Cam Barker: First Impressions?

Yeah no kidding lol, people were kinda dogging him after the first game and I thought he played real well in it. Now it's the opposite.. that was one of the worst beat a dman wide I've seen in a while. He also failed to get the puck out once too that stuck out to me and it resulted in a pretty good scoring chance. I really didnt like him last night. He had a real good first game though.

I know this sounds stupid but it kinda sucks were so stacked back there. I'd really like to see if we could make an impact player out of him. What he was projected to be is most likely out of the question but with some hard work and solid grasp on how to play our system, he could get real close to it... Just look what we've done with Higgins

His foot speed will always be an issue though, Higgins doesn't have that limitation. It's one thing to anticipate on offence and get into a good position so that you can do well there, but it's another to have to react on the fly defensively. It's less of an issue around the net if he's smart, but we see the results when it's open ice.

I should be clear, I expected less out of Barker to this point, and it's nice to see him have some impact coming in after sitting in the press box for so long. Perhaps we could improve, but he might be a good specialist for the PP to fill in for injuries that we otherwise wouldn't get at that price point.

I still stand by Edler's production bringing worth to our team despite his defensive mistakes. He's still a positive possession player, which is what made LA so good last year. Barker does the same possession-wise, but against much lesser competition, so he's been able to step in but I wouldn't put him at the same level as Edler, certainly not above.

I can't take all the credit for noticing his foot speed, it was brought up again and again by the Oiler and Wild bloggers when they had him on their team. He's received some pretty scathing reviews, but the issues with his game really are issues.

Cam is looking hungry , he has a real chance at turning it around. good for him.

skills are there, making good passes, pretty good with the puck and seems to hit the net more than any other defenseman. glad to see him working hard. its all about who wants to work harder, thats all it boils down to.

What the fffffffff is going on with Alex Edler ? since he stank out the playoffs last years he's been playing like a guy that should be on a 2way.

Best d-man the last 2 games he's played. Not saying much, but you can tell his puck skills are well above most of our D. We knew we'd be getting that, defensively he's been a pleasant surprise so far. Like to see him get a look on the PP.

An offensive defenceman that can't move the puck and can't play defence. Doesn't seem worth $5 million to me.

I realize that players strengths lie in different areas and sometimes offensive players are not the best defenders. It just bugs me when they are that bad. It's not like the concept of defending is that hard to learn. Lazy, and unmotivated, that's what I call that.
