Puck-rakers: #CBJ sign D David Savard to 5-year, $21.25 million contract extension http://bluejacketsxtra.dispatch.com/content/blogs/puck-rakers/2015/09/savard-signs-5-year-extension.html

The Blue Jackets have signed defenseman David Savard to a five-year, $21.25 million contract extension, a deal that begins next season and runs through 2020-21.

Savard, who turns 25 next month, was second in scoring among Blue Jackets' defensemen last season, setting career highs in goals (11), assists (25), points (36), shots on goal (112) and time on ice (22:56 per game).

The new deal will carry a salary cap hit (average annual value) of $4.25 million. Savard will make $1.3 million this season in the final year of a contract he signed last summer. He would have been a restricted free agent next summer.

Savard joins forwards Brandon Saad, Brandon Dubinsky and Nick Foligno as players signed through 2020-21.

More to follow.

Seems every young player goes from a $1.5m deal to a $4m+ deal. Savard is worth it, but compare this deal to others and the GMs are causing each other major difficulties in the coming years.

They are not much the same really?

Tanev is much better defensively!

Savard is near 35 lbs bigger than Tanev, has a big shot, plays the PP, can even be its QB and puts up points handling the puck...

Their play styles are not similar at all. Perhaps he means in terms of their value to their respective teams.
