  1. No cap dumps, no retention, we aren't some crappy team dumping for a rebuild...
  2. I stand corrected.... must be thinking of someone else, my apologies. Sounds good.
  3. Not sure why we would be interested... Even with a league minimum contract, we need guys in the bottom six that can play D and be physical, not sure he fits the bill
  4. Here is a good quote from a captain of an NHL team going to the finals this week, a guy with less hits than Horvat and no fighting majors, respected by his peers and undoubtedly appreciated by his teams fans... “But to answer your question, I think being able to relate to different people in that locker room, there are 24 different personalities and trying to relate to people in different topics and things like that, being a good teammate, leading by example. I mean, go down the list of all the things you’ve heard in the past, but be yourself. If you’re going to start faking things and trying to pretend to be something you’re not, people will see right through that.” Be yourself... don't fake it... don't pretend to be something your not...
  5. Not sure who I insulted... did not comment on anyones experience playing sports... Maybe saying repsonses were in perfect keyboard warrior style? Pretty common practice for many sports fans, and the internet in general, passing off opinions as fact that are often disrespectful of a player or person. Usually something they would not have the balls to say to someone's face. Maybe my comment referring to posts about people saying Horvat does not hit as ignorance? It's an actual word... not an insult. Look it up if you like. Is what it is. Sorry if you feel insulted by me sharing my opinions on trading or demoting Horvat. Was not my intention anyways.
  6. Have to say this thread is a bit embarrassing as a Canucks fan... Dissing Horvat because he does not do certain things, ignoring the facts, and comparing him to players who never accomplished anything more that Hovat has accomplished... Lauding a playing style that only wins cups in their fantasy land, in perfect keyboard warrior style. I think everyone wants the Canucks to be tougher to play against, myself included, but trading away a player like Horvat is beyond laughable, every team covets players like him. I am not really going to get into any arguments over this, it is readily apparent there is no real discussion here so I simply agree to disagree. For those saying Horvat does not hit... Last season he had 96 recorded hits, ranking him 51st amongst centers, take away the bottom six players, he is highly ranked amongst top 6 centers, that is just the facts of the matter, any comments otherwise are simply ignorance. refer to the straw man comment Does he fight? No, nor would I want any of our key players to fight very often and risk injury, don't really care if your are the captain or not, we can ice role players for that. For the most part we watch the game from the outside with no idea what happens on the ice or the dressing room, it's very easy to sit in our living rooms a decide what players feel, see or does in relation to activities on the ice, and then write them off on a whim... pretty common practice for many sports fans, not just Canucks fans. All arguments aside, I am all for the Canucks to be tougher, bigger and grittier. All supporting our skill guys, because we need them too. Canucks do need to make changes to our roster, but Horvat is not one of them in my humble opinion. How many of our forwards are soft? How many of our forwards fight? But Horvat is trade bait simply because he is the Captain? *facepalm* It's a rare combination to have toughness, brass balls, skill, face offs, skating and leadership all in one package... And I'd bet dollars to donuts that if Horvat was some mean spirited intimidating captain but could not score, or could not win face offs or could not... whatever... there would still be that group of guys saying we should trade him because our captain should be able to do that too... My two cents on it anyways. I think we are blessed to have a guy like Horvat... Let's build around him
  7. Well we already have a lot of players who can't score so if he is faster and bigger and maybe win face offs? Speed is essential
  8. Avs are looking at MacKinnon UFA next year for budgeting purposes... that eats a huge amount of that cap hit, they only have 6 forwards signed for next year, no goalie signed... Have to sign Manson, Kadri, a #1 Goalie, Burakovsky, Nichushkin, Lehkonen all while assuming MacKinnon will be 10Mill + They do not have as much cap space as you think...
  9. Uhhh just sharing my opinions on analytics, there was a conversation going on about the pros and cons of relying too much on it, was not calling anyone out so not sure what you mean...
  10. Definitely need some more grit in our lineup. Not sure I would disrespect a player for not being a heavy hitter or fighting or scrumming after whistles. A lot of players do not have that game style, and this is nothing new, many players over the years have had tough guys in the lineup to protect certain guys ability to play that style of play. Would it be great if all our player were mean ass gritty players who could also put up huge offensive numbers? Sure! It's just not reality. But I agree we could use a few more gritty guys and few less soft players.
