Kevin Bieksa Calls On Canucks Fans To Be Louder

Kinda gotta agree with this. I hate when people talk like there is any sort of onus on the fans. frack that! Nowadays you can only get a decent seat for $100! Just a decent seat for $100. Sometimes I believe these multi-millionaire athletes take things like high ticket prices for granted because they've got so much money. For me personally, I'm the quiet type. Nevermind that, I'm really into the hockey so I'm generally part of the quieter folk that likes to focus on the game just as I would from my couch at home. I guess that makes me a bad fan. The way I see it, if I'm going to shell out $100+ for a seat, I'm going to be as loud or quiet as I damn well want. The players should be playing to earn their paychecks regardless of how much noise the crowd makes.

I want to emphasize that this doesn't mean I don't think the crowd should be louder. Of course it would be great if we outcheered the opposing team's fans. I just don't want people, especially the players, talking like there is some sort of onus on the fans. We're not the ones making millions to play a game.

How bout he shuts up and worry about playing hockey. I like Bieksa most of the time but sometimes he just talks too much. I agree it is a corporate crowd but it is loud for the most part if the team is giving us something to cheer about . They've been playing like crap giving a half ass effort and they want us to be excited about that? Come on, focus on your own game

eff beiksa. maybe if you gus start scoring the crowd will cheer for you. no point cheering for a bad effort by the nucks.. and obv winnipeg is louder. their arena is tiny and traps the sound. plus they havent had hockey for 16 years so of course they will be loud about that.

It's so strange that people would take his comments so negatively. All he is trying to say is that fan cheering helps. Everybody wants the same things...if you can be loud and boisterous you will help our game. I don't get why people are becoming so defensive about this....

I like Bieksa for the most part but this quote bothers me: Bieksa, for his part, acknowledges all these things but he also made an appeal to the faithful. “A lot time when you’re down in the game or you’re going through a lull in the second period, the crowd can give the team a boost. We’ve got to be working together here. We both want the same thing which is the Stanley Cup. So we’ll work for you if you work for us.” I'm sorry but it is not the crowd's responsibility to motivate the team and players. Sure its a nice bonus if it happens but I'm sorry Kevin you should be working for us regardless of wether or not we are working for you.

granted there are many true fans at every game, but the majority of attendees probably couldn't provide a definition of 'fan', much less try to be a good one.

true fans cheer their team on, whatever the score, no matter the outcome.

at rogers arena (and it sounds like on this thread too) there are waaay too many self-centred, spoiled brat, little sugar-britches, sitting back saying - "Okay, C'mon!!! I'm here!! IMPRESS ME!!!" - not even close to being fans.

and as if it's not bad enough having your neighbor ask you to "quiet down", (btw, insane, we're at a hockey game fcol), the hare-brained staff will sometimes join in and threaten to remove you for cheering too loudly(!). What kind of effed-up crap is that?

To those getting their knickers in a twist over what B said....I'm sure he didn't mean stand up and clap for mediocre play. He meant get an encouraging cheer going to liven the place up during the lulls - they'll feed off the energy.

The attitude of entitlement in here is kind of discouraging - the team's asking for our help, not for us to salute them. I see nothing wrong with that in a 7th man way. Sure, we pay big $ blah, blah, blah - even more reason to make the most of it and pretend you're at a hockey game instead of a coffee house crib game.

I agree that glares and awkwardness accompany this type of random cheering...my cowbell gets shot down a lot. But I try to be friendly in my enthusiasm so those around me join in vs wanting to strangle me. I try to befriend them in the process vs it being a standoff and "in your face". Last game, it was an older, rather distinguished Asian fellow and by the end of the game I had him high fiving with me. He started off very reserved but, with some encouraging, came out of his shell. It's all about how you do it.

Besides, when Juice tells you to cheer, you do it. Milk hot dogs.

I'm starting to think the music played at the games is part of the reason why it can be quiet.

Just listen to the music tonight...most of it just isn't conducive to cheering and clapping. Fans are just sitting there on there hands. Why not play the classic hockey organ music? It at least gets people clapping.

And at the risk of offending those who love our goal song, to me it's just not celebratory enough or the type of song that gets everyone to sing along when they're standing and cheering the goal. I still love the Ole song we used to play a few years back. That got 18,000 fans singing and celebrating together.

All I know is if I paid a decent amount of hard earned money to see a game live I wouldn't waste the opportunity by screaming out loud "go canucks go" for any length of time. I'd much rather pay attention to the game and cheer when theres a goal, big hit or fight...not cheer mindlessly throughout the whole game, and personally I would also be annoyed by people doing this nearby. And I'm sorry if you are a pro athelete making millions crowd volume level should have zero impact on how you are playing, and if u say it does you need to question your choice of profession.

Does everyone want a simple solution to the problem? Manage to convince the Canucks organization to lower the price of tickets, that way we won't only have the business prudes in the lower bowl. You'll notice if you've been to both sections that the upper bowl is way more fun to be in than the lower bowl. This is because of the price of the tickets.

But a simple solution is different from a realistic solution... so I don't know what to do lol.
