Tampa Bay Lightning "Almost" mid season report

Been a boring day today, so why not post some fun things! Like Rush would say, if you don't like to read things, then continue on. Did it for my own amusement mostly :p

Ranked "Graduated" Prospects

Spoiler

1. Ty Smith - Acquired in a recent trade, Ty becomes one of Tampa's top rated prospects. Though he is not producing offensivley this season with only 9 points in 30 games, We have high hopes that with some time and patience that Ty will be producing 40-50 Points a year

2. Filip Zadina - Sadly Filip is not having the year that we would have expected, however now being a full time NHLer, we expect that he will grow into his role. We still have hopes that Filip can be a top line producer, but right now we expect him to get to the 40-50 Pt plateau

3. Janis Moser - Acquired along with Ty Smith, Janis was a bit of an unknown. Our scouts were high on him though. He is a producing dman, and so far in a small sample in North America, he has not dissapointed

4. Logan Brown - Many GM's have written off Logan Brown. But our belief in him has turned into a bit of a reward. Though he has slowed down of late, Logan started his NHL career off hot. We expect that Logan will stick in the NHL and be a servicable 3rd liner who can be used in the top 6 as well

5. Phillipp Kurashev - We had high hopes on Kurashev to become a servicable top 6 player. Though he is still young, we feel that may not be a complete reality for him. We are hoping thta with a young team in rl that he can still grow and score like he did in Jr's

6. Alexie Protas - Acquired in a deal earlier this season, Alexie was a surprise to get some playing time this season. We are very happy thus far though with the 6'6" powerforward. We have seem flashes of scoring, as well as a hard nosed play. We are excited for what may become of Alexie

7. Gustav Lindstrom - A steady dman, some may view him as a defensive dman, but thus far this season have a +10 rating shows that he is in the right places and making the right plays at the right time. We hope to see Gustav grow into a dman who can potentially put up 20 points a year

8. Filip Gustavsson - We are happy to see Filip grab a spot as a full time NHLer, but we still feel he has some development to do still. We still have hopes that Filip will be a great 1A/1B goalie, but we will see how this tough season either develops him or hurts him

9. Adam Ruzicka - Adam is a guy we are happy to have seen get the chance. We feel Adam can be a solid bottom 6 contributor. But we also feel there is room for his game to continue to grow

10. Robin Salo - Robin has had a bit of a slow start. Whether it is adapting to North America, or lack of playing time, we like what we have seen in Robin. Should he adjust well, he will be a top 4 Dman and a contributor to our team

Ranked In The Sytem Prospect

Spoiler

1. Philip Tomasino (Drafted 30th overall 2019 FL Draft - Buffalo Sabres) - Though Philip is "Graduated" this season and playing in the NHL, we used our ELC on him and are sure happy we have. Philip has shown enough to stay up with the big club. Playing just over 11Min a night and producing 11 Pts in 29 games, we feel as he grows and his ice time increases that he will be able to fill a top 6 role, potentially even a top line. We are very excited for his continued development

2. Brandon Coe (Drafted 91st overall 2020 FL Draft - Tampa Bay Lightning) - Brandon has really come out of nowhere this season. Being the leading scorer in the OHL this season with 55 pts in 31 games. We hope he can carry this type of production into the pros. We are excited to see what he can do when he gets to the AHL and hope this is a sign of things to come for him

3. Xavier Bourgault (Drafted 28th overall 2021 FL Draft - Tampa Bay Lightning) - Xavier is also another prospect who has been on a tear in the WHL. Averaging 1.75 pts/g, we knew exactly what we were getting when we drafted him and he has not dissapointed. We are very excited for his continued development and we had wished we were able to see him in the WJC, but we are very happy with his play thus far non the less

4. Sasha Pastujov (Drafted 25th overall 2021 FL Draft - Tampa Bay Lightning) - Sasha is a player we had hoped would lead his team a bit more in points, but 1.35 pts/g is no easy task. We feel Sasha has developed a bit slower then say the likes of Xavier, but the Guelph Storm team that he leads was also not that great this season being a team that almost lost as much as they won. We like Sasha's game and are very confident that we will see him in a top 6 role soon enough in the pro's

5. Shakir Mukhamadulin (Drafted 68th overall 2020 FL Draft - Tampa Bay Lighting) - Shakir is a player we have been excited about since drafting him. Being drafted 68th overall by us, but 20th overall in rl, we knew that we had a player that was going to be special. There was a bit of an unknown about him, but our scouts tell us he is only improving every game this year. Again, not being able to play in wjc was a bit of a hit, but we are still very high on Shakir and see him being a potential top pair for us soon.

