Kurisu
Another quality regular season is in the books for the Tampa Bay Lightning, and we have won the Southeast division ahead of our hated rivals the Washington Capitals. After losing quite a bit of talent in the offseason, the boys adapted and overcame, going from a four line offence to a stifling defensive system. Rookie Cody Franson stepped in to the NHL this season and held his own quite well, and will be hungry for more icetime next season. Free agents pickups Patrick Thoresen, Jochen Hecht, and Antti Miettinen all met or exceeded expectations. Big deadline acquisitions include Derek Roy and David Backes, two forwards entering their primes who look to be big parts of our core moving forward. Fredrik Modin also made his celebrated return, bringing warrior Greg Zanon with him. The leadership group of Cory Sarich, Fredrik Modin, and Vaclav Prospal are surely already prepping the squad for our first round matchup with Washington. Team Awards: Leading Scorer: Steve Sullivan (29 G, 39 A, 68 P) Key Stats: 22 PPp, 275 SOG, 11 Sh% Steve successfully defended his crown as the team's leading scorer, despite an overall regression in team scoring. His dynamic partnership with Pavol Demitra continued, and the two found a consistent linemate in Vaclav Prospal. Steve finished third in team goals, behind his two linemates. His future remains up in the air, with his contract expiring and the team needing cap space for younger forwards. Runner-ups: Pavol Demitra (30 G, 37 A, 67 P), Vaclav Prospal (33 G, 34 A, 67 P) Team MVP: Evgeni Nabokov (73 GP, 43 W, 24 L, 5 OTL) Key stats: 0.915 Sv%, 2.39 GAA, 2 SO, 2012 SA The star of the show, Evgeni Nabokov. With the team scoring less, Nabby was asked to step up and did so in a massive way. Carrying a massive workload, Nabokov was consistently great, stealing many a game and helping the team to the second best defensive record in the Eastern Conference. His performances could decide the result of our first round series with Washington. Runner-up: Vaclav Prospal (33 G, 34 A, 67 P) Best Defenceman: Joe Corvo (4 G, 42 A, 46 P) Key stats: 25 PPp, +8, 25:45 ATOI, 233 HT, 90 SB, 37 TA Asked to step in to the top four in place of the departing Dan Boyle, Joe delivered big time for the club. Playing with Dan Hamhuis on the second pairing, Joe didn't miss a beat, and even increased his point totals from the previous year. Corvo was a big physical presence, leading the team in hits by a long shot. Joe will return to the club next season, and will no longer be thought of as just a PP specialist. Runner-up: Mark Streit (10 G, 41 A, 51 P) Unsung Hero: Cory Sarich (0 G, 18 A, 18 P) Key stats: +8, 17:17 TOI, 138 HT, 57 TA, 154 SB, 2:53 APKT The captain and longest-tenured Bolt, Cory Sarich was absolutely instrumental in our defensive success this season. Probably the least flashy player on the roster, Cory is loved for his pure grit and defensive game. He led the team in shot blocks and takeaways, and maintained the physicality he's known for. His rock-steady presence is the key to promoting the free-roaming style of partner Mark Streit, who led the team in defenceman scoring. A shining example and beacon for all those who doubt the value of pure defensive defencemen. Runner-up: Saku Koivu (15 G, 21 A, 36 P, 3:00 APKT, 60% FO) Edited April 25, 2020 by Kurisu 3
Popular Post Time Lord
Eastern Conference Quarterfinals Preview #1 Philadelphia Flyers vs #8 Ottawa Senators: The Flyers are a deadly offensive team, finishing top 5 in goals for, with Milan Hejduk, Markus Naslund, Jeff Carter, and Martin St. Louis all finishing in the top 18 in the scoring race. Although the Senators have their own offensive threat with the trio of Dany Heatley, Jason Spezza, and Daniel Alfredsson, they appear to be more of a one-line team. Fortunately for them, they do get a lot of production from their defense, with Wade Redden, Andrej Meszaros, and Chris Phillips all putting up 45+ points, but the Flyers do not struggle in this regard either. The Flyers have the upper hand when it comes to goaltending, as Jaroslav Halak has been noticeably better than Martin Gerber. They also come into the playoffs on a roll. It's hard to pinpoint any reason that gives the Senators a chance to pull off the upset here. Prediction: Philadelphia wins the series in 5 games #2 Boston Bruins vs #7 New Jersey Devils: The best way to describe the 115 point Boston Bruins is well-rounded. They do not have many offensive standouts, but their entire top 6 has over 50 points with a few of them being elite defensively as well. Their top 4 defensemen are also very solid, including Zdeno Chara who is one of the best defensive players in the league. This team mostly consists of players from the team that was 1 goal away from the Stanley Cup last season, so they all have experience playing in