RUPERTKBD
Maybe players can also see the way the league treats Vancouver. Maybe they don't like the coach. Maybe they don't like the travel Van has to do. Maybe they think the management is weak. Maybe they are afraid of the fans, although sometimes its pretty quiet during games. The management still not retiring Bure's 10 one of the greatest palyers to ever play the game, might turn a UFA off.

Sergei Shirokov
The reason is that big name players want to sign for exciting teams. Face it, Vancouver isn't really that exciting of a team. Our captains are incredibly mature, which can be cool, but for a young superstar they are likely looking to have a little fun where they are. Our coach is probably one of the must impersonal coaches in the league. Our GM doesn't really take the risks like exciting contenders will. He likes to stick with the status quo. We have a couple very embarrassing players like Lapierre and kesler. Gillis needs to build an EXCITING team and do away with this Detroit model. It used to work, but it's a dying model in this era of hockey.

TheWheeler
Exciting? The Canucks are one of the very few hockey teams to play an up-tempo, offense first style. You want exciting as in Minnesota Wild or New Jersey Devils? What a bunch of bullocks. Detroits won 4 stanley cups, (5 SCF appearances), and has never missed the playoffs in like 20 years. The new trend is heading into the dead puck era. I don't want a team full of party animals. We are one seaon of a SCF final appearance, and 2 consecutive presidents trophy. This team going into next season will probably be the best team to date the franchise has ever known. Some people never stop whining.
scottyP.
big name players usually don't go on the FA market. If they do, they have to choose 1 out of 30 teams. Some simple logic would do you good op.
EvoX
Because Canucks is a well balance team and we do not have major/serious issue in any position that MG needs to go desperate and throw out 100+ million to fill the void. It is more like Canucks doesn't need to sign top big name UFA because we have a good team here. Canucks has big name top players in first line, 2nd line, on defense and #1 goalie + decent backup. Yes, Suter , Weber >> Hamhuis, Edler, Bieksa, but Canucks D would be much better with addition of Garrison than 1 Suter + 5 no name or 1 weber + some average D Hamhuis Juice Edler Garrison Ballard Tanev / Albert VS Suter Gilbert Falk Scandella Prosser Genoway Spurgeon Flyer is desperate to fill the void of Pronger + Carle, they were deseprate to fill the #1 goalie and got Brzy for that crazy contract So. we don't need to sign big name FA, we need to sign FA that would help the team
Dynamic Innovator
+1 to EvoX. The team isn't desperate for any particular position and therefore doesn't throw crazy offers around. (Sundin excepted...) Some other random reasons not to sign here, in no particular order: Canadian tax structure Cost of living Weather Lack of privacy Travel schedule
Sergei Shirokov
That "up-tempo, offense style first" system went down the drain at the deadline when AV talked Gillis into turning the team into a "low-tempo, defense style first". You can claim all you want about Detroits past success, but it's obvious now they are fighting an uphill battle now. I don't even put Detroit in the same category as Pittsburgh or Philly or LA these days. It's a new era of hockey, and Vancouver is doing a brutal job at adapting to it. Don't care about President's Trophies. Means jack all. The fact that this is the best team we've had in years more speaks for the history of the team. You look at this team in 2-3 years, and I bet it is going to be an EXTREMELY bleak future. Sedin's older, Kesler probably disabled, our average D-core older and more average... We don't have the young, star talent, that alot of teams have and that is really going to bite us. Sorry I don't look at things as positively as you do. Mighty Walrus
Nothing changed. That's the problem. Now the change the Canucks are facing is the loss of their #1 goaltender. Wonderful work. I would like to thank the media and it's stupid fan base who repeat garbage after eating it without question. Thank you all for embarking this team on a fifteen year downward spiral before a possible return to the Stanley cup final. Thank you.

TheWheeler
We're talking about exciting hockey, not about success. Those are two very different things. And you know what...NJ, PHX, and STL all played a defensive style. Did any of them have more success than Vancouver against LA? The fact of the matter is. Vancouver simply ran into a very formidabble opponent. They were hot, we were not. Our best player was out. Detroit's fighting an uphill battle because their core is simply getting too old. They lost Rafalski recently which was a big loss. They lost Lidstrom and now Stuart. Its not a matter of philospohy. Its a matter of age. People keep saying the president's trophy doesnt mean anything, but forget how hard the trophy is to actually win. Its a significant accomplishment, and only good teams win the president's trophy. Its hard enough getting wins in this league as it is.
