Not really. spreading talent on each line allows you to roll 4 lines more effectively (less fatigue). To make it into the NHL you have to be a good player. Its about balance

i agree with your line of thinking. i'm sure TG will find the right match ups. it usually is, that the line that is playing the best, plays the most. not sure i like 2 LD's hutton and delzotto as a duo.

it will make it easier when quinn and juolevi arrive. adam beich says, most hockey people place juolevi as a top 4 defenseman and quinn as a top 2 D man.

having a scorer, playmaker and energy guy on each line, i like. looks likes green likes a straight shut down line.

Joe.... Out of curiosity; where do you see Roussel fitting in to the mix once he is back playing?

Based on what we have at the moment and the expected return of Roussel. I would expect the optimal line up as:

Louis Eriksson – Elia Pettersson – Nikolay Goldobin

NOTE: As tempting as it is to play Boeser with Pettersson, i wouldn't for the simple fact that Goldy & Pettersson read well off each other and the element of a crash the net forward is what the line needs. Loui though not what he was several years ago is the closest to that.

Sven Baertschi /Virtanen – Bo Hovart – Antoine Roussel

NOTE: Horvat has always been "Kesler like" in terms of not distributing the puck well and taking it on himself to do everything. His tendency at least 80% of the time is to try the in & out drag move while bulling himself to the net. I like Horvat but he is just not a fit long term for Boeser.

His line requires linemates with blue collar worker like attribute (Antoine Roussel). Optimally Baerstschi complements Bo with his playmaking ability and the fact they read off each other well. Virtanen can sub for Baertschi at times turning the line into a pure crash & bang playoff like line.

Sven Baertschi/Virtanen – Markus Granlund – Brock Boeser

NOTE: Boeser is a shooter and needs a pass first playmaking center. Put Boeser with the next best playmaking centerman on the team which at this point is still Granlund. Allows Boeser to find open space and set up for one timers. i will add a physical element with speed to play the primary puck retrieval role and net drive, at this point Virtanen. In the event that Virtanen moves up to Bo’s line then Baertschi adds another playmaker on the wing for Boeser. If we somehow win the draft lottery then Hughes becomes your ideal centerman for Boeser.

Tyler Motte/Leipsic/Tim Schaller – Jay Beagle – Brandon Sutter

NOTE:  This is your pure match up Line with two strong match up players in Beagle & Brandon Sutter.  A combination of Motte or Schaller adds further grit while Leipsic adds playmaking with less grit.

POWER PLAY 1:

current Powerplay has 4 Left shoot & 1 Right Shot. Replace Edler & Baerschi on the first unit.

Load up PP1 using a 4 forward 1 Dman setup featuring  Boeser , Bo , Goldobin, Pettersson,  Stecher . PP features 4 shooters (Boeser, Pettersson, Goldobin, Stecher),  2 playmaker (Pettersson & Goldobin) &  Net drive (Hovart)

                                                                    Bo Hovart(LW)

      Boeser (RW)                                                                                     Pettersson(LW)

                                         Goldobin(LW)

                                                                 Stecher(RD)

BOESER:  As we all know , he is your right shot winger set up threat on the right cycle ready for one timer setup from Pettersson  and/or Goldobin from the middle

GOLDOBIN: adds another puck carrier eliminating the predictable Edler back drop pass while gaining entry . Goldobin adds a playmaker in the middle that can act as a second QB setting up Boeser on the Right and Pettersson on the Left.  He also opens up an option for Bo to pass to from the side of the net.

PETTERSSON: the PP true QB. Set up option for Bo behind the net, Goldobin in the middle & Right shot Dman Stecher

STECHER: is your pure right shoot threat from the point setup from  Pettersson and/or Boeser. Also adds another Puck carrier for PP entry.

BO: is your down low net driver and rebound clean up player and occasional bull his way to the net PP puck entry option.

Future injection of youth to Line up in 2019 assuming we win the Draft lottery & Dahlen & Joulevi & Adam Gaudette & Quinn Hughes are ready.  Asset management

·         Dahlen bumps Eriksson. Hard to trade the contract at this point

·         A Sutter trade to acquire assets and/or picks open up a spot for Gaudette

·         Draft Hughes first overall (due for one)  meaning one of Granlund or Baertschi is traded for assets/ draft picks

·         Michael Del Zotto  and Ben Hutton or Derrick Pouliot trade open up spots for Juolevi & Hughes

·         Resign Edler for 2yrs & retain Tanev for Vetern presence to ease transition. Trade following year depending on who is ready (Tryamkin or future D acquired or drafted)

·         Nilsson trade opens spot for Demko

·         Leipsic likely odd man out. Trade to recoup some asset

2019 Projected Line up

1A: Dahlen – Elias Pettersson – Nikolay Goldobin

1B: Jake Virtanen – Jack Hughes – Brock Boeser

2: Baertschi/Granlund – Bo Hovart – Antoine Roussel

3: Louis Eriksson – Jay Beagle – Adam Gaudette

One of Tim Shaller, Motte,  Macwen , Leipsic as 13th forward

Quinn Hughes – Erik Gudbranson

Olli Juolevi – Chris Tanev

Alex Edler – Troy Stecher

Ashton Sautner – Guillaume Brisebois

Markstrom

A lot is possible for next year.  Gaudette, Lind and Dahlen all could be ready for the NHL which would be great for the Canucks, as would winning the lottery.   It’s seems like it is on the precipice of all coming together (I view  both Hughes and OJ as sure things), it wouldn’t surprise me at all if we play five rookies they all make an impact on the team over the next 18 months.  The biggest of all either positive or negative, will be how well Demko and or Depeitro adjust and make out.  A lot to look forward too, and things are definitely looking up.

