Honky Cat
I'm a big Canucks fan. But if the Canucks are contenders by 2020, what does that mean for other Western teams with far better assets than the Canucks, are they not contenders? - Flames - Oilers - Predators - Jets - Avs All of these teams, like it or not, have youth right now (and more in the pipeline) that are far better than the Canucks. Whether we want to admit it or not, all the above Western teams, in 5 years, are setup for success far more than the Canucks are. A lot can happen in 5 years..for all we know, the Canucks could draft a franchise defining player in the next few years, who would be eligible to be in the lineup by 2020...Assets bust,or are squandered (look at the Oilers,CBJ,Islanders for the last 5 years),.... and reversals of fortune can occur at any time.....For all we know,Arizona Coyotes could be SC contenders by then. Diakonos
Holy smokes I laughed at mediocracy. Not at the OP, mind you, but because etymologically "rule by the middle" sounds about a perfect way to describe Benning's tenure so far: some good, some bad, mostly mediocre. Mathew Barzal
Best case scenario, we've freshly drafted a number one center and number one dman and prime to explode out of the rebuild phase. Worst case scenario, we lose the Sedins and it becomes plain as day we have no first line calibre players. Enter rebuild phase.

Bruce Boudreau
Tons could happen guys could get injured off ice issues, whatever it is, something could happen in that huge amount of time. In sports change happens a ton year to year just like in business the market is fluid and very volatile and difficult to predict the trends. You can have a 5 year plan and project in the best case scenario what the team will look like but you have to be able to adapt year to year on your plan depending on how players progress and adjust to your competition as well. Can't predict which players will be drafted, become available to sign, or on the table in a trade either. No players stay the same they are either getting incrementally better each year or getting slowly worse by stagnating and not developing at the appropriate rate. Most of the time guys don't really develop too much if they haven't shown anything overly encouraging by 25 so it is a safe bet in 5 years to know if most of the current prospects in the Canucks system will have legit NHL futures or not since they will be 23 minimum by then. IBatch
Luongo comes back in 2019 to play out the rest of his contract with Vancouver, posts 8 consecutive shutouts to win the starter role...two months later Schneider is traded back to the Canucks and the two together win the Jennings award, and Luongo wins his first Vezina.
