Take away from the first pre-season game:

how do you put a ceiling on this?

The 21-year-old Russian led the Canucks in their 3-2 overtime loss to the Calgary Flames at Rogers Arena with one goal, five hits, four shots on net and 20:40 of ice time — greater than anything he logged during 79 games in his up-and-down rookie season.

    This. Makes. Things. Interesting.

I really hope Hogs forces his way on this team. I really wonder who he could displace in the top 9 though.

Bottom 6 perhaps.... Dickenson?  Though different positions.  Höglander can bring more skill to the 4th line.

The WCE option is a good fit.

Exciting offense but a few glaring holes likely means no real noise in the playoffs if we even make it.

Wce had arguably a slightly better D.  But there's no question that Demko is far better than Cloutier.  We have a deeper forward roster as well.  This current team is better built for a successful playoff run imho.

This teams built more like the 94' team if we're comparing eras.

Gaudette gains 24 lbs and debuts with Tavares and Marner. Will be interesting to see how his season pans out.

Slower for sure... And probably less agile.  That's to much weight to put on in one summer.  The only potential exception is, Gauds was supposedly having troubles with his digestion or ability to absorb nutrients from the foods he ate.  So I could see once that was sorted out, he may gain some real healthy weight.  Curious to see how it turns out for him but I'm skeptical.

From this clip, it appears that his skating is average, no break away speed.  However he has the size, intensity, and is showing the ability to make a high end passes.  So he sees the ice well and also shows that he's learning the ability to find the soft areas.  His development is coming along very well so far!

The big club could use the V logo with JCs head. It's not terrible, but I imagine many have strong opinions against it.

Whenever I see this rendition, it reminds me of this old Victoria business...

Lots of differences here... But check out OEL... Major difference in deployment, maybe the reason his second half was that much more impactful?  Quite the X factor shift in strategy.

I logged the coast for 10 years,.   It’s a joke of a portrayal.

The Giants nailed it years ago..

I agree with the Giants but what is the second pic of?

Edit... Just looked at previous post.

He's remembered far too much for his short, albeit terrible, stint at the end of his tenure. He and Hoglander did work well together.

Well to be fair... Green had less to work with on those rosters.  So Högs was probably the best option?... However in hindsight... Maybe it would have been better had he played a half season or so in Utica to improve his defense understanding?

Dude's still just 21 and was injured for much of last year. He clearly lost a step last year because of the injury. I think he's going to have a good year. People sleep on my boy Nils.

I respect your opinion more than your playoff play there Dan...

But seriously... To many are ready to trade Högs at the age of 21... He's in the age bracket management wants.  He can probably be effective on all 4 lines... So he's versatile enough as well.

Does he need to get better defensively?  Well yes... So does 95% of all 21 year old NHL players.  Is his hockey IQ elite... No probably not but it's good and his work ethic, will and want to play the right way, will help him stay an effective top 9 NHL player for years me thinks.  He's skilled and has a high compete level.

Right now, even if they wanted to trade him, the return wouldn't be worth it.  So... Why not just let him get his game back, see where he fits.  Once he does, he will either become one of the fringe core by year end or traded for an actual reasonable return.  Win, win....B) Capiche?

I know I said this before about a many prospects. Both Canucks and not. But I try not to write someone's potential off too soon. He turned 23 a few days ago. Not old by any means. He can still become a special player. It'd help if they actually put a leadership type player on the blueline with him. The oldest quality blue liner they have is Chabot. So these kids gotta learn the sport almost by themselves. Love or hate Benning but I do appreciate the vets he brought in. The Beagles, even Gudbranson, and others. We don't want our kids just out there in the deep end without a guide. Cause it makes that learning curve more difficult.

I agree with surrounding rookies with vets... But not at the term and aav those vets Benning signed tis all.

I get the vibe that Miller has been a big-time mentor for Podkolzin. Love to see it.

Yup... JT said as much on 'dropping the gloves' pod cast.  JT's a major influence to Podz, and a perfect mentor.  A special bond that will show greatness on and off the ice.

I’m honestly pretty confident that this is what we’ll see Bruce try going into camp.

    Mikheyev - Petey - Podz

    Kuz - Miller - Boeser

    Pearson - Bo - Garland

    Hog - Lazar - Joshua

    Hughes - OEL

    Dermott - Myers

    Rathbone - Schenn

That's the best lineup yet!!  Perfect in my eyes.  I like Hogs on the 4th as a feisty skilled scoring winger, Mikheyev as the speed, with the defensive acumen beside petey and trying OEL on the right with Hughes.  Schenn as the perfect partner for Rathbone on 3rd pairing.  Looks realistic and solid!

Well first of lammikko is no longer on the team so that’s not good.

Yah that's right he's not, either is Highmore... Post was from July 3rd (prior to Lazar, Joshua signing)... Things have changed since.  More recent posts reflect that fact.  Regardless, just a proposal where no part will most likely be realized.  We'll see.