big games. The Devils on the other hand lost in the 1st round last season, but they do have a good top 6 of their own, with Zach Parise and Patrik Elias leading the way with 76 points. Their defense may not be as strong as Boston's, but their top 2 defensemen did combine for 121 points! Perhaps the biggest story of the series will be the goaltending duel - Tim Thomas vs Martin Brodeur, 2 of the best goalies in the league backstopping 2 of the best defensive teams in the East. This is one area where the Devils may have a slight edge, and they'll hope to use it to their advantage and win some low-scoring games. Prediction: Boston wins the series in 6 games #3 Tampa Bay Lightning vs #6 Washington Capitals This matchup features a huge divisional rivalry, with both teams fighting for the divisional lead all season long, with the Lightning coming out on top by just 1 point. The two teams are built very differently, with the Lightning not scoring very many goals but not allowing very many either, and the Capitals having the most goals for and most goals against among Eastern playoff teams. The main reason for this is that Manny Fernandez has been one of the worst starters in the league. However, there's no doubt that the Capitals have the ability to outscore their problems, with Alex Ovechkin, Alex Semin, Shane Doan, and Nicklas Backstrom all finishing in the top 15 in points! The Lightning do not come close to matching this, with no forward above 70 points. They do have the clear edge on defense and goaltending, with Evgeni Nabokov being one of the biggest reasons for their success yet again. It's hard to say how this series will go with these polar opposite teams, but look for it to be a close one. Prediction: Washington wins the series in 7 games #4 Pittsburgh Penguins vs #5 Buffalo Sabres Both teams finished the season with 106 points. Although both teams were in danger of missing the playoffs at some point, they found themselves comfortably in a playoff spot by the end. Pittsburgh has the superior offense, led by their immaculate center depth consisting of Sidney Crosby and the Staals. The Sabres' trio of Thomas Vanek, Chris Drury, and Jason Pominville just has not been as good as it was last season, which means they might need a strong defensive performance to win the series. Luckily for them, they have the goalie with the 2nd highest save percentage in the league, Ryan Miller. While Marc-Andre Fleury of the Penguins is a good goalie as well, he cannot steal games like Miller can. Prediction: Buffalo wins the series in 7 games 3
Popular Post Go Faulk Yourself
For the first time in franchise history, the Columbus Blue Jackets will be apart of the Stanley Cup playoffs. After fighting on the outside of the playoffs looking in for a good portion of the season, the Blue Jackets clawed back and went on a tear after the trade deadline to squeak their way into the 8th seed in the Western Conference. For a good majority of the season, there was no consistency on the roster, and as trade deadline approached it was clear a good majority of the roster still has a lot of development ahead of them, and was to be expected that there was going to be bumps in the road. With that in mind the Blue Jackets only made what could be seen as minor moves around deadline time, shipping off Brule, Westcott, and waiving Saprykin, while acquiring veterans Reinprecht, Gill, and calling up David Jones from our AHL affiliate. Truly we didn't expect to make the playoffs with what were seen as minor moves but they've clearly paid dividends and pushed us. The Columbus Blue Jackets will now play the Vancouver Canucks in the first round, and will prove to be quite a brutal task for our first playoff appearance. If we can at the very least keep up with the Canucks in the series and give our fans something to cheer for, then we'll take it.Team Awards:Team MVP: Petr Sykora, with 45 goals and 32 assists. Led the team in goals and tied for the team lead in points with 77, alongside Rick NashBest Defenseman: Chris Pronger, with 7 goals 38 assists. Changed the entire makeup of our blueline with his presence this season and has proven to be a worthwhile acquisition. Kris Russell a very close 2nd, as he led all defensemen with 49 points, in his first NHL season. Unsung Hero: The entire 4th line of Jody Shelly, Wayne Primeau and Mike Grier. All 3 were absolutely amazing all season long consistently winning us games all season, more than we could honestly ask for from them. Jody Shelly had 19 points, Wayne Primeau had 21, and Mike Grier had 30 points this season. 3 1
Master Mind
@Go Faulk Yourself I'm happy to see the trade work out for you. Grier was really good on my fourth line last playoffs, he might be able to chip in a couple goals (if Luongo leaves the game temporarily for a bathroom break). 2
