  1. The Night of the Hunter, a 1955 movie starring Robert Mitchum as a religious psychopath who learns from an inmate on death row that the inmate has hidden $10,000 on his family farm somewhere. So Mitchum goes to the farm to woo the inmate's widow and learn the whereabouts of the money. This movie is regarded by some as a classic. From Wikipedia: "Despite receiving negative reviews upon its original release, it has been positively re-evaluated in later decades and is now considered one of the greatest films ever made. It was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1992. The influential French film magazine Cahiers du Cinéma selected The Night of the Hunter in 2008 as the second-best film of all time, behind Citizen Kane." I have to disagree. I thought the movie was kind of goofy. Robert Mitchum was very good in his role but the plot was weak and varied from serious to farcical. 4/10 It turns up every so often on TCM.
  2. A good signing. Arsenal started to stagger as soon as he got injured last season. Arsenal tie William Saliba to new big-money contract as familiar pattern followed William Saliba's new Arsenal deal will not include a release clause, it has been claimed, with the Gunners finally ready to confirm an extension for the centre-back. Saliba's existing deal at the Emirates Stadium was due to expire in 2024. His performances last season helped the London side challenge for the title, but nerves had started to jangle among some supporters amid interest from the continent. Now, though, The Athletic reports that Saliba has extended his deal until 2027. As with new deals for the Frenchman's club colleagues, Arsenal aren't leaving themselves at risk of a rival being able to pay a release clause, though there is also no option to extend the contract for an extra year. https://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/william-saliba-arsenal-new-contract-30410217?utm_source=mirror_newsletter&utm_campaign=arsenal_fc_newsletter2&utm_medium=email&pure360.trackingid=d083d551-a419-44bb-9a23-04c26d4d9b9c

  5. WTH??? Wembanyama didn't get a triple double! And he didn't leap over the backboard! And he didn't walk on water! The guy's a bust!
  6. The Whitecaps/Seattle game is on TSN on Saturday, 7:30pm.
  7. Wonder if Britney is going to be there?
  8. And it's official. Too bad, really. I thought Xhaka was one of Arsenal's best players last season. Granit Xhaka leaves Arsenal to join Bayer Leverkusen Bayer Leverkusen have signed Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka from Arsenal on a five-year deal, the Bundesliga club said on Thursday. Financial details were not disclosed but British media reported the German club paid €25 million euros ($27.2m) for the 30-year old. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/37970243/granit-xhaka-leaves-arsenal-join-bayer-leverkusen
  9. Came across this in another forum. Turns out, if we somehow beat the US we'd play the winner of Panama/Qatar in the semis.
  10. From what I've read, while Jamaica would have been an easier opponent they still would have been favoured to beat Canada (in its present configuration). Until it happens we can hope! Sunday, 4:30pm
  11. Announced crowd of 82,110. As you mentioned, an MLS record. Caught the last half hour of the game. Very entertaining to watch. Helped by the fact that the stadium was packed with noisy fans which always makes a game better.
  12. Not surprising that he wants a lake given his love of diving.
  13. Yep. If we field our best side we can compete with the US and Mexico. We just haven't got the depth that the US and Mexico do. Which makes sense given that they each have much larger populations than we do.
  14. And now Borjan is hurt. Canada goalkeeper and captain Borjan out for remainder of Gold Cup https://www.coastreporter.net/soccer/canada-goalkeeper-and-captain-borjan-out-for-remainder-of-gold-cup-7229126

  16. The next week or two??? You've got enough there to last you until the end of the year! (Regardless, enjoy.)
  17. I was scanning another soccer forum and people there were pointing out that maybe it was just as well this game wasn't on network tv.
  18. Final score was US 6 T&T 0. So the US wins its group and has 13 goals for and 1 goal against. Should Canada beat Cuba on Tuesday, we'll probably end up in second place in our division. Which means we'll play the US in the quarter-finals.
  19. Okay. So why will they be able to raise the price of their product in order to recoup the tax increase?
  20. I'm asking, if a company can increase the price of its product for whatever reason, why hasn't it already done so? Companies are in the business of making as much profit as possible.
  21. I've seen that argument applied to other companies. I'm puzzled by it. If the oil companies (or any other company) can recoup a tax increase by simply raising the price of their product, why haven't they already raised the price to increase their profits?
  22. I checked out the link you included and saw this: Am I reading this correctly? Does Houston have 34.91% of their cap tied up in this one player? If so, isn't that insane? Or is this common for NBA teams? Also, if they simply wanted to met the cap floor, why wouldn't they pay the player, say 30 million and sign another player for 10? Shelling out all that money on one player simply to quickly meet the floor sounds like very dubious cap management to me.
  23. Europe's space telescope to target universe's dark mysteries Europe's Euclid space telescope is scheduled to blast off Saturday on the first-ever mission aiming to shed light on two of the universe's greatest mysteries: dark energy and dark matter. https://phys.org/news/2023-06-europe-space-telescope-universe-dark.html
  24. I hadn't watched the NBA in years until I started watching again during this past season's playoffs so I'm pretty much unfamiliar with all the current NBA stars. But if this Vanvleet person is getting paid over $40 million a year I'm guessing he's a pretty good player?