  11. If analytics were everything they would not scout players in person to watch actual games played.... Always need the eye test to confirm the data, especially when you take into account that it is a team sport with 5 other players on the ice affecting your "data" both positively and negatively.
  12. True enough not every contract works out, you still have to build right, up the middle, in net and defense and ensure the chemistry works. Choose the right people... Both are interesting examples... San Jose has some big ticket players, but can they play defense? Seems not. How stable is their goal tending? Are they a cohesive team? The Islanders are kinda my point to some degree... Anders Lee nets 40 and gets paid, they do not want to show (a 28year old)Tavares the money and he walks, Now Anders Lee cannot break 30 goals. The islanders obviously thought they could replace Tavares with Barzal? (Potential) and it hasn't quite worked out (yet). Some might disrespect Tavares but he hasn't really missed a beat production wise while playing second line minutes. Leadership and Chemistry...? All I am really saying is when players hit their prime, it's usually around 27-28 and if you are not willing to pay up the big ticket 7-8 year contract you will never have star players. If the market for star players is a job security 7-8 year 50-60 mill contract that's the cost of doing business, you earn your money as a GM making the RIGHT calls on these types of contracts, you can't just trade away your good players once they turn 28, you have to step up and make the right call... or else your Ottawa as I said. The owners are their own worst enemy, someone will always show the player the money, so they give all the leverage to the players and their agents... you have to pay to play. Just my take on all the comments about declining skills and anchor contracts...
  13. I have to say that this concept that we should not pay players in their prime, contracts into the 35 year old range because their skills erode and the contact is not worth it. This concept is naive, this is the cost of getting players in their prime, they all want the golden handshake. And there is always someone willing to pay. If you do not show the money you are forever icing teams of potential stars and average players on palatable contracts but no chance of making it deep into the playoffs. The goal is to sign Miller and have him be productive for as much of the contract as possible, if it doesn't work out these contracts are still generally movable or bought out. Gotta pay to play or else you're Ottawa... imho C73
  14. OEL's contract is not as bad as some make it out to be. With the Arizona retaining 1.2 mill per season OEL comes in at just under 7.3mill OEL is pretty much a career .5 PPG defensman who made his money scoring goals to the tune of 10-20+ goals per year. After a horrendous start for the whole team OEL managed .37 PPG closing in on his career production while coming up short on the goal front to some degree Don't think he played horrible making his contract a huge anchor like a PK Subban scenario... When you consider the trade allowed us to be rid of Ericksson... That MUST be worth the difference on the mill or two you might save on a different defense man.. just sayin...lol
  15. All I know is I sell a crap ton and do not get returns... soooo yeah
  16. If Lam, Lockwood and Highmore are a line... That leaves Dickenson, Hoglander and Dowling as the only other signed forwards... Dickenson has to be on the block looking for a fresh start, he should be movable... Dowling is injury relief in my books, def not a third line player... Can Hoglander play defense? Is he big enough? Might have to re-invent himself. Otherwise we need a complete new third line.
  17. Bruce I'm ok with... hard to argue with the results. Needs to figure out the flat first periods imho. Boeser is on the block unless he has figure a way to skate faster... unless he is shooting the puck he is such a non factor I don't we are too far off, roster needs some beef tho. Need a top 4 dman yes... Schenn gets a lot of love but he is too slow in the end, he is a depth piece on a contender. Hard to believe we played so well with several 7th pairing defencemen... otherwise our depth D are plus players so there's that. I don't think we are at a place where we can afford to lose a 1st round pick to "put us over the top" Definitely need to make some moves to be able to afford a top RHD, ultimately might need to wait until we clear the 2.4 mill dead cap for Holtby and Virtanen... If we can make some moves we need to take advantage of the capped out contenders with UFA/RFA signees... Assuming the re-sign Boeser, Lammiko and Highmore.... With Lockwood and Dowling we only have 12 forwards signed for next year, a bit thin to be honest, Dowling is injury relief at best...
