Two males are confirmed as deceased, IHIT spokesperson Sergeant Jennifer Pound said in a statement posted to Twitter. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team responded after reports of a shooting Monday at the Executive Hotel, said CTV. Police are not yet confirming the identities of the two men, but sources in both law enforcement and organized crime have confirmed the identifies. Both men are well known to police. Dhak, 28, is currently on trial in B.C. Supreme Court for trafficking ecstasy back in 2008. The trial was adjourned Friday until Tuesday morning. Mantel, 30, was due in Surrey Provincial Court in January for dangerous driving and obstructing a police officer charges laid in 2010 after an encounter with the Gang Task Force. Click here to see more photos of the shooting Mantel would often escort Dhak through the Vancouver Law Courts, walking with him from the parking lot to the 6th floor where Dhak's trial was being held. But when the pair arrived at the security gate with an xray machine and metal detector, Dhak would go through the screening, while Mantel would leave before being screened. Police have warned repeatedly over the last year that Dhak and his associates were targeted by rivals after the assassination of Jon Bacon in Kelowna in August 2011. Dhak's brother Gurmit was gunned down at Metrotown in October 2010 in another brazen daylight shooting that led to a series of violent retaliatory strikes. Police sources say gang tensions are escalating again after a period of relative calm across the Lower Mainland. And gang specialists in law enforcement believe the Burnaby shooting at the entrance to the Executive Hotel will likely spur on more violence. One of the men was found outside the main entrance to the hotel, where shattered glass litters the pavement. The second man was found half inside the hotel. The shootings occurred about 11:30 a.m. at the hotel, which is on Lougheed Highway, An employee from Napa Auto Parts reportedly performed CPR on one of the victims. Police had roped off the hotel and were scouring the grounds and around parked cars in the afternoon. Two unidentified women were escorted out of the hotel by police. "I'm always amazed there aren't more casualties in a shooting like this," said RCMP Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. Witnesses say they heard several gunshots. Chris Hashimoto was just getting out of bed at his condo on Halifax Street, next to the hotel, when the shots were fired. "I thought it was construction happening across the street. It sounded like heavy machinery the first couple of times, and after the few shots, the rapid succession, I thought no - that sounded like gunfire," he said from his balcony overlooking the scene. He said police cruisers, a fire truck and two ambulances were visible. Pound said it's not known yet if the shots were fired from inside or outside the hotel. The hotel, on Lougheed between Gilmour and Madison, is tucked away behind a shopping complex. A continuing education complex sits nearby. One thing that can be said for being a gangster in metro Vancouver - there is little need for retirement planning. Should be some regulators in place to watch GS I have personally been harassed by them after mistaken identity. I'm not sure about that unit and really how much good they do. Electro Rock Posted November 27, 2012 Share Posted November 27, 2012 The mid level gangs and the Hells Angels are just symptoms of the higher level organized crime problem that has taken hold in B.C. Get rid of them and more will take their place. Anyway why do these guys all seem to walk around in public where they're vulnerable to ambush? Short of a top notch executive protection detail who are authorized to carry guns there's not much chance for the target. The Lower Mainland is a small place and there are eyes everywhere.
