when we probably have the same but younger needing a chance to prove themselves?
  15. Yeah on a guy , who draws shots to the head from opposing players
  16. Yeah I agree but I am not sure on different era players to different era players are better over each other I think how they dominate over their peers in one era over how a player dominated over his peers in another era is a better stick of reference Like in the McDavid you mention as example, is he better than Gretzky because he is faster with better equipment and training, does he make his teammates better players, does he dominate over his peers more than Gretzky? Man Sports and Players get better evolving and can do more eventually, Gretzky got motivated watching Howe. ,McDavid watching Gretzky? One can make countless comparisons with many arguments, especially inserting one into another era, How much more % were they better than their peers in the same eras I think stands up best? (As they all face the same issues of the same era)
  17. One of my pet peeves of BB was always skating away when Petey or someone got nailed, then look away and skate as if he didn't see it and acting like every NHL game is the 2018 All Star game and chummy and laughing with opponents like you stated (like I am your buddy so don't hit me), he needs to play with more desire, he said he hated and resented hockey (and it showed in his play) I don't wanna see him pull a Jake and just talk the talk (remembering how he wanted to make people hate to play against him), especially after Identifying it yourself. I have a feeling he may come back an improved player (let's hope it is Very noticeable)
  18. After 295 pages, did you open this up expecting to fine NEW info? Hmm, Maybe your wife keeps bringing things up because you forget or give her the opportunity ? (like you extnded this thread)?
  19. Allvin was a scout for 19 years and knows the work that they put into it, he sets a vision with all his staff and trusts that each of them work together to achieve success together. It appears to be more collaboration than dictatorship with accountability and input from everyone, instead of being kept in the dark as Smyl said of the past regime
  20. I read somewhat different For the Canucks’ amateur scouting department, preparing for the NHL Draft is a year-round process. Each new regime sets their own agenda: *President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford and General Manager Patrik Allvin set the vision for the club *The scouting and analytics departments analyze and evaluate based on that vision *Assistant General Manager Cammi Granato and Director of Amateur Scouting Todd Harvey collaborate with the departments, consolidate the information, and make recommendations to management. *Granato oversees the scouting department and creates a handbook that aligns with the vision and philosophy of the management group. It includes core characteristics the club looks for in a player and a rating standard for various skills. Harvey is also responsible for scouting and selecting players in the first three rounds. Assistant General Manager Derek Clancey, Wyatt Smith in the crossover role, and Bobbie Haglin, support the evaluation of rounds one through three, while also assessing rounds four through seven with the rest of the scouting staff.
  21. I agree with you and the new management thought process “It’s easy to go in and watch a couple of games and have an opinion [on a player]. That doesn’t mean that’s the right opinion about the player, so that’s why I need to challenge my staff. Every decision that’s going to be made here, it’s based again on the process leading up to the decision. We want to hold our scouts and staff members accountable.” “The first thing with Jim [Rutherford] is that I’ve been impressed with how open-minded he is,” added Alvin. “He wants to strive for success, he’s never satisfied, and I think that’s contagious for every single one of us working underneath. He really trusts and empowers staff, and he doesn’t just want people who agree with him, and neither do I. There are going to be some big discussions and arguments, and at the end of the day, we’re going to do what’s best for the Vancouver Canucks now and in the future.” Ultimately, Harvey makes the final decision amongst the scouts during debates, which is then presented to management and ownership to make the decision for the NHL Draft. Given Allvin’s 19-year history as a scout, between the Montreal Canadiens and the Pittsburgh Penguins, he understands the hours poured into finding players and he trusts his team. “I have a lot of respect for them. I know how hard they work and the pride they take to make this right,” Allvin said. “[The Draft] is a graduation for the scouts, it’s a game seven. The excitement for them coming into Nashville, it’s well deserved, and I want to make sure they enjoy the time there as well. They definitely have done a great job since I’ve got in here.”
  22. Yeah for winning Leagues Art Ross, Hart, leading league assists,1st team all stars, HHOF, Ironmen (reliable) the Sedins were good value
  23. Back around when the Canucks were League President winners, didn't the Sedins,Kesler,Burrows etc all sign under $6 million while a guy like Gomez made $8 million? I agree with your take on EP (but maybe he will only want a 4-5 yr contract to keep his option open though, and risk he has no injuries)? At the same time, giving up a guaranteed $30 million (for 3 more years) is hard to pass on at a young age (when is enough enough)? But then again counting what he has made so far, and if signing $50 for 5 yrs (as an example) he won't be living in a tent homeless and could afford to take a chance to keep that option out, (if he no longer likes what he sees) and even an option to make more in those 3 yrs with cap increases over the years
  24. Defence was a Canuck killer and in only 1 year, we only have Hughes (maybe Meyers) from the starting lineup last year He probably understands it will take time to unravel the mess they are in, but sees the more positive changes taking place
