qwijibo
Re-signing him satisfies the condition in the trade. So a Montreal gets St. Louis’s 2021 4th round pick in addition to their 2020 2nd.

Habs got him for a 4th! Flipped him in a few weeks for a 2nd and a 4th lol

Especially with the cap staying put at $81.5M, only so much money to go around that Stanley Cup team. The siver lining to losing Pietrangelo, is that they will be inserting Hobey Baker winner Scott Perunovich into the lineup next season. By all accounts, the "next" Torey Krug. Yes, if they know for sure Pietro is walking, then it makes sense to re-sign Scandella. If there's a chance of keeping Pietro though, I think they'd have been better off clearing cap (perhaps Bozak and a couple others) and using that combined 8.275 towards him. Obviously can't get into Pietro's head, or his agent's, but it's pretty clear that he can and will get A LOT more in free agency from a few teams with the cap space who desperately need an elite d-man. St Louis has the benefit of: a. Having a number of high talent, younger defensemen; and b. Having won a Cup. So their urgency to re-up him isn't as high. Their window is open, they already went through it once already, and will still have chances to win going forward. There are several teams with the cap space, or who will make the cap space, in order to boost their defense. First thought is Edmonton, but they need to clear cap space. But I can absolutely see them make the moves necessary to free up the space to get him. The New Jersey Devils are going to have a sh*t ton of cap space next year. Enought to go after Pietrangelo and Lehner. And if each team is allowed one compliance buyout, then they'll have loads more (still) after using it on Schneider.
