The darker side of solar power

Heretic

Yes you did, and I found a lot of other like minded individuals that are looking at other solutions to our energy problems. I don't think there's going to be one answer, but a bunch of different technologies providing us with our long term energy needs.

How about this...

Turning into this....

Baby steps....

Also this popped up for me today...

I'd rather not use a precious resource like water to make oil, or using water to reclaim oil from plastic. Like you said baby steps.

You guys got a problem or what?

Don't shoot the messenger.

Scientists will eventually stop flailing around with solar power and focus their efforts on harnessing the only truly unlimited source of energy on the planet: stupidity. I predict that in the future, scientists will learn how to convert stupidity into clean fuel.

I think this post deserves uber votes for nipping the problem the bud by exposing the author.

Saved me a lot of trouble anyways.

Come on Heretic you seem like a good guy but this spreading misinformation thing really rubs people the wrong way.

Meh. Ease up on Heretic, guys. Sure the article is one-sided, but he didn't write it and most articles relating to environmental issues are one-sided.

I think there are going to be issues with any kind of energy production, but just as we work on bringing them to fruition, we have to work just as hard on ways to deal with the problems they produce.

Burning fossil fuels leads to climate change and solar energy adds toxic material to the landfill. Right now I'd probably go with option B. Maybe we can work on making the cost of leaving the planet reasonable enough that we are eventually able to jettison these materials into the heart of the sun, or into interstellar space without going bankrupt. It sounds like science fiction, but a lot of what we take for granted today was science fiction years ago and I believe this is an idea worth pursuing.

In any event, as someone who lives in a sunshine challenged area of the world, I'm a proponent of Wind and Tidal energy sources. Let's see some additional funding for those.

Does anybody bother to discuss the relevance of the articles anymore? Or is it more enjoyable to attack the posters over why they posted them.

The problem is where he is coming from.

Im not sure how exactly Christians hopped on board the climate change denial bandwagon. Perhaps because they assume that science is their enemy on so many other issues (which science apparently is without intending to be) and this is a significant current one that coincides and therefore must be opposed for the sake of consistency.

Or perhaps they think only the almighty has the power to change the world and the idea humans are capable of this is blasphemous, but whatever. This seems to be their position nonetheless.

An immense amount of harm has already been caused by their efforts to hinder progress; when they are successful, the best interests of human beings are sacrificed in order to reconcile Christian beliefs.

This will not do.

Seriously, WTF are you talking about?

What a pathetic and over generalized statement to make.

Yes, I'm a Christian, where did I ever say I denied climate change?

This thread has nothing to do with religion - Get out if you only plan on attacking Christians.

I'm still waiting for my cartoon picture of Satan sucking souls from solar panels ;)

oil and coal pollute, dams drown forests, Nuclear has toxic waste, windmills kill birds. Solar seems pretty low level damage wise by comparison.

CO2 conversion and real fusion power will make em all obsolete hopefully.

Seems the current solar panels can kill birds as well:

"Certain avian species seem to crash into large solar power arrays or get burned by the concentrated rays"

More here (from a biased source I guess):

What a bunch of hot air and arm waving by the author of the article. I can't believe the Globe's standards now include spreading cow manure on their pages...

...I can't help but wonder if they've got stocks in oil sands companies.

What does oil in the tar sands have to do with providing electricity to the average household?

True, but this thread was supposed to be just about Solar Energy and what impact it has on the environment - not all energy sources - though that is a good idea, maybe we should have an "Energy" thread?

The original argument is subject to rebuttals, as with all arguments presented in all environments. And the official rebuttal is: it is still cleaner than what we are using now.

Fusion , that's the big game changer.

Not just for supplying power for an energy hungry planet but also powering future spacecraft.

And weapons to fight off hostile alien creatures...

Cleaner than Hydro?
