He would've been gone all alone, and no one was going to catch him. That's the rule, though you don't see it called that far out often.

Nope, I'm sure Tampa would've rather had the penalty. Now if it was Stammer, Kuch or Point taking the pentaly shot, that's a different story.

It's literally right in the rule book. If a player is on a breakaway, with possession, and is tripped or impeded from behind then a penalty shot will be awarded.

 

A penalty shot will be awarded for the following acts:

When a player is fouled while on a breakaway, and the situation meets the following five criteria:

The puck carrier is in the Neutral or Attacking Zone.

The puck carrier has possession and control of the puck.

The puck carrier has no other opposing players to pass (other than the goaltender).

The puck carrier is tripped or fouled from behind, or fouled by the goaltender.

The puck carrier must be denied a reasonable scoring opportunity.

 

It definitely met all 5 criteria.
