We’re not close. We have some of the worst defensive stats in our franchise history. What part of that gives you confidence this team is close to being consistent enough to make the playoffs?

This team is absolutely fascinating to watch.  The offense works reasonably well much of the time and they generate numerous scoring chances.  Would score more if they had more confidence in themselves;  also if they put some variety into the pp instead of same old rinse and repeat.  However, when the puck is in their D zone sheer panic grips them and they act completely irrationally. It's comical really !  Most other teams have a coach who teaches defense - wonder why we don't.  

 

Sad,  sad,  sad,  sad,  sad.  What a waste of prime years for players like Petey.  Also, would seriously entertain trading Hughes for the right package - he's too one-dimensional.

We aren’t supposed to be this bad. The talent and skill is more than what is being produced. Yes, we aren’t contenders but we shouldn’t be a bottom 10 team!

I think they're not as far off as they seem either.  They can score and a halfway decent defensive coach would have this group on the bubble.........if demko were healthy

I've been watching for 52 years and this is the 1st year I pause and fast forward so I don't have to watch the whole s#*t show. Mind you, it's only been a few years that we've had the capacity to pause/record. How did I handle all those other years of crap hockey?

Poor team defense is all coaching, or lack thereof.

Until we can score consistently while playing well on our own end we don’t have anything sustainable.

 

Great players and teams get it done at both ends of the ice. Right now I only see a few players on this team that can play that way.

They can score because they cheat defensively and give up a ton of chances.

 

Any team can play that way. The truly great teams don’t cheat defense to create offense.

 

This team needs to show it can take care of its own end first. Until then they’re just a bunch of me first players pumping their stats.

Agreed, but they've got enough fire power that they could play defense first and still score enough to win

It still pains me to reply to anything of your's with that mugshot in my face but you are absolutely correct.  That's kind of what Bieksa was getting at too I think when talking to the team (I thought there was a little dig at management as well).....lines need an identity and players need to know their role.  The 3rd and 4th lines shut down the other teams and pushed a pace that wore down the other teams.

 

I'm a little lost on what OEL's identity is these days though.  He's not really offensive and he's not really reliable.

If they do and they’re just not then I’d question their character.
 

If they don’t and need to be taught I don’t have much faith they’re players you’re ever gonna win meaningful games with.

I'm really hoping management is just going to blow this team up and has the smarts to create a rebuild that we can all get excited about as they grow. I just hope Petey sticks around to lead the charge.

The first point reminded me of 2011 Malhotra, Torres, and Hansen. What a third line that was.

This will take care of itself. There’s only like 3 or 4 teams I can see us beating. Chicago, Columbus, Philly, and Detroit. And even then I’m not confident we can beat any of them right now.

 

Our last month has tons of games against fellow tankers though. That will be the true test whether or not we’re contenders or pretenders. No going on 5 game meaningless win streaks for moral victories. They need to ensure we’re icing the best (worst) roster possible. 
 

I dunno about Detroit tbh, they've been better this season from what I can tell

Of course I'd love to see a Bedard quality forward with the Canucks, but scoring is not our problem. Defense, holy f*&#. And I think we have at least adequate defensemen, excepting those two old farts (not meaning Schenn). We obviously don't have coaching that can make the entire team understand how to stop the other team from so easily scoring goals. Where the hell is our defense coaching? Pathetic!
