[Report] Gretzky as vp or director of hockey ops? Gillis, Regier, Feaster among candidates for Washington Capitals GM

Lol at the Gillis hate. Guy made got the value of this club to skyrocket. Took us to the finals. Signed most our guys before the finals to bargain deals. His last 2-3 years were terrible but he did draft a ton better.

I see Gillis as a GM who started well but make mistakes. Instead of cutting his losses and licking his wounds, he tried to fix those mistakes but ended up compounding those issues. This slow process becomes his undoing. Like a guy who gets cut and ignores it, he eventually has 100 cuts and is bleeding to death.

The demise of Gillis starts when he makes Luongo captain but to me the 2011 finals was the point where the crash starts in earnest.

He was already dealing with the loss of Torres, Erhoff , Manny, and a boneheaded Ballard situation. He had mortgaged the 2010 draft and a high end asset for a guy who was simply did not fit in . His 2008 pick was now a 2009 pick who was further behind in development than Hodgson was. His 2009 pick was an undersized headcase. Of course he had no 2010 pick and a very late 2011 pick.

In spite of all this he still had it mostly under control . The team was an elite group which made the owner and the fanbase happy. That all came crashing down when the Canucks lost in the first round to the Kings and AV had chosen to promote Cory Schneider as his goto guy.

The team was not expected to fail. His core players fell flat on their faces and he has no prospects to come in behind them. Now the goalie he signed to a ridiculous contract was pissed off and wanted a trade. Gillis was no longer able to keep it together. His little cuts had ripped open into a gaping wound.

He catches a break with Cory Schneider. Cory signs a good contract without an NTC to avoid becoming an RFA which gives Gillis options. Unfortunately, Gillis overestimates Luongo's worth, refusing to admit his contract was hindering his value. When the new CBA is signed, Luongo is virtually worthless in trade and the team comes to training camp with $10mil spent on goaltending for which Gillis is universally mocked for in hockey circles. In spite of the good chemistry between the two goalies, the constant media hype surrounding the controversy did not help the teams image.

His refusal to cut his losses now are taking its toll on the franchise. Gillis' problems are now piled up one by one and he is dragging them around in his head like a sack of bricks. To make matters even worse, next year the team does not recover. They get swept in the first round, proving to his fanbase that there is a serious problem with the talent level .

By the draft Gillis has an aging team that cant win a playoff game . He has two high profile goalies nagging at him and a bare cupboard of prospects to replenish his sagging core. His fan base is pissed off and they want answers. He has run out of time.

Now he was forced into drastic action. He trades his young goalie for a high prospect to kill two birds with one stone. Stock up on high end talent while appeasing Luongo. However,he wastes this opportunity by settling for less than Schneider could have returned. Gillis then compounds his folly by passing over an unusually talented Nichushkin to take a guy ranked anywhere from 10 to 15th.

Since the cap had gone down and trades were scarce, he tries to improve the team by signing moneyball players. He fires his coach and hires a very high profile but controversial entity to come transform them back into contenders.

While Santorelli Stanton and Richardson are good value journeymen, the hail mary attempts to save his team backfire . He gives the twins huge contracts they no longer deserve and then they promptly get injured. Kesler is stripped of his A . His new coach was touted as a changed man but then gets himself suspended in the most embarrassing way. Edler catches the brunt of most of it and has his worst year as a pro, hindering his trade value. Eddie Lack plays so well that an exasperated Luongo finds himself in the exact same situation as he was a year prior.

Gillis finally waives the white flag and gets back to basics.......something he should have done two years earlier. He tries to find undervalued junior prospects to make up for lost time. He finally grants Luongo his wish and actually gets a pretty good return for an aging goalie with an albatross contract.

When the Canucks finally collapse Gillis sees a chance to fix his organizational issues by trading Kesler to get back some desperately need young assets. However, right when Gillis needs to catch a break, his boss of all people comes in and squashes his attempts to trade him. Now he has lost the confidence of ownership

He had bled to death.

Maybe wait for Jensen, Horvat, Shink, Cassels, Gaunce, Subban, Corrado get a couple of years in the pros before you run your tripe.

People were saying Gillis' picks were better . We just gave examples of how Nonis' picks were actually the reason Gillis got to the cup finals. Hell most of Nonis moves helped make this team. I've posted all his notable moves in an earlier post. Most were/are considered the core of that team.

Gillis is grossly overrated. Horvat was one of the few good things he contributed and that trade has a lot of people mad still. I don't count Erhoff cause he was here for what, 2 seasons? Higgins was a good trade and a good deal in my books. Santo was a pretty good move but he was realistically a depth/Utica move. Everything else is too soon to tell.

Wrap your head around this one Merci: Bernier was a buyout after us, Grabner was a waiver wire pickup after us, and the 1st hasn't amounted to much so far apart from 34 NHL games. That's as comparable to Schroeder (drafted the year prior) and Jensen (drafted the year after). According to you: "Literally not one playrr an nhl regular besides hodgson" so Howden must fall into the same disappointing category.

Did you really just try and give Nonis indirect credit for getting Ehrhoff?

You said it, but I'm not sure you understood it.

In a similar way to how AV is doing well with the Rangers.

Some people want to only pick out the bad but aren't willing to recognize anything good. Too bad they're the most vocal.

But on topic, Gillis would be a fine GM in Washington, Regier to a point as well. Feaster would be a terrible pick as GM again though, and I'm not sure Gretzky would sign on, but maybe.

What does it matter of what happened to bernier grabner? Grabner was pretty much a superior to successor to raymond and that 1st is better than nothing.

Gillis grossly overpayed for a buyout. Those pieces could have been used to snag Ott or or how about moving 6 or 7 spots upin the draft packagain all 3.

Gillis is terrible

Not sure how gillis can even be considered for another job. If you really look into his decisons he is not capable of managing a team.

You never know, maybe he'll learn from his mistakes. It was his first GM job to be fair.

However if he did continue to be a rigid stick in the mud it might be fun to see him screwing up some other team.