6. Matias Maccelli (Drafted 88th overall 2019 FL Draft - Arizona Coyotes) - Acquired in a recent trade, Matias has come over and is producing at a point per game clip in the AHL and only being 21. We feel that Matias has the potential to be a surprise and really break out into an NHL star

7. Niko Huutanen (Drafted 115th overall 2021 FL Draft - Tampa Bay Lightning) - Niko may be a bit of an unknown to some, but we are very happy to have drafted him where we did. He was drafted as the last pick in the NHL draft, but he has produced 36 pts in 32 games this season with the Everett Silvertips. His season started slow, however, he has really broken out this season in a big way. He is ranked at 7th as we are excited to see how a bit of an unknown player will develop.

8. Marcus Kallionkieli (Drafted 90th overall 2019 FL Draft - Vegas Golden Knights) - We were happy to acquire and sign Marcus last off season as we feel that he will become a contributor in our bottom 6, or even a player who can play as high as the 2nd line. Marcus is a hard nosed player, who is producing very well at an AHL level, and we hope to see him continue to do so.

9. Drew Commesso (Drafted 82nd overall 2020 FL Draft - Buffalo Sabres) - We are hoping that Drew has what it takes to become a starter for us in a few years. He will take a few years yet to develop, but he has all the tools we feel to become that goalie that will steal us games and run with a #1 job

10. Jack LaFontaine (Signed as a Free Agent, Summer 2021) - Jack has taken a small step back this season with his numbers. However, we feel Jack as well with a couple years of development has what it takes to be a solid 1B or backup goalie. We still have hopes that he can become a starter. But with goalies you never know.

Honourable Mentions

Blake McLaughlin

Yan Kuznetsov

Graeme Clarke

Blake Biondi

Shai Buium

The Good:

Spoiler

1. Oliver Kylington - Oliver has been a great story this season. Another player who many wrote off as a bust, has shown everyone the exact opposite. Very happy with his growth

2. Kevin Shattenkirk - Kevin has shown this season that he still has the drive and want to win and not to mention he has been producing as well.

3. Prospects - Tampa Bay is proud that many prospects we have either drafted or acquired have been producing, or showing some real potential. Though we are in a bit of a lull right now, our future looks good should it hold up

The Bad:

Spoiler

1. Filip Zadina - Unfortunately, Filip has not loved up to what we had expected of him. We are still hoping that Filip can bounce back and maybe this is a sophmore slump, but being our biggest piece in a deal that saw Shesterkin shipped out, right now is making us look silly in that deal

2. Adam Gaudette - It seems as though he has played himself out of the big leagues. With only 10 games under his belt this year, we had hoped that Adam would have been a player to produce at least 30 pts this season. As with Zadina, being a piece in a bigger deal, we had hoped he would be a piece that would produce

3. Results - We would be remise if we did not put our results thus far in here. Being in 22nd place, we are in jeopardy of missing out on the playoffs for the first time since taking over Tampa Bay in 2017 (with a brief absence mixed in there). Though we knew the time would come eventually, it is on our shoulders as we made moves that looking back now only hurt us. We hope that we will learn from moves we made (or shouldnt have) and will retool this team into a young team that will contend in the coming years. We understand everyone has to take their lumps

The Ugly

Spoiler

1. Injuries - As it sits at this moment, Tampa Bay has $28M on injured reserve. Of those players, we have 3 of our top 6 forwards on IR as well as Colin White who we acquired in the off season and has yet to suit up for us. Unfortunately it has led to our results as well though not solely to blame. With most our players on IR having been out or are out long term, it has also been a string of bad luck

Will be willing to take cap back to match or if a team is looking to clear to acquire more assets. Of course for a small price. Most players still ahve term, which makes these more then a rental. These are only starting points. Willing to work with teams and juggle prices.
