if a cashier gave you extra change without relizing it and you knew it, would you keep it or give it back

so a cashier today inadvertently handed me an extra $10 bill in change, i gave it back, conscience naturally kicked in and i didn't want the poor girl getting in trouble for it when she counts her balance at the end of the shift. i believe in karma

but this got me thinking, in a simillar situation, would you have pocketed the change or give it back? please vote.

I never really count the change when I get it back from a cashier, I just put it into my purse.

If I did notice that I received extra money, I would return it.

when the new $50 bills first came out, a guy paid me $100 (2 x $50) but he actually handed me 3 bills by accident. I gave it back without thinking twice.. kind of a reversal of your situation, i was working and he was the customer..

It has happened a couple of times to me over the years and I have returned the excess money. Nothing much to think about IMHO. You either are honest and have integrity, or you do not.

I work in retail and if you're till is shorter than $3.00 or over $3.00 you're in trouble.

The kind thing for the customer to do would be give back the change or bill so the employe doesn't potentially lose their job.

The vote is currently 9 to 1 in favour of returning the money. I've worked with cash my whole life and trained cashiers etc. I don't believe it.

Probably give it back. Assuming I noticed. I mean, some guy left his cash in the gym change room a while back and I could have very well walked away with it coming to the conclusion that he isn't coming back for it and if I don't take it, someone else will anyway. Of course I returned it to the front desk. Whether that guy got his money back or the those at the front desk kept it I'll never know

It depends how much extra change I received. I'd probably keep the extra if it was a loonie or toonie. Any more than that and I'd give it back.

A year or so ago I bought a new piercing for my eyebrow.. I took my change and went out to my car and put it in.. the bead was defective so I went back in.. The girl who sold it to me realized she short changed me and thought I came back in for it.. But I had no clue and probably wouldn't have noticed.

But I would return it if I was given too much..

It depended on the store for me. My example goes way back to when CD's were still purchased at big music stores. I happily walked up to the register with over 200 bucks in CD's, and when I went to punch in my debit card number, I noticed the total was off by a decimal point in my favour. Bonus for me. My lifetime of purchases had been rewarded. I could care less about a chain corporation.

If that happened in a mom and pop store though, different action by me. More honesty, honestly.

Oh yeah, before someone comes out and says "that's still dishonest", you're right, and I'll refer you back to the part stating that I didn't care. I can count on 2 hands the number of times someone has dropped cash on the ground near me. They always get it back.
