You know, I'm actually pretty sick of this argument.

If we didn't lose because of it, it does not need addressing. That is a "do the bare minimum to improve this team" attitude, and it blows.

The fact is, there are several areas in which this team could improve. I happen to believe that adding a real fighter is one of those things. Yes, it would be ideal if we could load the team with playmaking types who can score 30-40 goals who have lightning speed, who hit hard, have great hockey smarts, who go to the front of the net, blah blah blah, but those guys are very rare. The workaround is to find different types of players to fill a role and whos skillsets compliment one another. You can't have 12 sedins and 9 hamhuises. It's not possible.

Get a tough guy. Maybe not a useless-in-every-other-way tough guy, but a guy who is genuinely tough and can mash some faces. If that guy isn't available, find a goon. It's a tool in a toolbox. Sure, you don't use ytour seldgehammer to drive screws, but it comes in real handy when you need to smash something into pieces, and from time to time, you do need to do that.

hey Curmudg, who'se side are you on?

Oreskovich was traded for Bernier-- Oreo sent back to waist a Canuck contract spot in the minors while Brenier is in the Semifinals.

O'Brien traded for Parent also stinking up the minors

Hordichuk traded for Peters who never came out of the minors and retired

Torres was sent packing for nothing, but his team could use him right now in the Semifinals

Desbien never had any hockey fans fooled as to his NHL ability, except you know, Gillis.

Don't forget Rypien, not re-signed.

Pyatt also playing in the Semifinals

Just cuz Mikey has you believing he is "Leading " the Canucks, and the NHL up the "Higher path" ...

we don't need an all out enforcer like a john scott or boogaard, we need a guy like Chris Neil or someone similar who has no problem stepping up and dropping the gloves but can also put the puck in the net at times.

Desbiens is pretty tough and has some skill. Lacks food speed though. Here he is going with some legit fighters. I would put him in the light heavyweight class with guys like Boll.

Pinnizotto can also chuck them, not really an enforcer though. Here he gets the clear cut decision against Rinaldo. Rinaldo fights a lot but doesn't win most of his fights but at the very least he knows what he's doing. Feisty light weight.

Guillaume Desbiens seemed unwilling to fight during his first tour of duty with the Canucks. He was much more willing during his call-up last year with the Calgary Flames.

If he's willing and holds his own like his time with the Flames, he will be in the NHL with the Canucks in the upcoming season.

The whole toughness issue is overrated IMO. Most of the Canucks are big guys, they can handle themselves. Also Kassian, Volpatti, Desbiens, and Pinnizzotto all are legit fighters but didn't play a full season with the Canucks last year, they will be more available this year. But the Canucks still finished 12th in fighting majors, which isn't amazing, but isn't soft either. I hate how whenever there's a chippy game, people keep saying the Canucks got "pushed around", even if both teams were into it. Games get a little rough sometimes, it's part of hockey, and it happens with every team.

Team toughness takes care of needing a goon. The Canucks simply haven't had that team toughness in the past but are building towards it rapidly. I know why people think we need a goon, because this team has simply not been tough enough when it counts. That is changing. Gillis is drafting big strong tough players. Things just don't happen over night. Patience people.
