Time to bring in Mike Keenan for the rebuild! If you have to tank, then at least tank properly

So much for the biggest story of the new season being Luongo. Lol.

If it wasn't clear before, it's certainly clear now: TO is a puppet franchise.

If Burke was taking a new position elsewhere, he wouldn't have been fired. By firing Burke, the Leafs will have to pay severance. If Burke had a new position, the Leafs could release him from his contract and they wouldn't have to give him anything in terms of severance.

IMO, this is just a straight up firing, though at the oddest of times. My guess is that ownership wanted a new coach, and Burke refused to can Carlyle, so the Leafs fired Burke. Carlyle could get the axe soon too, though for me this all seems like odd timing.

OMG we could've had McKeown!

I think Virtanen was a terrible pick given that he's out for 6 months which will hinder his development. You don't pick someone at #6 under that circumstance, along with the fact that he was given a 3/5 IQ (aka he's dumb).

God dammit Benning. WHY VIRTANEN? Terrible move.

Down by the River - Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.

Was told in June new Leafs ownership was not going to renew Burke once contract expires, once they took over. Surprised happened now

That came out of nowhere. It was expected he'd be fired the end of the season if they didn't make the playoffs. Perhaps a deal was in place for Luongo and MLSE did not agree? That or maybe Burke goes to replace Bettman as the Commish.

Looks like Luongo stays put or goes to some other team (maybe those Edmonton rumors have something to it...)

@SportsnetSpec: Sounds like Burke did NOT want to make Luongo deal, while many in Leafs org did. Burke a principled man.

Burke did nothing for Toronto but give away draft pick...could have Tarves, Seguin, and Haltmon..........instead no future for the leafs

why cant Bettman be fired!!!!!

Burke hates goaltenders. Nonis, likely interim GM, already traded for Lu once. Call me crazy...I think this increases the chances of Lu to Toronto...pending MLSE allows the contract to come on the books.

Rhinogator-What part is surprising because to me the Burke aspect is far from surprising considering his history here.

Burke has been GM since 2008 and the Leafs have not made the playoffs during that time. I don't find this hugely surprising, even if the timing seems a bit odd.

Also, if Burke had any intention at all of going into the season with Scrivens and Reimer in net ... wow, he deserved to go. Completely understandable why that would make the owners sweat.

Good news for us. The return for Luongo just shot through the roof. (If he waives.)

But i hope Burke steps out of the GM game entirely. (And into Bettman's shoes? Hmmm...)

Nonis has the same principles (didn't throw away Kesler/Edler for Richards back when Richards was with Tampa).

If the Leafs owners want Luongo (which is great for Canuck fans), I have a hard time seeing them fire Burke and replace him with his understudy, as they will likely get the exact same reaction from Nonis.

MLSE woudn't fire him over a hockey trade.

As McKenzie stated, its probably a personality clash within MLSE new owners and Burke and having a guy who is terrible with the media and fans being the face of a team owned by MEDIA companies! lol

Its not about Lou, but certainly could have implications.

Burke was the most vocal GM against back diving deals and had a huge propensity to overate his own goalies to a detriment to his teams shots at the Cup (ahem Cloutier ahem).

My guess is that the new ownership has no interest in risking the playoffs again on subpar goaltending after the Leafs were the only team NOT to make the playoffs during the last CBA. They don't want to start off on the wrong foot and WANT the Luongo *splash*.

Kassian.... Taylor Pyatt 3.0

Lies. He's more of a Steve Bernier. Hopefully his talent level goes up so he can become like a Taylor Pyatt.
