Zack Kassian Talk

Be fun to see him torment; even punish and wear down defenders jousting in front of the net, intimidate goalies (see Tomas, Tim), draw penalties...

Heck if we trade Lou to Chicago it could be a complete role reversal?

Finally a player that can hold his own in front of the other teams net.

Kes can fill that role, but he's too important to the team's success to be the only one standing there taking the abuse all the time. We need him healthy for playoffs.

It's true, Kassian would be able to hold is own in front of the net create some havoc, and he could definitely clean up the garbage.

He's certainly responsible for a lot more goals than his points total would imply. He's putting up some good points too but he's screening the crap out of the goalies. He just seems like he can't be moved, whether along the boards or in front of the net. Love seeing it.

Was anyone reminded of Byfuglien's series-winner against the Sharks when Kassian scored that 3rd goal in front of the net? Save for the rebound, it was almost the same exact scenario, after a pass by the RW from the left corner. Very smilar maneuver to score it too.

Put this guy on a line with the Sedins in a year and I guarantee he puts in 30.

It's not just about offense with the Sedins though. You kind of need a defensive specialist out there to minimize damage if they end up stuck in their own end - which is why Burrows works so well.

Burrows is smart enough and skilled enough offensively to work with the Sedins and go to the dirty areas that can create room for them, but he is also very good defensively to cover for the Sedins who aren't bad but aren't great in the defensive zone. I'd say Kassian isn't ready yet to take that defensive role on yet, and as a hulking power forward, maybe never. Most power forwards are not known for their defensive play...

I could see him out there on the shift after a PK or an odd shift or two when AV inevitably mixes his lines, but not on a regular basis with them. I can see him have tonnes of success with Kesler though:

Kassian is a passing winger - Kesler is a shooting center

Kassian is a big screen in front of the net - Kesler is a shooting center

Kassian can clean up rebounds for garbage goals - Kesler is a shooting center

And Kesler is excellent defensively to make up for any laziness that comes naturally with being a young budding power forward, and Kassian also seems to continue to be working on that so it shouldn't be a problem.

A line of Booth - Kesler - Kassian would be my dream 2nd line.

It all depends on how we groom him. It seems like even among power forwards, there are two types of players, those who are good defensively, and those who are not. He could turn into a Milan Lucic or Evande Kane-type player, or more like a Wayne Simmonds, Ryan Clowe or Shane Doan-like player.

Yea! I agree completely. Kassian has some great vision out there and I can see him setting up Booth And Kes for some nice scoring opportunities.

I did notice he was a little slow/tired-looking on the backcheck. He will need to work on that to really be effective as a top 6 NHL forward.

With Schroeder coming up, and with guys like Jensen and Gaunce developing, our forward group looks pretty good :)

We just have to hope the Sedins stay healthy (and motivated enough) to school these guys a little bit before they retire.

I could see the Booth Kesler Kassian line working as long as they have some chemistry, but i like for two reasons he is big and will only get bigger so him in front of the net with booth or kes on the puck is no easy save.

he is not selfish he likes to shoot when the chance is a good one but it seems like he can find those little holes to make a nice pass something Booth and Kes need in a big way esp on the rush.

i can just imagine the mess that will be caused with Kass and Booth charging the net one after the other battling for loose pucks and kes waiting just outside for it to pop loose. ( can also see many a goaltender interference penalties being called.....for being a Nuck)

Well said! This would be a second line that would be a force to be reckoned with. The Canucks have a great second line as is, but when Kassian develops into his game, and if he develops to this potential, this line would be unreal.

Yes I agree also that a second line with Booth Kesler an Kassian would work as well. Maybe Kinda like a legion of doom line. I just hope Kass improves his defensive game that way AV doesn't bench him. This kid is something special and has the poetential to be better then a Todd Bertuzzi.. Yes I said it BETTER than a Todd Bertuzzi. He just needs to put it all together..

Glad to see Kassian produce at the professional level, he certainly has the talent. What concerns me is his lack of work ethic. His play without the puck was really disconcerting, he needs someone in his ear to remind him that to succeed in the NHL, he needs to play well at both ends of the ice. It appears to me that he is not ready for the big show and has some maturing to do.

Re watched Sat nights game. I'm just really impressed with his vision and soft hands. He never got the ice time in Van last season, so I was never really able to see what he's capable of doing. Quite frankly, I'm excited to watch this guy develop. He's got the tools to be the 'full package' and he's a Canucks prospect. Shocker.

As others have mentioned, his defensive game needs work. I'm also think he's confused about the system. I see him talking to his d-men quite a bit when he goes back for break outs, he looks confused and fumbles about positioning. All those things will change with time. In Van, he won't have the luxury of playing questionable defense. His teammates and AV will ride him like a donkey.

I also like his off-ice demeanor. He spent most of his summer trekking North American to train - that says a lot about young kids. But I love that he opened a twitter account. I know, it's twitter. But there are a lot of professional athletes who won't touch social media cause it opens up a portal for constant abuse. Not only does he interact w/ fans, but he's 'P.C.'. He's 21 yrs old and he gets it. Booth and many other NHLers are way older than him and get themselves into 'twitter trouble' cause they're basically stupid (and/or unaware of social cues). Either way, I def respect that he's brighter than the avg joe and 'aware' both on twitter and in interviews.

This. Everyone is pointing out his excellent offensive play and rightly so. But his play without the puck was disappointing. He just looked so so so lazy. Lazy backchecking, lazy zone coverage, lazy forechecking and if he lost the puck there was no effort to get it back. He looked like he didn't want to be there and it showed. You can see the skill, puck protection ability and potential when the puck is on his stick, but when its not he looked like a liability.

I'm not saying he's a bust, but I agree with you. He needs a much better work ethic to make it in the NHL.

I don't completely agree with this. If you're talking about last season, I think maybe his conditioning was an issue, but not so much this season. Kassian will never be great in defensive end of the rink, but he won't be a liability either. This season he has looked much better overall.

I think he still does need work along the wall in the offensive zone, but that will come with more and more experience.
