Latest update on Pitkanen (as of 5 August 2014):

In a brief interview with Finnish news outlet Kaleva, Pitkanen said he’s a “long way” from returning to play, noting that the injury hasn’t shown much improvement and he also hasn’t resumed skating.

Doesn't sound good. Looks like he's not going to be anywhere close to ready for training camp (or possibly even the entire 2014-15 season). His heel hasn't even healed well enough for him to start skating. And he's been off the ice since April 2013 so he's going to need a lot of time, if/when he recovers. Seems like there's a pretty good chance he doesn't play this year and it's very possible he ends up having to retire.

I'm not saying Chicago should trade him for that, but if they were looking to trade him to open up cap space, they wouldn't get a whole lot of value for him. He hasn't exactly been lighting it up recently.

The problem with that sort of thinking is the Hawks have a number of options to open up cap space. So if all the GMs are trying to strong arm Chicago into trading a good player for less than market value then the Hawks can just deal someone else. But that will never happen if the Hawks make Leddy available, he is good enough that someone will want to pay the price than risk lowballing and watching Leddy go to another team.

He still extremely young, people forget he was playing at the age of 19 in the NHL.

He has a ton of upside, and many teams would jump at that.

He's a guy that needs to be sheltered in order to be effective. This may change in the future but its looking like it may not happen, considering he seems to have regressed.
