NEW YORK POST/NEWSDAY/NORTHJERSEY.COM: Rangers assistant GM Steve Gorten spoke yesterday on the club’s efforts to re-sign RFA Derek Stepan this summer without going over the $64.3 million salary cap. The Rangers currently have around $3 million in cap space, and Stepan (the club’s leading scorer last season) is due a substantial raise over the $875K he earned last season. Gorton remains confident they’ll get Stepan under contract by training camp, and also said there’s no timetable to re-sign superstar goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who is slated to become a UFA next summer.

It's actually pretty tough because they don't have too many overpaid players.

Derek Dorsett would be my guess, he makes 1.633M

1.663M+2.181=3.844 free. If Stepan signs for 3.5, this would work.

Stepan- 7.00M for 2 years=3.50M/year.

Brian Boyle is another option and would free up about the same amount of cap.

They'll be fine.

Assuming they want to carry 13 forwards, 8 D-men and 2 goalies:

2 goalies already signed, 8 D-men already signed (and they know which 6 will start), and 9 bottom-6 forwards who make between 1 and 1.7M each. Out of these, they'll probably drop two (waive, trade, send down, whatever) and keep one as the 13th forward.

That'll give them another 2.3-2.8~ on top of the 2.1 they already have. It'll be close, but they'll get it done. Stepan's agent probably wants 5 minimum based on the Bozak and Zajac contracts, though.

Bryan Little signed at 4.7 per season

Sam Gagner signed at 4.8 per season

Me guess is that Derek Stepan will sign at around the same price and the Rangers won't need to make any significant changes in order to fit him under the cap.
