[Rumour] Schenn + 5Th Overall To Oilers For Top Pick

Recommended Posts

While I somewhat disagree with Schenn being at the WHC this year, he is still a young player who can develop into a gem. I think the Oilers can squeeze a little more out of Burke. But getting a young NHL ready defenseman now and possible draft another at #5 would accelerate the rebuild process.

I actually think this makes a lot of sense for the Oilers. They've got a very good, young offensive group with Hall, Eberle, RNH, Gagner and Paajarvi. Now, if they can put together a defensive group with the likes of Whitney, Shultz, Schenn, Smid, Musil and Dumba, this gives them one of the top young defensive cores in the NHL. The only question for the future would be goaltending.

This would also make sense for Toronto too. They already have a decent defensive core with Liles, Phaneuf, Gardiner, Franson and Gunnarson. By adding Yakupov, they'd be giving themselves a superstar to continue building the offense around. Yakupov, Kessel, Lupul, Grabovski and Kulemin would be a very good group to build around.

The only problem with this for Toronto is that I think, if they're moving their 5th overall pick, it should be to solidify the most pressing need on the team which everyone knows is goaltending.

Its funny how people rag on Schenn when he's only 22, and when people rag on Kassian, those same people say, "Give him a break! He's only 21!". It's really weird. Schenn has so much potential, he has more hits, like the poster above said, than any Canuck defencmen. If we had Schenn, people wouldn't bash him.

You guys are all idiots ragging on Schenn.

He is only 22 years old, is 6'2", 230lbs, had MORE hits than ANYONE on Vancouver, blocks alot of shots, decent points playing on a crappy team at a young age. Plus, he hasn't had a major injury yet.

At 22 years old, cut him some slack. I would actually really like him in our system.

would you trade 2 1st round picks a long with 2 solid roster players for a UFA rental. ? No, probably not. It has happened. Would you trade 1st round pick prospect, a top 6 foward and 2 more first round picks for an aging defencemen? No probably not, But it has happened.

Seeing those trades do you only think Luongo is worth the 5th pick? Brian Burke should be in jail for such robbery. Who the hell do you plan to use that 5th pick for??

My arguement is Luongo is worth more then 5th overall pick.

Filip Forsberg is going to be a star in this league. I wouldn't be so quick to underestimate the impact a young star player can have on a team. Just look at the impact Tyler Seguin or Brayden Schenn are already having on their teams.

If you can get a team that is going to take on that much salary that is also on his list, you gotta consider that trade. The offers are only going to go down as he gets up in age.

I would take a young prospect with unlimitted potential, then taking on another contract like Malone or Lecavalier like many have been suggesting.

It's hard to find a player like yakupov again,, I heard on one of the sports networks recently that teams that traded down from the 1st overall pick alwamost always got the worst of the trade no matter the package

If I was making the decision I'd keep the 1st pick and pick a future superstar rather than getting two above average players

I'll try to look up the history of teams that traded their 1st overall when I have some time later on and post it,, unless someone has the time before me and looks it up

Edit while yakupov is the consensus number one I think Grego will be as good if not better in the long run
