Edler/Tanev, Home vs Away, and Measuring the 2018/2019 Season

I wanted to write this post (1) because I have been pleasantly surprised by the team this year (work ethic and development of key prospects) and (2) because it has felt like there have been a couple of seasons within the 2018/2019 season.

I decided to break the season into five groups with a main focus on two factors (1) disparity between home vs. away games and (2) games where either one of Tanev/Edler or both missed games.

There is clearly heavy lifting yet to do with this team (in terms of turning it into a Cup contender) but I do see positive signs despite the doom and gloom view held by some.

*Note: I ignored loser points and just focused on wins and loses - I did this because I wanted to analyze the team based on how close they are to being a legit playoff contender and the potential they have with respect to becoming a Cup contender. Long story short, good teams win games.

Will be interesting to see how well they do over the last 17 games...especially if Tanev returns to the line-up soon (and Hughes joins the club).

Key Takeaways

- The schedule has been tough (30 home games and 35 away games to date) but the young players have fared well considering. Disjointed schedule likely played a role in the rash of injuries at specific times.

- When playing games at a rate of two or less days per game, they struggle.

- When Edler/Tanev or both are not in the line up the team struggles.

- When they have a stable D core in place, they have been competitive.

None of the above is ground breaking but it would be interesting to see how drastically the analytics play out with respect to the above groups. It could provide a more accurate picture of what the team could be if they add a few players and work with the league to plan a more stable schedule.

Key Adjustments and Team Goals For Next Year

- The team played hard this year and need to maintain that level of work ethic

- The team needs to tighten up Team Defense (including puck movement/support on breakout)

- The team needs to push each dman down a spot (except for Edler). See below line-up.

- The team needs to improve the PP. Hughes should help but they need more movement e.g. have Hughes and Pettersson switch during play to open up lanes and generate open shots.

Team Next Year:

- Add a legit top six scorer on LW (could potentially come from internal development)

- Add a legit top pairing dman on the right side...this is likely a pipe dream but they should explore trade and UFA market.

- Continue to allow prospects to push for spots and earn them if they outplay vets.

The biggest problem of the defensive core is the overreliance on Edler and Tanev. Both are two of the most injury prone defensemen in the league. Once they get hurt, the entire D crumbles, which happens year in and year out. Adding Hughes, the continued emergence of Hutton/Stecher, and bolstering the defense through trade or free agency will be key for the Canucks. If one of those three options don't pan out, I don't see the team making the playoffs next year. Tanev needs to be the #5 or #6 guy on the team now.

Or are they the most injured because of our over reliance on them?

I don't think so. Edler has only had one full season played in his entire career, and Tanev has only played more than 70 games once. This is even when the defensive core was more balanced. They are expected to get hurt whether they play 5 minutes, or 25.

well i have a much more simplistic take on the last 3 seasons and the nucks

the season really counts after christmas

from around mid January till the last 5 or so games of the season

that is when all the better teams become focused, play harder and more disciplined

the canucks always falter during that stretch

the nucks simply are unable to elevate their game during this time frame

injuries are a factor, but other teams have injuries and still compete

to me it is all about mature talent

the nucks lack that . but their talent is maturing

it will take time still

the other general take is the drafting record of this team lacked overall strategic planning

d take longer to mature

so i fail to understand why we focused on drafting offensive players first

and only are getting around to drafting d more recently

by the time our young d are fully developed and in their prime

we will be needing to rebuild our offense

so unless part of the plan was to invest in ufa dmen . and pay that higher salary cost

or to trade top flight offensive players that fans have invested in (a good d will cost us a top young center)

the approach is somewhat flawed

who the heck is going to get the puck from our back end to our young talent up front?

we lack those d in our system.. and hughes, if he does pan out, which will take some time, can only play so many minutes