Canucks key to success this season is to roll four lines each featuring a key player with complimentary pieces to ensure optimal success. I've always believed in
playing to a players strength and complementing them with players that excel at their weakness. Each line features a heart & soul energy player to keep the intensity
level high on every shift. No designated 1st - 4th line except on any given night most productive line earns the most ice time (driving internal competition). Line D
gets the most defensive starts.

LINE A (Elias Line):    Antoine Roussel(Energy guy) - Elia Pettersson - Nikolay Goldobin

Featured key player/driver is Elia Pettersson. Kid has exceptional creativity and puck skills to drive play along with elite release. He is equally adapt at setting up
line mates and finding open spot to receive and release a wicked wrister. He currently lacks the strength, size and aggressiveness to battle behind the net, along the
boards, hit and battle in the crease for in close goals. Cue complementary pieces  Antoine Roussel (LW) & Nikolay Goldobin.

Antoine Roussel is a blue collar tireless skater that battles, hits, drives the net thus opening up space for skilled players to create. With Goldobin the line has
another play making winger that can set up Pettersson for one timers along with finding open space to release a wrister when opposing defenders key in on Pettersson

Key weakness of the line is in face offs. A solution is to have Jay Beagle & Sutter (depending on side of face off cycle) draw in for key faceoffs and replaced by Goldobin thereafter. (AV employed this strategy often when he was coaching in Vancouver)

LINE B (Bo's Line):     Sven Baertschi - Bo Hovart - Tyler Motte(Energy guy)

Bo Hovart's key strength is his ability to bull himself to the net. He has a tendency to try to beat defender with his inside - outside move and when successful is
effective. However he lacks the true playmaking center ability to make players around him better. Effective wingers for Him are ones that do not need the puck but have
effective puck skills to push play and set up line mates.

Baertschi provides the winger playmaking ability that Bo requires and appears to read off Bo quite well.

Tyler Motte provides hustle, determination and relentless battle.(similar to the role that he played in Chicago on a line with Toews & Hansen/Burrows like role in Vancouver).

LINE C (Boeser Line):   Jake Virtanen(Energy guy) - Markus Granlund - Brock Boeser

Boeser is a pure shooter and requires a good set up man. Boeser and Bo are not an optimal mix as Bo likes the puck too often and is a shoot first Center.

Next to Pattersson, Granlund is the next best playmaking centerman on the team. Virtanen provides the bull drive to the net from the left flank. Virtanen (plain & simple) is most effective and dominant flying from the left wing as it allows him to use his size, lean on defenders while driving the net. It also gives the line a second hard right shoot off wing.On this Line he serves a similar role to that of Roussel on line A.

Acknowlege that Pettersson can center Boeser. However having Boeser as a corner piece on a different line spreads out the offense allowing for tougher match ups for opposing team. When required the team can load up a line featuring Pettersson - Hovart - Boeser.

LINE D: (Beagle & Sutter Line): Tim Schaller(Energy guy) - Jay Beagle - Brandon Sutter

Beagle & Sutter provide the essential heavy lifting and shout down elements thus drawing key match up role.

EXTRA FORWARD: Leipsic

Waived (minor) or IR: Louis Erksson & Sam Gagner & Gaunce & Alex Biega & Jalen Chatfield,

PAIR A:    Alex Edler - Erik Gudbranson

Physical pairing that keeps the opposing teams forwards honest along with the net clearing element. Acknowledge lack of puck carrier. This is negated or limited by
paring them with LINE A that features a puck carrier in Elias and playmaking wing in Goldobin. Two hard shots from the point in Gudbranson (underrated shot) & Edler
(can stand to hit the net more)

PAIR B:      Olli Juolevi - Chris Tanev

Effective defender Tanev paired with an up & coming rookie that can carry the poke. Paired primary with LINE C given Boeser another playmaker on D in Juolevi

PAIR C:     Ben Hutton - Michael Del Zotto

Paired Primarily with LINE B

RESERVE PAIR:    Derrick Pouliot - Troy Stecher

POWER PLAY UNIT 1

                            Hovart(net driver)

Boeser(shooter)                        Pettersson(shooter & QB)

                    Grandlund(shooter & Passer)

         Juolevi(sHOOTER & QB)

Features 3 shooters.

Boeser on the left cycle (moving up to the left D zone). Grandlund in the middle serving as a set up man for Pettersson & Boeser & middle man
shooter option for Pettersson.

Pettersson as the Right side QB and shooter off the right cycle. Set up man for Hovart from down low, Grandlund & cross crease feed to
Boeser.

Hovart serves as the down low, poke in tight man, rebound cleaner, set up man for Grandlund, Boeser.

Juolevi D man QB set up man for Pettersson & Boeser (think World juniors Finn teaM featuring Laine & Pulljave) and wristers from the point.

POWER PLAY UNIT  2

Virtanen             Nikolay Goldobin

           Baertschi

   Ben Hutton    Michael Del Zotto

PK UNIT 1

      Brandon Sutter - Tyler Motte

      Alex Edler - Erik Gudbranson

PK UNIT 2

  Jay Beagle - Tim Schaller

         Del Zotto - Tanev

Rousel will attract goonery, last thing you want around EP..........fail lines. Goons belong on the 4th line
