Popular Post Master Mind
After a strong first half, the Sharks weren't as good after the trade deadline. Still finished with more points than last year (111 vs 108) but facing a Ducks team that's won 11 straight isn't what we had in mind for a first round matchup. On paper the teams look to be built in similar fashion. Both team's top 6 forwards all had 60+ points, while each having a few 70 point players, and one 80 point player. Feels fairly even. Ducks have Niedermayer, but then McKee as next highest scoring d-man. Compared to Ehrhoff and Carle for San Jose. Not sure how I feel about this. Then Giguere vs Lehtonen in net, both high end goalies. Could be a couple shutouts in this series. Will need to win a game early to slow these Ducks down. May the best team to have traded Pronger win @kj29

Kurisu
#3 vs. #6 The dust has settled on the regular season and the long-awaited playoff matchup between the class of the Southeast is finally happening. Washington won the division last season, while Tampa took the title this year. Both teams crashed out to to eventual cup finalists the Boston Bruins last year. Washington narrowly won the season series this year, posting a record of 4-3-1 against the Bolts. The two squads are built very differently, and perhaps the best way to describe this series would be an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. One high-flying offensive outfit takes on a team littered with two-way talent and backstopped by a top-tier goaltender. Tampa Bay holds home ice advantage, but who has the upper hand in each area of the squad? Forwards: Key players: Alexander Ovechkin, Shane Doan, Alexander Semin, Nicklas Backstrom (WSH) Pavol Demitra, Steve Sullivan, David Backes, Vaclav Prospal (TBL) The Capitals bring a destructive offense to the table, led by two top 10 scorers in Alexander Ovechkin and Semin, with Shane Doan and Nicklas Backstrom finishing top 20. They also have dangerous depth including young scorer Tomas Fleischmann and veterans such as Shawn Horcoff and Owen Nolan. Tampa brings a more modest attacking corps, featuring no point-per-game players and only a couple of 30 goal scorers in Vinny Prospal and Pavol Demitra. Late additions David Backes and Derek Roy were hot down the stretch, and will need to continue that. The Lightning have more two-way ability up and down the lineup, but it's pretty hard to argue with the power of the Capitals offense. Edge: Defence: Key Players: Mike Green, Keith Ballard, Steve Eminger (WSH) Mark Streit, Joe Corvo, Dan Hamhuis (TBL) Both teams feature bluelines led by an offensive dynamo, with Streit and Green set to go toe-to-toe on the powerplay. Behind Green is a solid group of defenders, featuring deadline pickup Keith Ballard along with understated bluelines such as Steve Eminger and Shaone Morrisonn. Green really runs the show here, with no other defender on the team eclipsing 30 points. In the other camp, Mark Streit is supported by Joe Corvo in the offensive department, with the duo finishing within 5 points of each other. Both Corvo and Streit are paired with reliable defensive D in Dan Hamhuis and Cory Sarich. While Green may be the best player overall, the Bolts seem to have superior depth and overall puck-moving ability in this department. Edge: Goaltending: Key Players: Manny Fernandez (WSH) Evgeni Nabokov (TBL) A more cut-and-dried comparison in this department, as Tampa's MVP goes up against arguably the Caps weakest link. Nabokov's 0.916 save percentage blows Fernandez and his 0.899 out of the water. Fernandez should not be completely written off though, he was far more reliable in the previous season and still has lots to play for with his contract set to expire in the summer. Nabokov will need to stand up to the pressure he will surely face from Washington's forward group. Edge: Much of this series will rest on the shoulders of Evgeni Nabokov and Alexander Ovechkin. The two MVPs personify their team's respective styles, and whoever comes out on top surely has this series. Another X-factor could be experience level, Fredrik Modin and Cory Sarich remain from Tampa's 2004 cup win, while another member of that squad, Ben Clymer, features for Washington. Special teams also reflect the team styles, with Washington having the better PP and Tampa possessing the stronger PK. All-in-all, this will be a fascinating series with Washington applying heavy pressure and Tampa looking to stifle and counter.
