[Proposal] Loui Eriksson off-season

Recommended Posts

Blackhawks acquire: Loui Eriksson

                                   Guillaume Brisebois

                        (VAN)1st round pick 2022

Canucks acquire: Brandon Saad

THEN

Penguins acquire: Brandon Saad

Canucks acquire: Filip Hallander

Canucks then turn around and trade Saad to his hometown of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh will have the cap space for Saads $6 million cap hit because out of all their UFAs and RFAs. Justin Schultz and his $5.5 million cap hit will likely be gone because of the emergence of John Marino. We can also take Marleaus $700,000 off for sure as he doesn't fit into Pittsburghs bigger picture and is just a rental who will likely retire after this season. Pending RFA Matt Murrays rights will also likely be shipped out with the emergence of Jarry and DeSmith. That's another $3.75 million of space. They do this because they're always looking for wingers for Crosby and Malkin. They add a two time cup-winning winger with size and speed who fits nicely alongside Crosby with a similar high- tempo 200 foot game. Saad is from Pittsburgh and has skated with multiple Penguins during off-seasons at the Penguins UPMC Lemieux practice facility. The Hawks do this because they've been shopping Saad for awhile and although they dump $6 million and then add it back in Eriksson. They get a 1st round pick and a B level prospect blueliner in Brisebois who fits their mold and which they need with Keith and Seabrook nearly done. Brisebois fits in to their future with Boqvist, L.Carlsson, etc. The Canucks do this to rid themselves of Erikssons $6 million without having to buy him out and continue to pay him. Yes we give up another 1st round pick but we are entering contending and buying as a team now. Benning is also going to try and re-coup our 2020 1st, 2nd, 3rd and we still have a 1st in 2021. We have a serious team and a plethora of young talent and don't need to worry about a couple of first round picks. You have to pay up to dump a contract like Erikssons. We also grab a 19 year old Swedish center in Filip Hallander who was the Penguins second round pick in 2018. He has a good frame at 6'1 190 and likes to use it while also boasting two-way upside. Potentially Pettersson, Horvat, Gaudette, Hallander down the middle would be very solid.

I get trying to move Eriksson out, but I don't like it. We're not contenders and this is too early to make a habit of moving first rounders. We've got some great young talent and the team is progressing but if it's to be sustainable we're going to need guys on ELC's to step in for cap reasons. Those guys are mostly acquired by drafting in the first few rounds.

If cap space is the concern I'd ignore the Eriksson contract for now and find a way to move Sutter and Rouss. Roussel's cap hit isn't nearly as large and Sutter will be playing out the final year on his contract next season so anyone taking him won't be stuck with that contract for long.

Sutter and Rouss can still be useful players, even if we retain a million of each contract we're getting 5/7.3.3m of cap space freed up.

Rouss at 2m and Sutter at 3.3m is way more appealing and easier to fit in, there's a good chance we wouldn't have to give up as much.

Nope.  I just enjoy debauchery.

Seriously, why do you think we need to add a first and a prospect to our cap dump for the Hawk’s cap dump?

Because Saad is kind of like a younger version of Eriksson and actually has some value. He will be 28 in October and Eriksson will be 35 in July. Saad put 47 points up only a year ago and even this season on a down year on a poor team he has 19 goals and is on pace for 40 points. Where as Eriksson has 12 points even with a top six role and nearly half those points are empty net plays. Eriksson is a 15 to 20 points $6 million dollar 34 year old penalty killer who only gets worse. Saad is a 40 to 50 points $6 million dollar 27 year old penalty killer who needs a change of scenery.

This is a good explanation, but it’s still not stopping my night’s debauch. :towel:

maybe their goalies won’t make it and we’ll have to play against their zamboni driver.

Hey Joe.  In that funny scene Luongo and Schneider did those years back, which one was driving the Zamboni and ran over the other?  That’s the Zamboni driver I want in nets.

One thing that is overlooked is the Canes have a pretty deep blueline.  Combine that with the Leafs tendancy to choke when it matters leads to a predictable end result.

I disagree you will not see Jim give up another first rounder to remove Erickson from roster..

There are other ways but this kind of trade will not happen....Never

Short of Loui retirement on his own accord, there is no other way of removing Loui's contract from the Canucks.  At least not until the offseason of 2021.

Brutal idea in my opinion.

The Canucks shouldn’t be giving up any more first rounders.   Hawks ain’t giving the Canucks Saad for a cap dump.

Either Eriksson retires, or he’ll be packaged with Demko to Ottawa or Detroit for a mid level prospect.

I wonder if there will be a compulsory buy out before the next expansion draft?
