NJ Devils 2022 January Organization Update

We haven't done a team update since the start of the season.  Given our recent transaction we felt it was time to provide an update to our fans. The move we made today was for a better tomorrow. Losing our #1 starter is definitely a loss to any organization. Adding a supremely talented young defender in Mikhail Sergachev was just to good to pass up on though. I would like to thank @D-Money for the continous negotiations. D-Money and I have been in regular communication around NJ acquiring Sergachev since last off-season. It took a considerable amount of time and effort but I am glad we were able to find a solution that fits both of our needs. We wish him well in the post-season and will be cheering on the canes for sure!

In losing Darcy Kuemper and his leadership we gain a promising young defender who we believe can be a building block for our ever improving youth movement. Parting ways with Tyler Boucher a former Top 10 pick from the 2021 Draft is a hard pill to swallow but the move made sense from an organization standpoint. We have done a phenomenal job adding young talent but severely lacked good young blueliners. With our center depth hopefully solidified with Jack Hughes, Quinton Byfield, and Alex Newhook; we saw this as an opportunity to address a bigger need. We wish Tyler well in his new organization and hope he thrives, hopefully not hurting to many of our guys in future divisional matchups .

We were thoroughly impressed with the efforts of our world jr attendees and would like to congratulate them all on well played tournaments.  Samuel Helenius finished 6th in World Jr scoring with 4 points in 2 games played. We were very surprised by his play and are very happy for him and his development.  Our goalie of the future Yaroslav Askarov had another challenging tournament sporting an 0.813 SV% in his 1 start for Russia. We remain optimistic about his development as he has proven his talent vs top players in Russia's pro league the KHL. We look forward to seeing him potentially coming over as early as next year. Likely joining our the Comets but he will be given a fair chance at camp!

Quinton Byfield has finally returned from the broken ankle he suffered in a pre-season game earlier this year. He is currently warming up in the AHL and is expected to join the main club in the next week or two most likely. We look forward to his NHL debut as a Devil!

We are now exploring trade options both as a seller and as a buyer. The addition of Sergachev opens up the opportunity for us to make a bit of an earlier push if we find the right pieces at the right price. We are open to moving prospects as long as it doesn't impact our overall direction. ie subtracting key pieces from our prospect/pick pool.  Hit us up if you are both a buyer or seller. We are seeking defenseman, wingers, and a younger NHL Goalie.

Tampa Bay Update:

With Tampa Bay sitting 4th in the division and what very likley will be the outside of the wildcard at our pace, we may look to go into sell mode this season. We have 2/3 teams on Aaron Ekblads list interested in his services. Should we go the route of dealing Ekblad, we will likley be going in the direction of selling.

This year has been a bit of a dissapointment, but we have no one to blame but ourselves. The offseason was focused on adding youth, which we did, however, we have taken too many chances on too many bubble players that have now nipped us in the butt. Should negotiations go well with Ekblad, and he is dealt, you can expect to see the likes of Kevin Shattenkirk, Jonas Brodin, Anthony Mantha, Blake Coleman, and Frank Vatrano all have their names on the block.

Ideally we will be looking for proven young forwards, as well as a future, or already younger starting Goalie. We feel we have youth to build this team around, but some are still 2-3 years away. We will also focus our attention on adding picks in the 2022 draft, though we may consider 2023, but prefer 22.

Stay tuned, Tampa may be a hot bed come the Trade Deadline a mere 76 days away!

We have a trade to announce...

To ARZ - Aaron Ekblad

To TBL - Ty Smith, Janis Moser, Matias Maccelli, Alex Stalock, ARZ 2022 1st Round Pick, PIT 2022 1st Round Pick

Would like to say thanks to @Gallyfor fair and easy negotiations. We wish Aaron all the best of luck in Arizona as he and the team pursue the CDCFL Cup! Aaron was a true leader here with the team and it is really too bad that a horrific injury last year derailed his season with us.

We would like to welcome Ty, Janis and Matias to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Ty we feel will pone day grow to a player of Ekblad's stature, so it was a no brainer to bring him back in the deal. We are excited to watch Janis and Matias grow within our organization as we get younger going forward. We also welcome Alex. His career may be over but we will use him as a mentor to our younger goalies as time goes on and will work with whatever Alex chooses to do with his future and his heart condition.

With this trade being made, Tampa Bay will likley turn into sellers as the TDL comes. We will be reaching out to playoff teams that Anthony Mantha has on his list, and no playoff bound player is off limits. We will be looking at adding more picks as we go, as well as more youth where we can, and the emphasis as we have repeatedly said this year will to be build from a fresh young goalie out
