Connor McDavid drafted 77th Overall in the KHL

Connor McDavid was drafted on Thursday.

Though the Erie Otters star isn't eligible for the NHL Draft until 2015, when the 17-year-old Toronto native is projected to be the top pick, McDavid was drafted 77th overall in the annual KHL draft by Croatian team Medvescak Zagreb.

Conceivably, McDavid could forgo his final season in the OHL next year and sign with Medvescak, but that would seriously compromise McDavid's NHL draft stock rendering such a move beyond unlikely.

McDavid finished fourth in the OHL in points with 21 goals and 78 assists.

I’m not sire of the drafting stipulations on age and nationality for this draft but it is very Russian heavy on the picks. This would mean if there was any reason for him to join the KHL (Lockout, doesn’t pan out...) Zagreb hold his rights.

And here’s a look at the number one pick in the KHL draft

Kirill Kaprizov is No. 1 pick in 2014 Junior Draft

08.05.2014
At today’s 2014 KHL Entry Draft in Saint Petersburg, it was Metallurg Novokuznetsk who won first pick in the pre-Draft lottery, which they used to secure the rights to keep one of their own promising graduates at the club. Seventeen-year-old left-handed forward Kirill Kaprizov (176cm - 5’ 9” and 80kg - 176lbs), who was No. 20 on the Central Scouting Bureau’s rankings for Russian players, spent last season in the MHL-A league with Metallurg’s Kuznetskie Medvedi, and recorded 37 points (19+18) in 60 games.

Although after searching for a while there isn’t a defined link of all the picks in the draft on the KHL website, but I found one at Elite Prospects:

There is a lot of picks with “missing data” ::D

A) Eligible for millions earlier. Even if he only plays next year in the KHL then opts for the NHL draft.

B) Better development for a guy of McDavid's calibre against men. (I disagree with the OP's opinion it will mess his development)

c) No ELC limits. They can offer the moon in terms of money next year and the first 3 to 5 years of his career.

Hey, someday soon a Canadian is going to say I'd rather get paid more to play in the KHL. Its only a matter of time.

Just the fact that he got drafted 77th ovr is surprising

well obviously he'd go much higher if he was actually going to play in the KHL. he went late cause it's a gamble.

Like pavel bure went in the 6th round, who could of been 1st overall, but only went 6th round because of the gamble of pavel not playing in the NHL.

I wouldn't be surprised if he signed a 1 year deal. Too good for the OHL.

Imagine posters on their forum

'This is why you can't build a team around North Americans. Typical Canadian bolting to the NHL.'

Not to nitpick - but Bure went in the 6th round because every other team thought that he was ineligible to be drafted.