  18. Green yes... Still Benning's team on the ice for the most part, but I guess he did sign Green sooo maybe? lol
  19. I agree. No rebuild, we build around Miller and Horvat and let our young guys round into form. D is not as bad as some people think money wise or skill wise. Some people have short memories when they look at Myers and OEL, Compared to what we had before... yikes I agree we need a solid top 4 defensman to replace Schenn, who, while doing good things, I think is really a depth piece on a "contending" team. Simply to slow. - Probably the biggest mistake Benning made was letting Edler and Tanev walk, they were our defensive backbone and both are having great years skating into the playoffs. Boeser has to be the piece to move, either to trade for what we need to let walk to pay for a UFA we need... Again, just too slow and one dimensional imho. As I said in my other post, replace Boeser for someone who can skate and trade away our low value players to afford a top 4 Defenseman (Dickenson, Pearson, Poolman) and look to get bigger, faster and grittier on the bottom six. Easier said than done...
  20. I think everyone who is looking to trade away everyone and build around our "core" are a bit out to lunch, as we are already well on our way to building around our core. I tend to agree with managements comments about the canucks not being as far off as it seems, and I'm hopeful they are looking to build not tear down. You have to look at the big picture here, we have a guy in his prime hitting the 100 point mark, a coveted faceoff star who CAN also produce, a budding star with a lethal shot who plays a 200ft game, a gifted skating elite playmaking defensman, a developing starting goalie with star potential, we saw the start of a dominant relentless third line. Podz is almost breaking into the top 6 in points in his rookie year. And the team stats... taking into account the horrible season killing start to the season, we were 18th in goals for, 9th in goals against, 9th in PP%, 7th in FOW%... Considering our horrible 1st periods we still manage to be 13th in SPG. Ok ok... so we won;t talk about the PK% at 73% that was a disaster, got a bit better under "Bruce there it is" once they started ditching the passive box debacle. Do we have some personnel issues? Sure, Are we slow? yes. Soft? yes. Do we still have some bad habits? Totally... Are will full of aging vets and in need of a rebuild? Not even close... I actually feel we need to go all in and get aggressive, cap space is not our friend but trading some of our more pricey depth players we could make some moves My target would be Filip Forsberg, let Boeser walk or trade his rights and sign Forsberg while we have another year of Miller at 5 mill... Could we then move The Pearson's Dickensons, LTIR Poolman and go after a team like Calgary having to pay Gaudreau? Go after Zadorov? Calgary is just an example as there are several teams with cap issues and players to sign who might be in tough to sign all their players... My depth charts are not really indicative of lines etc just skill/ability imho... Skating ability is our weakness and is my highest priority and why I made holes in our lineup I think we need a top line or top 6 winger/center, a top 4 defenseman to play with Hughes and revamp our bottom 6 with a bit more size and grit Top Line Forsberg? Miller Petterson Hughes Zadorov? Second Line Podkolzin Horvat Garland Larsson Myers Third/Fourth Line Highmore Lammiko Lockwood <- This could be a solid 3rd or 4th line, liked Lockwood's grit down the stretch for a little guy Dermott ??? Third/Fourth line ??? ??? ??? Goalies Demko Martin Bubble players Boeser??? Boeser is a shooter but doesn't have the speed, could net us a top 4 defensman... do we give up on him? Pearson??? Solid if not unspectacular, decent defensively and put up some points down the stretch, does he have the speed to stay? Hoglander??? Regressed, ineffective at times Chaisson??? Every team needs cheap wingers but would rather have a banger (Possible 4th liner or depth forward) Schenn??? As good as Schenn has been defensively he lacks speed and passing skills, might stay as depth Burroughs??? Like the hitting but hasn't shown much else on either side of the puck... Keeper??? On a one way contract... RHD with toughness and some skill? Trade Bait Dickenson??? Dickenson needs a change of scenery, too pricey to play on the 4th line... Can we get a pick/prospect? Poolman??? Definitely an flyer of a signing, Poolman was not terrible but nothing of note either... Done Hunt Richardson Halak
